My work mates one arrives on Monday. These lil bad boys can run Quake 3 and a shitload more. Perfect for linux users as well. Also the jawdropping price of only $50.00 NZ (what he paid anyway)
Thoughts gogo
-
Looks pretty cool tbh,how does one get hold of it in nz?
-
Awesome.
Will be picking one up when they are cased.

You gotta sign up to a waiting list on element 7 or rs components.
I can't wait to get mine. Placed the order a few weeks ago.
-
element 14
brothers mate in the Uk has one already - we are going to order a couple for work
-
Work mates one arrives on Monday. Lucky sodd, wish I ordered when he did.
-
Can you let us know how it runs? I am well curious about this to see if it is as good as they say it will be
-
Got an email about the ordering stuff today.
-
I will be invited to order on the 25th :)
-
Unfortunately there's like 3 months lead time :/
-
I'll wait, and see what people manage to do with it.
-
So so interested. But don't really have a need for one :/
Though it would be nice to have a GNU machine again.
-
GNU machine
TERRIBLE, out with you!
-
The pun? :P
You LOVED it.
-
The pun? :P
You LOVED it.
Also, GNU (or at least GNU+Linux, as my post originally said) because otherwise Stallman will cut off my hands with katanas.

(yeah it's old, but fuck you it's good!)
-
So mine arrived today. Excited to get it going, except i failed to read the power supply requirements and it requires 700mA and all i have is a bunch of 500mA cellphone chargers. Atleast this gives me a reason to buy a 1A charger, since my phone uses that current to charge and i have been charging it on a 500mA one.
-
Could you not just charge it from a powered USB slot in the meantime?
-
Like like matt said buy a powered USB wall charger, ones designed for newer phones or tablets will probably pump out 1A and may come in handy in the future.
-
i'd love to know what you're all using yours for xD
-
Not sure what you guys meant. I thought my post implied i was going to buy a 1A wall charger. Anyway i did that, and got it powered up. It runs reasonably smoothly. Got up to trying to get samba to work on it, to network my windows drives in. Will probably have a go at playing some hd content as well, to see how well it does the job of a htpc.
-
Lol my work mates one is epic. He is going to get up to all sorts of stuff with his one hehe. Cranks out Quake 3 like a boss as well !

Well I meant running it from another computer's USB slot. Hopefully it works off my TV's.
-
And yes Matt, you can run it off USB power :D
-
Well I meant running it from another computer's USB slot. Hopefully it works off my TV's.
It says on their site not to try power it off computer usb ports/usb hubs. But that may be just because usb ports don't all do the same current. If your TV is anything like mine, i can't imagine it working just because most TVs can't power harddrives, which i imagine have similar power demands.

http://www.raspberrypi.org/
Raspberry Pi: Microchip PC. They are very, um, 'interesting': As powerful as the Original Xbox (but with better graphical capabilities) and run on a version of Debian.
They cost $25 USD or $35 USD and take any sized SD card as a Hard Drive.
This roughly equates to $50 NZD for the $35 USD version.
Does anyone own one?
-
This is a joke. The master of the rez doesn't even browse the forum before started a new thread. For shame.
http://www.getsome.co.nz/showthread.php?81771-Rasberry-PI-Best-invention-since-sliced-bread.
But I do own one. They are pretty cool. Haven't got around to doing much with it though. Been just too busy.
-
You won't win GetSome'er of the year with this nonsense Tiwa :P
They do look very cool though. I'd like to own one but I feel like I wouldn't use it for its full potential.
They're Linux right? I no know Linux.
I spose if they can run old games and Windows XP, I could find a use....
... Wonder what Dwarf Fortress would do..?
-
Workmates one runs fine off his mobo USB ports.
-
Sounds all good in da hood. But I suppose powering it off a TV would be pretty dodge regardless, given that the TV gets turned off quite often, haha.
Ordered mine yesterday, plus case :D
-
I have no real need for one atm, but I do enjoy playing with the work mates one ^^ Best bang for buck 2012 imo.

