Haven't heard anything, but had the same 'OMFG what did that ad say!?' experience as you - though I only actually got to play the original relatively recently. Hopefully it'll pwn.

I still play Colonization from time to time. It is still a fantastic game with few rivals.
-
It's looks fun and only $50.I will buy it if it has hotseat.

Wot he sed.
Being a huge fan of the Panzer series, this is gonna be sweeeeet.

Still AOE III for me tbh.

That game nearly broke me, its AI re movement of units was beyond retarded.
Also multiplayer the most frustrating multiplayer game ever. Me and my very good mate nearly ended in a fist fight (well very heated words), before realising how fucking ridiclous it was and swearing to never play again.
Have to say tho using suicide gunpowder dudes to blow up their fort = hillerous

big big changes from the other civs...should be interesting
-
Can't wait for civ V better make a thread for it to track/discuss all the changes.
But no more stacks will be such a refreshing change.

Completely agree.
The stack of DOOM was so gay.

Civ II catapult stacks were the bizzomb, don't nobody be hatin'.

Worked in Civ4 amazingly well as well, but not as well as stacks of doom of artillery.
This is going to play havoc in multiplayer tho, as everyone likes to play in high speed, will be like let me shoot and shit man, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MOAR TIME MOAR TIME NOOOOOOOOO
-
never bothered with that aye, by the time i could build artillary i could get planes and bombers....and so i used them...awesome units.

Spoiler Alert: New Colonization is shit, just as I expected it to be. Before Colonizations release a person made new terrain tile sets for Civ 4 which made it really fun and challenging.
New Colonization is neither of those. They messed up the base balance and then just went on doing the wrong thing after the wrong thing.

I've been playing this (original Colonization) alot recently.
FreeCol is full of bugs and horrible changes with a perspective that CANNOT BE CHANGED (I am serious, they refuse to change it from isometric)
I've also learned a huge amount of information about the original game as I've been trying to do a remake (due to FreeCol being arse).

E-mail checked, read, and replied
Yeah, probably he made those too, they are from Microprose as well... or just used his engine....
He told me everything should be lost by now....
Let me quote him (Brian Reynolds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Reynolds_(game_designer))):
Quote: I wish I could help you with the file formats, but I’m afraid I don’t have any of the materials for the game. Not only have I changed companies twice since those days, but also the original company I was with (Microprose) has changed hands many times, being sold to Spectrum Holobyte, to Hasbro Interactive, to Infogrames, and now I think the parent company is Atari. The original studio/office was closed several years ago too, so I’m not sure if the source material even exists any more, alas. I remember that “SS” files were “sprite series” files, and might contain one sprite or an animation. We used a variable run-length-encoding scheme, but boy I don’t remember a thing other than that. I’m afraid I can’t even remember what an FF was at all … maybe it was instructions for an animation. Possibly PIX represents some generic picture file format. I hate to say it but your only conceivable avenue forward is likely to be through Atari, and after 13 years I’m not sure they could find the stuff even if they want to.
A pity indeed, but I also contacted Atari, as he suggested, but I got no reply (as I expected lol)...
The source code to original Colonization is totally lost :(
There is hope though! There is an extractor for the graphics written in Java:
