Title: Titanfall General Chat
Post by: kookynic on January 20, 2014, 01:52:30 pm
Hey everyone, just seeing if there is much interest out there for this?

GhostofGallipoli was fortunate enough to get some game time on this at an Expo in AUS.

The word is that this is the game to watch. Could be a highly competitive i.e scrims and tournaments.

Can't fucking wait.

6v6 isn't too bad, apparently it can be boosted up with bots, which is OK. Sounds like it could be too busy for more than 6 a side anyway

so every server is just 6v6?

Gameplay vids look sweet!

I think there are Bots to increase the numbers either side/? I could be wrong

But not worth as much per kill as killing a player or Titan.

Interested to see how this comes out as BF4 is a total flop in terms of its competitive play.

Probably a good that I didn't waste my money on BF4 then.

Titanfall has been made by those guys from Infinity Ward.
Same guys who made Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Story I heard was Call of duty guys that didn't like the direction of COD so split off and made a game with integrity.

The thing that killed COD = Match making

It needs dedicated servers.

Current Gen Console versions of Ghosts is capped at 6 per team and it's fine.

6v6 could work, would be the right way to go if you wanted to take competitive gaming seriously imo

cloud servers? pass

It will have dedicated servers. Just not hosted by providers - Microsoft's deal with EA is that they will provide servers on the XBOX Cloud Server system which is global. HOWEVER, this is the first game that will be using this global system specifically for game servers. I won't bore you with the details, but if it works, it will work well.

I'm keen as shit on this game, but also very wary. Call me cynical, but I think we've seen a lot of excitement for AAA titles that have just ended in farcical disappointment in recent years.

Absolutely. Sick of being disappointed. I've turned in to one of those people who don't pre-order anymore, and just wait to see what everyone else says before I go "HA, SUCKERS, I SAVED ON THAT ONE!".

At least it aint EA/Dice who seem to be going backwards from beta stability.

Myself and a guy at work have been following this immersively. I see not problem with 6v6 + bots of some kind and you can set your titan on a follow command so theres another few players....

It was on my radar but the whole 6v6 thing dropped it way down.

once you see it in action it makes sense.

6 "pilots", can fight on foot AND call in & drive a massive titan robot. OR they can fight on foot with the titan set to follow mode.

as well as that there are AI controlled grunts running round.

it's fast, very very fun, and a real contender for E-sport IMO.

as you all know, large team formats are shit for esports

plus, judging from that footage above....dude doesn't know how to jetpack properly, thats going to be a HUUUGE skill to master. you can traverse whole maps without touching the ground IF you know what you're doing

Summarising Ghosts post, it's the Tribes movement mechanism. You can ski, boost, and use all sorts of motion - if you don't know how, then jump on Ascend and start prac'ing, cos this shit's gonna get loose.

Being developed from ex IW people that left because they didn't like the way cod was going (aside from those being fired) I would hope we have some footage/beta test on Pc. Being only 2months away and we are only seeing alpha demo's now I'm hoping internally they are well within the beta development (although the alpha is looking pretty sweet). I guess time will tell and I hope we learn more about the server side of things soon. This game is really the only thing keeping me going for pc fps gaming so trying not to get my hopes up to much.

The incessant advice from the commander about being close to points better be able to be turned off, cos that shit was annoying as anything in the footage I've watched.

Game looks sweet though, I hope they nail it for PC, I really do. I'll still remain cynical though... Alright, I might get a pre-order... Alright, if there's a sweet collector's I'll get that... ALRIGHT JUST TAKE MY FUCKING MONEY AGAIN EA...

Not announced as yet. Game Debate predicts game requirements when they're not out, and they say decent dual core with 4GB of RAM and a recent GPU (AMD 6000 series) (http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=8045&game=Titanfall).

It sounds like the graphics engine is based off a modified source engine so I would say 2 x 5850s should run it fine. But best to wait to see what the actual requirements will be.

Really? It's super pretty for Source...

From teh wikipedias:

Respawn chose to build Titanfall on the Source game engine early in their production cycle due to their developers' familiarity and its ability to maintain 60 frames per second on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.[8] In an interview, Respawn software engineer Richard Baker said the company chose Source since Portal 2 performed well on the PlayStation 3 with it, and the console was "the riskiest platform in current gen".[8] The company built upon the engine during development in features such as lighting, rendering, visibility, networking, and tools pipelines.[27] The game also uses Microsoft's cloud computing for multiplayer servers, physics, and artificial intelligence.[22] Offloading this non-player activity frees the local console for visual rendering tasks and better graphics,[8] and the developers for game development (instead of backend maintenance).[28] This arrangement also determines world events in the cloud instead of locally, so position and movement data is downloaded simultaneously by all player-clients.[8] The studio's cloud server access is considered vital to the game's viability

Great that they (and EA subsidiary) have used source, given that can be ported to Mac and ValveOS.