Raspberry vs Rasberry!
Either way: I claim this thread for a Raspberry Pi vs Cotton Candy (http://www.pcworld.com/article/244278/meet_cotton_candy_the_dualcore_android_usb_device.html) showdown thread!
edit: Could I get a Merge to the Rasberry thread please?

At $50 for the Ethernet enabled version, it seems to be a pretty good deal.
My flats Viera tv keeps crashing on some video files. Said files work perfectly well on PC/Laptop via HDMI.
-
Pretty much what I was thinking of getting one for Tiwa, best little HTPC in the world ^^
-
Don't think I could part with mediaportal tbh >_>
-
Can this be used as a processor for powering the brain of an army of nucleared powered cyborg robots consiting of a metal endoskeleton covered by living human tissue?
If it fits the above requirements, I would be intrested.
-
Lol Space, plans on taking over the world ?
-
To Arduino, or to Raspberry Pi....that is the question....
-
For those who have one already...
...How much does it cost to ship one of these?
-
About $50 all up I think dude.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=489501325 Check out this Muppet scalping his off for $120, they come back up for order on Friday too....I think that's so immoral.

Welcome to the internet
You must be new here
-
Yeah, mine cost about $63 with shipping, conversion fees, and a little plastic case.
-
I'm going to buy one. I think I have to.
I see people are buying little 3.5' LCD screens for like 25$ and wiring them up for the portability... o_o Shit these things are cool.

Harden up you wuss. Linux is easier than the microsofts.
Plus you'll find that most old games are either ported or will work in wine.
and that most indy stuff was cross platform to begin with.
-
Pffffffffffffffffffffffffffftshshshshshsshhhhhhhh.
I've changed my view. I'm excited to learn about linux now. I'm getting so moist over these little things. FUCK I want one!

do these things overheat any?

Now...

No.
I thought the C-64 Joystick Emulators were weird, but these things take the cake. Still so strange to see something that size be more powerful than an xbox.
-
No.

I'm curious about that. When it can just handle full detailed quake 3, would it be able to handle xbox games?
Pic related, Its a sexy beast.
Open it in a seperate tab / save it if you want to see it in all its glory.

Probably wont handle xbox games.
to emulate another hardware platform take almost 5x the computational power of the platform you are emulating.. thus why even high end pc's still cant emulate ps3 well...
-
with an ARM based processor you could probably get android up and running on it fairly easily.. DIY tablet ...

I heard this was for linux...HOLY BEJESUS.
Don't google, you'll ruin the surprise.
if you're on windows 7, Probably vista too, you'll need to go Control panel - > Programs and features - > "Turn windows features on or off" - > Make sure Telnet client is ticked.
for XP you'll be sweet,
Then go into Command prompt and type
"Telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl"
It's not the whole thing, probably less than 1/4? I'd guess. Still, awesome lol.
Sorry if thats extremely old lol, but I hadn't heard of it, in my many years of the internet.
I think i've been inspired to write a text adventure game now.

I knew something from 2006 was probably going to have been posted here already, and I suppose searching that command line would of confirmed that for me.
But i'm lazy.

"Is that the telnet starwars?" he says, without looking or even properly reading the posts.

Ahahaha
I haven't seen it all.
I've been on the internet for many years now and only just come across this. Hope you enjoy it.

