Okay for starters: I dont like this whole idea of full body motion controller malarky. Its gimmicky. Its stupid. Its exhausting.
This afternoon I got my first and probably last ever go at using the Xbox Kinect. S.I.T purchased a device and it is to be used for testing purposes.
The setup was fairly painless. Voice recognition is required for some reason. Also there is a 'pause' posture where if you perform said posture, the game 'pauses'. This can get quite annoying when you're stretching as it misreads it as a pause.
BASICALLY if you've used eyetoy then you've used this. Its just a minor upgrade. The only positive thing I have to say about the kinect is: It has some amazing motion capture technology which I would love, LOVE to play around with. Unfortunately its facial expression detection isnt as good as the playstation move.
Here is a video of me playing Kinetic Adventures: River Race. It was pretty immersive using the chair. The only reason I am playing is because the detector refused to acknowledge the presence of the guy standing in front of it and somehow picked up my skeleton when I was sitting behind him.
There are more videos (you can even see another guy filming me playing in this video) and I'll try to put them online.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEC8Ch2J-Xs
One of the funniest things is at the end of a game it takes pictures of 'highlights', very similar to any eyetoy game. One of the guys playing kept removing his clothes so the snapshots looked like a very energetic strip show.
p.s I will also not get out of a chair for a game which does not involve murdering something.
-
I cannot wait to karate chop ghost in the cock while pretending to play some bullshit kinect game. Prodding his cock with a move controller makes us question our sexuality too much to be a valid option for genital punishment.
Also, it tends to make the virtual dog thing jump at his junk, which is creepy. Electric dogs know how to hurt us!
-
I played it for the first time tonight and thought it was alright.
BTW Tiwaking, your video is marked as private.

I know. The video is not on my channel and our lecturer made the creator take it down and I am pretty sure I wont be allowed to upload the other videos I took.
So if you missed watching the video: Tough.
Also, give these ideas a try when you next play:
1) Start randomly dancing. It looks hilarious. No break dancing though, dont want you to hurt yourself.
2) Play with your crotch. Urr, I mean "Use your crotch as a controller". Yeah, I got a few disturbing looks when I said I was going to do this. Please make sure you keep your clothes on.
3) Start taking your clothes off while playing. The pictures Kinetic Adventures takes makes it look like the game is stripping you naked while you play.
-
Eyetoy for the PS2 didn't take up too much room and you could play it sitting down. But from what I've seen to play kinect you need the size of a lounge to play it, which is probably why they're marketing it towards family fun over an OMGFORZAROFLHALO experience. I do like the idea though, just not right for "serious" gamers at the moment.

Wait, what??
Why post it if no one can watch it, illogical!

A major breakthrough in the quest for interactive porn.
This afternoon I spent some time playing a surprisingly fun game:
Harmonix: Dance Central (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dance_Central)
This is where the kinetic really shines, reading your feeble attempts at dance moves. HOWEVER: During the song breaks you get to go into 'freestyle mode' where it will take snapshots of you in action and show them after the musical break ends.
Apparently they can get uploaded to your xbox live account and, if you are naked during the snap shots, you will be banned.
edit:
Wait, what??

It was online for one day before being removed. I would put it on my channel, but I know 100% that one of my classmates will watch it in class and my lecturer will catch me.
Then I shall be in really big trouble.

This is true, but FPS devs may one day use the kinect in addition to standard controllers to give you cool shit like headtracking.
The hate towards this device from hardcore gamers has been quite hilarious, they are making stuff like this to expand into other demographics and bring more people into gaming, it shouldn't even effect you.
Well unless you think its edgy or cool to be a gamer and want to stay in the minority.
I've shown afew non-gamers the kinect and my workmate has done the same, and quite afew of them are now excited about playing games when they never have been before.
-
^^ Not true at all, I mean, consoles do the same thing, but thanks to consoles the Battlefield series has changed completely.
Where's my BF3?
Also, COD is crap as fuck now because of consoles.

Definitely, not reallly a big fan of the BC series, only play them because they're there. Hoping BF3 will be super-über-epic on the PC with 128 players with BF2ness + more and consoles only getting like 16 or 32 (Maybe 128 for PS3 like MAG) players or whatever the max they can handle is. BC seems to be scaled down to seem more similar to COD that a traditional BF game.