However not sure about the cloud stuff at all. The more you rely on the server side to do the work, the more you will need low latency and good speeds in both directions. Not much point in rendering a smooth 60fps (one frame every 16ms) if NZ internet conditions can't provide and receive data in a timely fashion, making the game jerky that way.

Would VDSL2 smooth over that problem?

I am assuming there would be AUS based cloud servers....

VDSL should improve latency and upload speed, but I'm not sure thats going to help with the problem upstream, eg getting the data back and foward from an Australian data centre.

We will just have to wait and see I guess.

The cloud server and availability let alone matchmaking or game set up or however it will be done is a concern. I hope to shit it works. 6v6 will be viable, and I can see it happening like a Left 4 Dead lobby TBH - in fact, if they did it that way, it might be solid.

Time will tell, and I for one look forward to slamming a Titan to the floor and ripping some shit up.

Cheers for linking that article. That should clear up a lot of peoples questions and restore a bit of faith.

However, Since I have not owned a gaming console since the late 1990s. I just have one question.
How well does the xBox cloud perform? Ping wise etc. Hopefully somebody can share their experience with the xBox cloud.

Cheers :)

That's the thing dude, the implementation of game servers on XBOX Live's "Cloud" is a new thing - no one can answer that until Titanfall. =\

They said its based on Microsoft's Azure cloud services.   Maybe someone is using Azure based services and can comment on the latency (if they don't have NZ based servers, I'd worry).

Locations of MS Windows Azure services (I'm guessing this is where XBL Cloud services are) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Azure#Datacenter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Azure#Datacenter) So looks like they are in Sydney and Melbourne (It does mention that they are annouced, so hope they are up soon, if not already). Considering most ping for us to there is about 40ms it shouldn't be to bad. Although of course having NZ services would be optimal I don't see it being a deal breaker.

Those AU servers are "coming soon" please note.. Currently closest Azure POP is Singapore.. Which for latency purposes is about the same as California..

Title: Re: Titanfall General Chat
Post by: Lias on January 27, 2014, 11:21:41 am
Wow, so there is no Azure in NZ?!?   >:(

We can access Azure.. but there is no Azure content hosted in NZ (or currently even in Australia). Just like we have no AWS, Rackspace, or pretty much any global hosting/IAAS/cloud providers.. We're just not big enough market, and hosting is painfully expensive here compared to offshore. We do have some onshore IAAS/Cloud hosting that's purely targeted at Enterprise, but that's really a different kettle of fish.
Title: Re: Titanfall General Chat
Post by: Keeps on January 27, 2014, 05:41:44 pm
If that's the case and that coming soon sign doesn't become a reality before the launch of Titanfall then it sounds like it will flop in NZ. But surely something will come to be, at least for Sydney. Otherwise xbox will have one very unhappy and notably quite large market that is Australia.... Surely.....

Hmmm doesn't sound at all to promising at this stage. But I will live in hope and faith right till the dying end. Then again, that having been said, still no preorder from my camp....

I can tell you now Gliss, it's local support, and dedicated servers.

The server hosting is as has already been discussed, and EA is localised in Aus for Aus/NZ - we now have a disty only in NZ, but fortunately it's the same guys who work for that disty that worked for EA when they had local support here. Either way, we'll be damned sure we're close to the source of any goings on through our Get Some contacts  8)

Call me cynical, but I think we've seen a lot of excitement for AAA titles that have just ended in farcical disappointment in recent years.

And that must make keeping things like this going even harder. You should be commended.

No, I said local support (which it has out of both Aus and NZ), and dedicated servers (just the location of those servers is the issue...).

I am actively talking to the EA guys about this, and the local NZ disty as well. The good news is at least that the problem will be a giant one for Australia as well given the cable connection to Singapore is via Western Australia, so the ping time let alone the performance for anyone on the Eastern Border of Aus will be a giant clusterfuck. Of course, that just means it will be an even more giant, shall we say, titanic clusterfuck for us...