Someone here just had theirs arrive, pretty sweet wee device, can't think of a use for it myself though lol. Perhaps linux and webcam for security monitoring?

could you ask when they ordered and how many weeks till dispatch it said? Want to know when i'll be getting mine :@
-
Sure thing, will ask him on Monday :)
-
I ordered 22nd may, and got it 23rd june.
-
5 weeks is the info ive been given
-
ordered it around 2 , maybe 3 weeks ago and at the time said 12 weeks dispatch.
What i'm really wanting to know is how long after that ;p
-
For every time you ask the same question it will be delayed by a week.
-
Had a go at running raspbmc (XMBC for pi) today. Seems like its runs alright when you are doing one thing. However if it tries to use its plugins in the background, you get a bit of stutter. Also couldn't seem to get my external HDD to run on it. Maybe it was because it wasn't getting enough power, or it could of been a format issue. Ended up wiping it to get OpenELEC which is a XMBC project which is meant to run a lot smoother on the pi. But that might have to be done on another day.
-
What resolution?
-
1920x1080. Read around a bit, and some of the video lag/stutter is caused by trying to run it at 60hz, which seems to be a bit too much for the pi. But it only allowed me to drop down to 50Hz at my res, rather than the 24hz some other people had said they got it running at. Probably should of played around a bit more on raspbmc, but got a bit annoyed, so thought i would load the OpenELEC.
Another thing to note, for anyone looking to use this as a HTPC, is it does not hardware decode MPEG-2 because of licencing issues.

Dear customer,Thanks again for your Raspberry Pi order, reference number #HerberlyGerberlyDerberly. We are busy working with the suppliers who provide components for your Raspberry Pi to ensure you receive your order as quickly as possible.
Since receiving your order, we have been advised that our next batch of approximately 40,000 Raspberry Pi’s will now be arriving during September, with further deliveries expected in October. This delay is due to the very high level of demand on the core Raspberry Pi processor chip. Unfortunately, this means that your order could be delayed by up to 8 weeks, although we are trying to reduce this as much as possible. We have updated the delivery schedule displayed in our FAQ’s (https://eu.rs-email.com/pub/cc?_ri_=X0Gzc2X%3DWQpglLjHJlTQGu3vWmG41iGlt8453uHu4zg7zaP37Xn5L8H9zezbEYczawsJVXtpKX%3DSRRASTWDC&_ei_=EolaGGF4SNMvxFF7KucKuWO4BkDWnsimO1a-pd6xgvgoR6gjUemnzb-CnIrP7zdn-y7mbEk779vZTilfZf0.)and on the Raspberry Pi forum. As soon as we receive confirmation of any improvements from our manufacturers, we will advise you.
Please accept our apologies for this delay and be assured we are doing everything we can to ensure the fastest possible delivery of your Raspberry Pi.

I'm a bit over rasp pi.
I wanna beagle board, a real computer!
-
http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/1640 looks epic
I want one of these just so I can find a use for that awesome case.
-
Element 14 look to have these in stock at them moment for $48 + 23 for preloaded SD card and 13 for case.
Don't know if I can be bothered with it at the moment. Have no idea of Linux and probably better things to do with my time.
Given time I'm sure there will be lots of good software developed for these.

Careful what revision you get though:

Hopefully, that post I made 2 days ago was them saying they were going to send me a latest revision :X
-
Mine finally arrived today :)
-
When did you order?
-
25th June!!!! Only shipped on the 4th of October though.
-
Hmmm. I ordered 30th June. Maybe one day. Then I will download ALL of the torrents.
-
Mine finally arrived today :)
!!!
My internet is capped but...
I've got some questions. Is it 512mb ram, you can tell by looking at it's RAM chip (or the big black square chip which has SAMSUNG written on it), under SAMSUNG that is a bunch of writing, does it say 2G or 4G? 4G == 512mb, 2g = 256mb
Another question
Do you know if the usb has had its fuses removed?
-

