Title: What are you or have you kickstarted/indiegogo'd?
Post by: Arseynimz on February 10, 2014, 03:19:03 pm
Thought I'd fire up a thread as it's always interesting seeing what people are backing in the crowdfunding area. Especially as the sites are so crowded with potential projects, it would be good to see what others are, or have backed whether on Indiegogo or Kickstarter, or some other site, or even independently.

To fire it off, my toys:

Smart Herb Garden (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mattiaslepp/smart-herb-garden-by-click-and-grow)
A cool little desk garden which operates fantastically. I'd definitely recommend it for retail purchase, and I can see this getting stronger as a product over time. I'm growing Basil, Thyme & Lemon Balm. I had no issues with MAF (surprisingly), and the unit was perfect when it arrived. My only criticisms would be that they promised other seeds with the kickstarter which weren't delivered, there is no current way to get more cartridges for the garden, and one of the features I wanted (smartphone app) is not yet available.

Titanium Keychain tool (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tactical/wtf-mini-titanium-keychain)
A small and easy purchase, this is just a titanium multi-tool. Was something I actually could see myself using, and lo and behold it's become very handy.

Fusion Plate (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/162266883/the-fusion-plate-a-camera-accessory)
A simple tripod mount with a loop connected for attaching your shoulder strap. This is a solidly made piece of gear with the only downside I still need to buy a ball head for my tripod as I'm using a video fluid head lol. I still use them for the shoulder strap I have though.

HOT Watch (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hotsmartwatch/hot-watch-complete-smart-watch-w-revolutionary-pri-0)
In the same vain as the Pebble watch, this a "smart" watch with some extra features. Has ended up having some extensive changes since I kickstarted, and will be a very interesting gadget once it arrives... In about 3 months. Which is only 4 months over it's touted arrival...

Legion Portable Battery (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/plxdevices/legion-the-battery-reinvented)
Just a standard portable battery for your gadget needs. This one has an ePaper readout to show various stats, and is also a giant 11,000 mAh for me. Supposed to arrive in the next month or so now Chinese New Year is over with.

What you guys rolled out with?

Totally into the herb garden. Thanks for the tip Arsey.

That will be my first ever kickstarter pledge. Call me a cynic.

Michron: Timelapse intervalometer (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/vivolabs/michron-timelapse-for-everyone)
Timelapse device, lots of features. Controlled via smartphone app and phone can be disconnected from device once set. Has not arrived yet, should do late March.

The Legion battery device looks pretty cool.

Shit that's pretty sweet - keen to hear how it goes dude.

The Smart Herb Garden I threw a question at the creator of the KS campaign for you guys to see when shit was going to be available for retail. The dude replied pretty quick and said that they'd be sending it live once they refined the design and the updates they wanted to make and maybe the retail version would be a newer version than the one we got.

In the meantime, here's a pic of mine next to my desk right now!

And

Civitas (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1584821767/civitas-plan-develop-and-manage-the-city-of-your-d) which cancelled it's kickstarter after getting secret investor funding then promptly  died (http://videogamesuncovered.com/what-happened-to-civitas-and-who-is-their-secret-backer) (which means the KS being cancelled probably saved me loosing some $$$)
Title: Re: What are you or have you kickstarted/indiegogo'd?

I've been tempted in the past, but it's hard to find stuff that's actually cool that actually interests you that you think might actually benefit you in some way (that you want) that you think will actually get funded and not end up being a bunch of cash down the drain.

I've found a couple of cool things but no spare cash and such. It's a far sounder investment to kickstart my keeping an abode for rent than it is to have a cool 3d printer filliment dispenser for the 3d printer I don't have, etc.

Or if someone tried to kickstart something like phoneblocks. I could see many a derphead throwing a fist of cash, but all it'd make me want to do is throw a fist, sans cash.

Maybe one day I'll have leisurely cash and run across something that intrigues me, I can see benefit in & think I'd actually use (more than once) if I had the option to purchase it. Oh, and was a sound investment rather than "LOL HAVE MONEY BECAUSE I LIKE YOUR IDEA"

Hence, funding tangible better than funding intangible. And I don't either. But that could change, maybe one day.