I'm at 140 hours and climbing.. I don't think it's as good as 2142 or BC2, but it's definitely better than BF3.

Worth buying on special anyways Kooky.

In fairness to your original though, Respawn are hardly giving two fucks either, but ultimately where the servers are for the service they have decided to avail of/been sold is not really their choice.

I have to disagree Arsey.

Respawn have known for some time that MS can't/won't get an azure datacenter up in time for launch. They have chosen to continue down the path of only supporting Azure deployed servers rather than use an alternative cloud platform, or an alternative solution (RSP's, public server software, p2p games, etc) That mean's its entirely, 100% Respawn that are at fault.

*edit* I just checked, AWS have been offering Sydney services for about 15 months.. No reason whatsoever Respawn couldn't have built on AWS.

Fair point. I'm probably more on the fence and thus in the camp of "it's both their fucking fault". This is just purely because we're not party to the plentiful conversations and small points that could have been bashed about the place. Nonetheless, I'll try to find out what I can about the server situation for us all.

Titanfall...

This is that stupid game, right?

The one where you have a massive robot (assumedly absurdly expensive robot at that) fall from the sky that you can pilot? To then have it destroyed 4 minutes later by a random jumping on your back and a switch being flipped, ejecting you against your will?

Sounds dumb. I would have put the ejector button on the inside, with the pilot. No?

BF4 was a ginormous go-fuck-yourself and now, having been so burnt so many times, I don't even believe in a AAA title. We'll sell you a fucking beta with no intention to fix it and have you purchase shit in game. Double the takings, half the effort.

Some of the reviews aren't bad.  From Penny Arcade:

Quote
There’s a sort of foodie pub type place near the office where they make a cheeseburger not by placing cheese on a burger, but by ladling some kind of elixir over it.  We asked what it was, and they said it was a mixture of beer and cheese.  I nodded, slowly.  Yes.  I understood, now.

Titanfall is beer cheese.  And once you’ve had it, other things feel like settling.

From what I've just seen on twitter on Vince Zampella's feed (Respawn dev), a tonne of emails from EA with Beta codes went undelivered, so they are going to open up the beta. XBone today, PC tomorrow:

Vince Zampella ‏@VinceZampella 53m

Sounds like a lot of codes EA sent were never delivered. We are working on ways to get everyone in, maybe we need to just open it up

Vince Zampella ‏@VinceZampella 9m

Ok, just heard from @jonshiring. His words are 'Let's break it', so the plan is to make the beta fully open and have you max stress it!

Vince Zampella ‏@VinceZampella 5m

Opening XB1 first, at some point tonight. PC will follow, maybe tomorrow.

I apologise for insinuating you were similar human beings. Just that I knew it was a bearded Wellingtonian on my Facebook who is also part of Blackwatch. I played about 5 rounds of the beta. Game just felt wrong with the AI in it. It was like I wasn't even playing a multilayer game. Game also felt quite bland, after I played those few rounds I felt I had the jist of the game and had no need to play any more.

Throw in the whole no servers thing means there is no way I can buy this on release.

This. Was a fun game but bored me after a few hours was beta afterall, although new maps and maybe player increase for multi would be good
Title: Re: Titanfall General Chat
Post by: Speakman on March 08, 2014, 02:38:59 am
Take the following into account:

- More maps
- more classes of titans (at release there will be three, beta had 1, would not be surprised if there are more later down the track)
- increased quality of gameplay when Aussie servers go live
- Priced lower than usual for a new release

The beta game play was fun enough for me, with the above improvements will be great. I understand, having played a few hours of the beta, why they limited it to 6v6 and introduced bots, no problem at all.

Will purchase when ping is less than 100

More maps and more Titan loadouts is all well and good, but lack of those things is not what makes the game average. Its that its only 6v6 and so much of the combat is padded out shooting bland AI. I don't play multiplayer FPS to shoot AI.

Surely if there is space for bots, they could be human players instead.

More human players = ability for more titans = bigger maps required = consoles fail + console focused so well console. Will still end up getting it as some friends are gagging to play & well their inferior machines won't play the games i play with frames

Anti-cheat just went live:

Q.) So what happens if I get banned?
A.) Great news: you get to keep playing Titanfall! Less-great news: you only get to play with other cheaters. You can play with other banned players in something that will resemble the Wimbledon of aimbot contests. Hopefully the aimbot cheat you paid for really is the best, or these all-cheater matches could be frustrating for you. Good luck.