But this pic is from the PI site
(http://www.raspberrypi.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/RaspiModelB-1024x902.png)
And it claims it is 512MB so f#ck knows :)
I can see FU1 and FU2 on the 5V circuit leading to the USB ports so guess they have not been removed.
-
The fuse wasn't removed, it was changed.
Can't remember where I read the changes though, on their forum somewhere
-
^ Something or rather. I just panicked when I bought it, and a month later I see people complaining about problems
-
Got it today, yaya :D
-
Well? Go on...
-
Oh right. Installed xbmc, seems to go okay. I'll get another keyboard before trying anything too crazy, hopefully it can be a torrent machine as well.
-
Also, new Arduino called 'due', 32 bit!!! fuck yes!
-
So how many Pi users are there on GetSome?
-
Also, new Arduino called 'due', 32 bit!!! fuck yes!
this - im going to get work to order one of these to test
-
Also, new Arduino called 'due', 32 bit!!! fuck yes!
This, should be much better for webservers than the 2560
-
Anyone else running XBMC on thier Pi? If so have you also installed the Navi-X plugin?
Having a few issues with the performance of Navi-X and was wondering if it was normal :)
-
I haven't yet. Still waiting for keyboard.
-
I haven't yet. Still waiting for keyboard.
Same question about the RAM matt, What does it say on the CPU / RAM chip?
-
Mine is Rev 2.0
-
Can it do mad skids (The real questions here)
-
I got mine today
now what the hell do I do?
Mildly disappointed in myself.

Make it self-aware.

I think I may have just found a possible alternative to the Pi.
1.6Ghz quad-core, 1GB of DDR3 and running Jelly Bean 4.1
http://www.ebay.com/itm/121025584210?_trksid=p5197.c0.m619
So tempting, especially since for about $20 you can get a pretty nifty QWERTY remote as well. What do I choose???

1 out of 1 computer electrical engineers recommend the beagle board over everything.
that's 100%!

I'd personally go with raspberrypi because of the overwhelming support you'll have available

Yea, I'm leaning more towards the Pi, though seeing as they're both so incredibly cheap, may as well get both! :D
-
I installed raspbmc on mine and just hooked it up to tv. got it setup to stream movies from my pc heh
-
I think it'll struggle a bit with 1080p x264
-
even going through the ui at 1080p almost shits itself.
720p is fine for me, heck even 480p. im not fussy
-

it's quite interesting you think the rasp pi is well supported, cause it isn't.
beagle board give you full tech specs, the software aspects will be mostly the same.
-
I found the raspberrypi forums filled with much more information, more builds, more users helping users than the beagle forums o-o
-

That's quite disappointing, there is no advantage using a Raspi over a ATV2 for 720p XBMC other then being slightly cheaper.
Need cheap 1080p XBMC units. Guess i'll be waiting for Ouya to hit our shores...

Anyone doing anything great with theirs. Mine has ended up forgotten in a pile of electronics, as i end up spending my free time on some other random thing.

I haven't done shit with my raspberry PI.
It's slow as shit. I wasted 100$.
Fuck.

the work one is sitting in an office at work - i had a Ardiuno Due turn up on my desk on wed - going to make a buffer board so i can connect my 5V servo and IR sensors and start playing with it

Sell it on TM then, should get $60+

I was going to offer to buy, but then I then I thought I'd probably just end up in the same situation.
If I had a purpose I'd buy one.
-

Will do but I feel like i'll get negative rep just for saying shit like "as much power as the original xbox!"
Oh well, Cheers :)

Started using mine to play movies when at the bach / someone else's house, where carting a computer around is just too much effort (I don't believe in laptops, they are the devils work)
Did anyone else buy/keep/still use theirs?

We use RedHat for our AS, their support is amazing.
As for badly coded apps, yes.
It seems that there is an abundance of bad Java Developers, but that also goes for most other languages too.
A lot of issues can be fixed with a decent IDE, such as IntelliJ

So very much this. Most days I wish java to die.
Fucking Java is like "Oh you want to make one quick config change for this system, please wait 30mins while I load this bloatware then crash when you click the first button".
-
Java is a tool. I don't see how people can hate it.
-
Java is great, like how an open window on a sunny day is great to let a nice breeze in. Unfortunately its all the useless people who leave that window open to let other useless people break into your house and steal all your shit that lets the usefulness of Java down.
Java is a tool. I don't see how people can hate it.
The thinking goes along the line of:
"Music is a tool and I hate Nicki Minaj and everyone who likes Nicki Minaj music doesnt know what music is"