Hi Bell!
I've been working on a, well, I've been trying to make a fighting game which is basically a 2D fighter with a more interesting input system.
It reads in the hand signs/hand inputs you use to cast spells, exactly like in the anime Naruto. You have your normal 2D interface and the ability to use the special moves either through the interface or two 'preset' (commonly used) moves.
This means that people who are not obsessive fans of the series can simply stick to using the two moves (which they can change) whereas hardcore addicts have almost free reign of any move they know.
Using the Wiimote works but its abit clunky. Since I will get to use the Kinetic next year in HCI, how well can the Kinetic read hand/fingers?
I noticed in Dance Central that it is fairly amazing at capturing a persons motions. I was very surprised because it seems so much more of a polished interface in Dance Central than in the flagship title: Kinetic Adventures.

i like the kinect and i dont even own an xbox - sonys move is little more that wii motes with object tracking, where as the kinect is amazing technology

If and when Kinetic is able to be used with XNA games, i'll get it.

It doesn't really do fingers.
How exactly are you going to get to use the Kinetic next year, are you going to use the hacked libs?
The hackers have done some decent stuff so far but are still along way off decent skeleton tracking.
The dance central dudes worked really hard on the UI interface and it shows, it wasnt easy being in the first group of kinect developers because nothing had been figured out, everyone had to prototype a shitload to see what worked.
Dance central also has the advantage of time, kinect adventures has to give you instant feedback to make your avater move and jump as soon as possible.
Dance central doesn't need to give you instant feedback because it is just a scoring device, it doesn't actually translate your actions into the game world like adventures.

Thanks for the feedback Bell :)
I assumed Ken knew the ins and outs of xbox kinetic, but it looks like some actual study is going to be required.
From the kinetic menu systems a remake of Arx Fatalis would definitely be doable. Might try and make that idea reality.

Sounds like you might be enjoying this gimmicky stupid exhausting motion control busniess :P
-
I have never got this negative view of kinetic from more serious gamers. Kinetic has impressed me a lot. It seems a prime example of giving game devs good tools, and letting them innovate good games, rather than trying to adapt existing games to that. I would probably never get a ps move or wii, but i would consider the kinetic
-
I've pretty much played all of the release titles now.
Some titles are complete and utter shit, while others have really impressed me with how fun they are.
Great:
Kinect sports - nearly all of these games are fun especially against flatmates
Dance Central - really polished and a well thought out use of Kinect, just abit hard to get into as a male but chicks love it.
Good:
Fitness evolved - if you like fitness stuff it is really good, you can't cheat it so really get a proper workout (I was sore the next morning after a 20min session)
Kinect Adventures - pretty fun with afew people but can get old quick and is boring single player
Bad:
Sonic Riders - really shit controls, especially the menus
Joy Ride - just a terrible idea gets boring after 1 lap, why the fuck would you want to control a car with a virtual steering wheel that gives you no feedback the whole time I wanted to grab a controller and if the game had a controller it would still be the worst racing game i've seen in years. 1/10
Kinectimals - this is aimed at kids so hard to judge, but it just seems to slow and repetitive I think kids would enjoy Kinect sports far more than this but maybe 6 year old girls would love it I just don't know.
-
I've pretty much played all of the release titles now.
I know this is very short notice but:
I have to demonstrate the XNA 'cannon game' running on the xbox360 on Monday. How hard would it be to make it work using the Kinect as input?
Libraries, code and tool advice is incredibly welcome :D
I've got all monday to do it and will have pretty much free reign over its use.
-
You're probably the most expert on the Kinect here.
Kinect isn't supported by XNA yet.
The closest someone could do at the moment is some kind of video processing from a video stream maybe.
-
So, the Kinect is about 100% better than Move?

No idea use google, im not sure how the hacked librabies are going but I'd say they would be quite messy to work with currently and trying to hook them up to XNA and your xbox would be a big stretch by monday
I only develop using the official licensed kinect SDK as an licensed Xbox developer so there is noway you can get the same tools and libraries as I do.