You honestly have to ask yourself if you really will use it. You'll probably get a lot more use out of it than me if you're already super into programming (I like it but i've never gotten the time to do more than Garrys Mod stuff)
After, what, a year or two? I've only just started using mine as a easy way to play usb / external movies without lugging my computer everywhere. A laptop would be just as good, except I think laptops are the tools used by Reptilian time wizards to spy on the mongolian mcdonald share holders.
Beware.

I've got a couple of these little guys running at home, I think they're great for the money.
Got one running RaspyFi (http://www.raspyfi.com/raspyfi-1-0-audiophile-linux-is-out/), An awesome Music streaming/radio appliance distro and another running my home phone system (AKA an Asterisk Box (http://www.raspberry-asterisk.org/)) - Check these out if you have a spare few hours to get something awesome running.

Mines bitcoin currency by processing a specific algorithm essentially.
Surprised you don't know much about it Pyro :S
Got my pi setup last night with motion as a security camera, captures 720p footage quite well. Found some python scripts that I might take a look into how they work and create my own to upload to google drive etc
Works pretty damn well tbh o:
I'm expecting many cat emails
-
This just in, codex wants catcalls for his mocap drag footage.
Also yeah, I'm aware of bitcoin. But I find the idea pretty fucking ludicrous tbh.
I mean it _seems_ like it should be a good idea. But it just isn't.
The number of fraud cases and shit popping up all over the place about it pretty much sums up how I feel, thus have not paid any attention to it at all.
In short, although the algorighm seems legit... it even accounts for inflation... people can't control the implementation, but they do control the mining and banking (which is completely unregulated)... so yeah, fucking terrible news or a fake demand economy.
TL:DR; bitcoin is building a house of cards on top of a skyscraper in harbourside Wellington. With ALL the cards.
-
Pyro, I share you feelings regarding bitcoins.
I thought I was the only one.
-
Also yeah, I'm aware of bitcoin. But I find the idea pretty fucking ludicrous tbh.
I mean it _seems_ like it should be a good idea. But it just isn't.
The basis of money is faith in the monetary system
The basis of bitcoin is faith in its algorithm
The difference is: Bitcoin cannot print money. You just have to trust the algorithm
-
But you can steal it!
The internet, where NOTHING is safe. Shit I know... lets make a monetary system with real world value!
In my eyes, steam wallet > bitcoin.
At least one has a purpose. The other just exists to appeal to my ego. I can amass, but not really spend where I choose to.
-
More and more bitcoin options are appearing, you can even use bitcoin on newegg now lol
-
Yeah, artificial demand will do that.
But I've seen enough shit in the papers about theft and manipulation to ward me clear of knowing more for now.
-
^I don't really see why, it's no worse than the fraud, black market use, manipulation, and laundering that happens with "real currency"
Anyway
Model B+ has been shown off
http://www.raspberrypi.org/introducing-raspberry-pi-model-b-plus/ (http://www.raspberrypi.org/introducing-raspberry-pi-model-b-plus/)
A shame I only got my B a month ago at most, might pick up 2 or 3 of the B+ model though once cases are out
-
A problem I see with bitcoin is, currently the userbase is small (comparatively), and the processing power available to process transactions is ample because we have lots of people mining bitcoins.
However the return from bitcoin mining will decrease overtime as I understand, so less people will do it. However as more and more people start to use bitcoins, will there be enough processing power to handle all the transactions in a timely manner? Or will I have to wait a couple of hours to buy a coffee while I'm waiting for my transaction to be validated?
However I'm mostly ignorant of how it all works, so it might not be a problem.
-
So Raspberry Pi model B+ was released today (well... the news of it's release hit today).
Same shit, different periperal connector combinations!
Audio is now 4 ring jack, 4th ring being for video (instead of RCA)
there are now 4 USB ports, AND the ethernet adapter (which was/is also just a USB peripheral soldered on).
The GPIO pins have increatsed to 40 or something (from ~28 iirc)
The SD card has decreased to micro size, WITH a clippy lock thing so it won't just fall out.
The voltage regulators mean that there is more supply, and it's more stable. Eg. you can run a 2.5" hdd direct from the Pi itself now, without need for a powered hub.
And it uses less power than the non + version (I assume in general, not when loaded up with usb things).
Camera and other ribbon adapter thing are still there.
Same chip & other bits, from what I gather (same system on chip at least - no processing power or ram upgrade).
But the PCB looks even smaller! (not entirely sure if actually is)
Seems pretty cool. Just before I invested too, lucky I held out!
Except demand is high of course, so it's all out of stock everywhere (that I could see)!
Pimoroni already have Pibow casings to fit.
-