Move is better for traditional gaming.
Kinect is better for casual gaming.

I would call them different peripherals that wouldn't be able to compete against each other. You could own both systems and still use both without favouring one over the other.
-

Playstation move comes with a Marital Aid. That has be worth some points.
-
Move is more accurate then kinetic as well. Kinetics accuracy, from what i have read, is on par with the wii.
So it all comes down to whether you look more ridiculous waving your arms around in the air with a glowing wizard staff, or without one.
-
Move provides the rotation and position of one single point in 3D space with a high degree of accuracy.
Kinect provides a depth map and 20 of so positions in 3D space with an average degree of accuracy.
Quite different really.

I meant in the sense of comparing kinetic to move. Obviously kinetic has capabilities, the move doesn't (and i would consider it much better than the move), but if you wanted them for the same application (say a game where you need to navigate around tight corners), the move would be better.

This makes me a sad panda. I was hoping to surprise Ken yesterday.
I wonder what will happen when the advisory council finds out that they have invested money in a device that has no useful purpose other than playing games?
It doesn't really do fingers.
Looks like I'll have to stick with sello taping two wiimotes to my hands and using that then.
Like Wolverine with Wiimotes.

Ran into this from the TVNZ webpage:
http://www.conceivablytech.com/1377/products/5-reasons-why-xbox-360-kinect-could-fail/
Limited body recognition
Tied to the camera capability is what appears to be very limited body recognition. According to IGN, Kinect’s sensor cannot recognize skeletal movements (Microsoft says 48 skeletal points, down to fingers, are tracked) while the gamer is sitting, which means that Kinect games will only work when you are standing up, even if you are trying to navigate through menus using just your hands. If you sit down, Kinect will only work with voice recognition. Imagine that playing a simple game while you actually sit on the couch will not work anymore.
I am hoping Microsoft were telling the truth here, even if it was tested 'under special conditions'.
Then again: I've already proven you can play Kinect games while seated in a CHAIR, even if the chair starts flying.
-
The hands generally work sitting down

The Kinect SDK will be available sometime this year. I'll be getting a Kinect when that's released, if not sooner.

-
Exciting. Might be worth buying one of those. I want to see if i can get it to do 3D mapping better than the cameras we have at work (which are pretty bad). Hopefully the SDK won't be windows only.
-
What exactly do you need to do 3D mapping on?
-
What exactly do you need to do 3D mapping on?
Just mapping of environments, and object detection. Its just for a mobile robot, that needs to move in unknown environments. You can use any two camera setup, but kinetic is good, because it can be used to play games on the xbox as well.
-
The IR on the kinect would work pretty well for object detection.
-
I got the Kinect yesterday. We got Dance Central because my gf wanted to play it.
Originally I didn't care much for Kinect Adventures, but there was no way to buy the Kinect without it. But after playing it i'm glad I got it, it's pretty fun, and i'm pretty impressed by it and how it tracks my body movements.
Unfortunately we can't play two player without rearranging all the future in the whole house.
I'm looking forward to Kinect SDK.
-
Is the Dance Central any good? Think it might be the next one I get for the girls....

Pro Tips
#1 what works for you as a gesture may not work for others.
#2 simple detection algorithms are best the more complex you try and be the more likely it is to fuck up.
#3 smooth/average your joint data (but not too much) this reduces alot of the noise you can get when using joints as pointers (menu navigation etc)
#4 in many cases translating your joint data coordinates to be based on the players forward facing vector improves gestures. (eg If I am standing slightly rotated to the left when I move my hand forward infront of my body it won't exactly be going towards the sensor/Z axis.
I'll download this tonight at home but not sure I'll do much with it over the weekend, I had enough troubles with kinect this week :p

Kinect voice commands coming to Skyrim
Anyone who's played The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has dreamed of actually shouting someone off of a cliff, right? Well, the Xbox version of the game will support more than 200 voice commands by the end of this month.
Bethesda plans to release a free title update that will allow gamers to enable Kinect support for Skyrim, thus enabling them to 'FUS RO DAH!' their in-game enemies by yelling at their TVs like a crazy person.