No worse, no. But SEEMINGLY more endemic/systemic/prolific.
Probably just because media hops on the hate wagon whenever it can.

Yeah the exposure may be higher because of media selectively choosing to report more on it due to the "omg digital currency what do" thing but realistically I'd say that the transactions are more secure then current currency methods tbh.
-
Yeah, just because you live in the future, cunt. :P
I really want one now, been meaning to get one for a while... but... when you need a screen too suddenly a 30 quid purchase goes up to ~250+ quid. Sucks, can just about get a full (not bad but not amazing) notebook for that.
-
You don't need a screen, just use ssh
Configure to SSH stage on a tv or some shit, you can do it easily if you look around
-

OOh yes, switch voltage regulators are up to 96% efficient compared to linear which are usually 50%
And yes the voltage is very stable, especially under varying loads.
-
After formatting mine and starting it again it runs so much better now lol
Definitely looking into getting a b+ though
-

Sweet. I'll just install linux blind. Don't mind me, I know the key touch sequence by heart.
PRO GEEK, GOD TIER. DON'T FUCK WITH ME.
PS. My B+ update was better than yours.
-
Well you have to load an image onto the SDC first anyway, pretty sure you can preconfigure it that way for ssh?
-
Hmm yeah I must admit, doing a traditional install seems a bit nonsense in this case... argh you found my kryptonite!
I guess I'll find out, I just gave in and bought one.
-
B+ I hope :D
Maybe you can fix my time/date issue :P
The time syncs correctly but it's always exactly one day behind
gmt+12 set
etc
Syncs on power on
I have nfi why

iphones have had this issue for a long time with birthdays and contacts..
its to to with UTC vs Local time and how apps read and respond to this, the date math is always a problem.
thats why in DB's we store everything as UTC and then have an offset column that populates with the Timezone correction based in minutes corresponding to daylight savings or not.
that way no matter what reads the UTC + Offset it will always be correct, or in some cases the DB utc time + browser locale offset.
-
Yeah doesn't really help with the system time though.

Ensure timezone and locale are set propers, not just that you've told ntp that +12 or whatever. These vary slightly from distro to distro I think, so best just look it up.
Or/and:

Got a swanky new monitor to go with the pi kit, so so glorious IPS.
Winning.
Plugged it all in, turned on, had a bit of fun installing via the NOOBS thing.
Haven't had a chance to get into it big time yet because of a couple of factors... one being that I'm super busy.
But Raspberry xbmc thing looks pretty cool.
Raspbian not so much, because it's a faff to change resolution... and it doesn't default to 1920x1080 :/
-
I got a wifi usb dongle and set up raspbmc on my pi, got the xbmc app on my phone so can just use that as a remote. Works great, streaming from movies from my pc to the raspberry pi

Yeah had issues with it sleeping the wifi, had to make a keep alive script in cronjob. Trying to work out flock still though >__<

HDMI only option. Nah, defaults to some weird reso, iirc it has 7s in it somewhere.
Shit I'll overcome when I get the ability to do cool shit like muck around with it a bit more. Busy chap at the moment!