Star Wars Kinect - 3/10
Have you ever wanted be the one to wield a lightsaber, use the power of the force to crush your enemies, hurl missiles and thermal detonators back at your assailants, and pick up Star Ships like Yoda?
Well: With Star Wars Kinect you can now do that in a clunky, spastic, motion controlled collection of mini-games!
In fact: You can do it two players with a friend so it is two of you looking like arm waving retards.
How the controls work
Basically you control the lightsaber with your 'main' hand (you can switch your lightsaber to left or right handed) and your force powers with your off-hand. Drawing back your off-hand activates force push (needs to be charged) and stretching out your off-hand activates 'move object' (lift and throw enemies).
The lightsaber can be used to strike left, right, up, down OR you can perform a 'figure eight' to block incoming shots.
Unfortunately a 'figure eight' also equates to something resembling the Macarena. Sorry game: You lose points for this.
Other actions including: Jumping. Ducking. Leaning forward (to move forward) and dodging/moving left and right.
Why this game is turdtacular
The problem with this game is that it is not a very good game. Even without the motion controls: In absolutely no way, shape, or form could this game be considered 'good'. 'Mediocre' would be high praise.
Mass combats are performed with the barely functional jumpy, lightsabery, hack n slashy controls. But one-on-one combats consist of you blocking an enemy (you cannot attack, there is an 'attack timer' that you have to wait to fill up so you can attack) followed by a clash (which you must win with a motion control of some type) and then you attack an enemy within a time limit.
If the enemy does not die: Repeat the blocking > clashing > slashing. Yawnerrific.
It gets worse.
There are also jet-speeder sections which reminded me of the old 1983 Arcade Star Wars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_(1983_video_game)) except the controls for this were ten times worse and instead of a comfy chair to sit in, you stretch out your hands and squat like a jet packer powered by flatulence.
There are also Space Combat sequences, very similar to Rebel Assault (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Rebel_Assault) except Rebel Assault was occasionally a fun experience whereas this is not only NOT fun, but you can die within 10 seconds of starting a mission. Faster than the 'helpful' protocol droid can say 'look out behind us!'. These sections also boast the worst possible controls for a game with the possible exception of Marble Madness.
Is there anything good about this game?
Funnily enough: YES! From a game developer point of view, this is the worst possible use of the XBOX Kinect I can think of. It is underutilized, horribly paced, terribly written, and something which probably shouldnt exist. If you were to ever develop a game for XBOX Kinect and you are looking for something good to say about it on the box, you can put: "Beats Star Wars Kinect hands down!"

So what are the good games with this Xbox thingy? We got an Xbox Kinect with the new TV. Kinect adventures (River rapids at the moment) is good, 3YO and 5YO enjoy it. Just a bit short for it to pick up some of the low screen hand controls for some reason. The Disney kinect game that came with the Pack seemed pretty bad in the 5 minutes I played, don't think the kids will care for it.
Really want simple fun games for the kids. Anyone played the Kinect sports ones?
One day may get a FPS or TPS for it. Managed to get this far with out a console so may just use the PC for Gaming.
Can play a few of my Steam games on the HTPC with the Xbox controller, GPU is a bit weak thou.
-
Our kids (6 & 8) are loving the Kinnect Sports, would give that 2 thumbs up.
-
Kinect Sports (1 is best, 2 is ok) and Dance Central (1, 2 & 3) are awesome.
Those games were designed ground up for Kinect, as opposed to other games which just had Kinect tagged on. And it really shows.
Dance Central 2 allows two people to dance at a time (1 didn't)
-
Cheers Guys, Got Kinect sports 1 and my 5Yo son and I had a play this morning. He can't throw the javelin yet but kicked ass on the hurdles and enjoyed the bowling. Looks like it will be good. Might have to get Dance central 2. I'm sure the kids will love it. (An probably the wife as long as I don't find out)
Also got Farcry 2. $19 at DSE so I can have a token shooter

You misunderstand him.
He's saying move controllers are not a valid option for genital punishment because the makes us question our sexuality too much.
If not for the later, they could be regarded as pretty useful for genital punishment for hetrosexual men.
For women, and men of other sexual orientations, there would be no issue.
I for one am comfortable with my sexuality. I just dont use the move controller cause it sucks.