"The World's First Raspberry PI 3D Printer"

This video briefly outlines the building and testing of a unique, home-built, 3D printer which uses a Raspberry PI as its "brain" or CPU.
If you Google (or Bing!) Raspberry PI 3D printer you will find several people who claim to have made "Raspberry PI *Powered* 3D Printers", but if you examine them in detail, they are not actually *powered* by the Raspberry PI at all. These people use the standard firmware which comes with the 3D printer and replace the PC interface with the Raspberry PI - hence the PI is not controlling/powering the printer at all, but simply sending buffered GCODE commands to the pre-built printer and acting as a neat user interface to display print progress etc. This unique 3D printer is not like those; the PI actually controls every part of the machine including, but limited to the motors, heaters and temperature sensors. The 800MHz PI runs the time-critical (virtually real-time), dedicated program with great ease making it possible for a 3-dimensional, plastic (ABS or PLA) model to be printed layer by layer.

That video was so boring.
Plus it is irrelevant now. Bitcoin is dead as a stable form of currency. At USD$240 per bitcoin it is uneconomical to mine it and the supply is too slow in responding to rises or falls in value.
If a real life currency acted like Bitcoin, then prices in shops would have to be updated daily. You could argue that Bitcoin can be viewed more as a modicum of exchange, but the American Inland Revenue Service disagrees

Hands on: the Raspberry Pi 2 is powerful, but you still get what you pay for
By Mikael Ricknäs, IDG News ServiceFeb 2, 2015 1:15 PMe-mailprint
The Raspberry Pi 2 packs more memory and a faster processor than its predecessor, which is enough to turn it into a more functional PC, but don’t expect any miracles: It’s still a $35 product.
The Raspberry Pi 2 was launched on Monday at an event in London, and is a big step forward. That’s because it has twice the amount of memory—1GB of RAM—as the Pi 1, and is powered by a quad-core ARM Cortex A7 processor running at 900MHz, which is much more powerful that then Pi 1’s 700MHz single core ARM processor.
These upgrades are enough to turn the Pi 2 into a usable PC, according to Eben Upton, Raspberry Pi founder and CEO. Even though the original model could be used as a PC, you had to make excuses for it because of the limited hardware capacity, but that is no longer the case with the Pi 2, Upton said.

Only if you are a bad guy. White Hats get banned.
http://sghuffe.com/coinbase-to-white-hat-hacker-we-dont-want-your-bitcoin/ (http://sghuffe.com/coinbase-to-white-hat-hacker-we-dont-want-your-bitcoin/)
Less than a year ago, Vinny Troia, CEO and principal security consultant of Night Lion Security and a certified white hat hacker, was sent a compliance form by US bitcoin exchange Coinbase, where he had an account.
Coinbase wanted to know how Troia was using bitcoin and his account.
...
The ransoms Troia helps his clients pay are those stemming from ransomware attacks, which have surged in number over the past few years. Many, like the well-publicized WannaCry attack, are asking for bitcoin. And the documents?
Troia said:
“We do breach investigations a lot of times. If a fraudster is saying they’re selling my client’s stolen documents, the only way to make sure they have what they say they have is to buy those documents.”
According to Troia, Coinbase “did not like that at all”.
Coinbase then asked the IT expert whether he had a letter from the Department of Justice giving him permission to do those things. No, Troia said. Upon further research, Troia has not found that any such permission exists.
But, “I have my clients authorizing me to do this,” he said.
Coinbase sent Troia back an email explaining that those actions were against the exchange’s rules and shut down his account. Troia then tried setting up an account with his wife’s information, but that too was shut down. Then he tried his brother. Shut down. Then his mother. Shut down.
“My entire family is blocked from Coinbase,” he said.