Eg. click and grow. That shit's cool, and I could see myself funding/buying one, if I owned a house, had spare cash and stable job/life, etc. But I have exactly zero of any of these, so yeh.

Great call Pyro - that's why I wanted to post this thread because those are the same reasons I look at Kickstarter & Indiegogo for stuff I'll actually use that are good ideas. Unfortunately, when you take this approach there is typically stuff all that you end up backing, but as per my OP, I had a couple of cool things because I wanted and have wanted for a long time a fresh herb garden of sorts. The WTF Titanium tool was a cheap useful tool that I could see myself using, and the same for the battery. The Hot Watch was a definite punt, but is also something I've wanted for a while, and it was my Christmas present to myself, which many end up being this year's present at the rate it's going.

So I agree with your post, and hope that peeps can share the things they roll out on so we can all jump on board, and consequently share stories etc.

On.... fuck. GETSOME crowdfunding thread. Like a filter for non-shit things folks of like mind deem worthy of a bit of investment.

You hurd it here first (lol getit? CROWD fund pun right there).

Get on board with shit that isn't shit that could be worth backing.

Okay, I went on a bit of a spastic run at Kickstarter and IndieGogo...

Tickle King Documentary (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dylanreeve/tickle-king-the-hunt-for-the-truth-in-competitive)
A story in it's own right, but a twisted journalistic adventure that I've been following from David Farrier. I'm more keen to see how it all evolves, so my backing of this is to assist Farrier to make it all happen.

Carbon Fibre Wallet (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1601821201/common-fibers-a-real-carbon-fiber-wallet)
Because I fucking can.

Blue Mountain State Movie (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/773106364/blue-mountain-state-the-movie)
A TV series I watched and enjoyed, so thought I'd jump on this movie bandwagon. It's become one of the most funded campaigns on KS as well, which is no mean feat.

Dig Down Dwarf - Dice Game (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1243534184/dig-down-dwarf-the-award-winning-strategic-dice-ga)
I occasionally look over the board games, and typically they're all rinse and repeat. This one appealed for it's differences, but also the creator is a seasoned KS campaigner, and is including all sorts of bonuses, some completely unadvertised as well. Will be a sweet little board game combined with a very good looking box and set.

Mirobot DIY robot for kids (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bjpirt/mirobot-the-diy-wifi-robot-for-children)
Pretty self explanatory, but it's the full kitset. The kids will be able to solder it, program it, and expand on it. I'm looking forward to this one for my eldest daughter as a birthday present.

Legion Meter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/plxdevices/legion-meter-charge-your-smartphone-92-faster)
Just another fast charge device for your smart phone (which all they do is drop the data port and re-route it to send charge to the phone), but this has a little e-paper readout. It's made by the same people who made the battery I bought (in OP).

La Fenice Induction Coffee Maker (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2106260358/la-fenice-worlds-first-induction-coffee-machine)
Other than being a fancy looking piece of kit made by Italians, it does some cool shit with coffee via an induction process. Also comes with a frother and lots of cool add ons. If it makes a few stretch goals, the dude is going to add all sorts of functionality, so I'm pretty excited about this one - by the time it arrives, it'll be an awesome Christmas present.

NIWA - smartphone controlled growing system (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/435284672/niwa-the-worlds-first-smartphone-controlled-growin)
A climate controlled growing system with smartphone controls. I've enjoyed the herb garden I bought, but the major drawback is the peat moss and seeds all have to go through MAF increasing the cost. This system will be all potted and planted by me, so makes for a more open option for me to grow peppers, or tomatoes or anything else!

Lunecase (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/concepter/lunecase-bring-the-back-of-your-iphone-to-life)
A little bit of a different case - has glowing shit on the back when a call or text or other comes through. This is more a curiosity purchase than anything, but given I'll soon have two bloody iPhones for work and personal, it will at least get some use ;)

Gokey - charger, cable etc. (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gokey-charger-cable-locator-memory-all-on-your-key-ring/x/7569707)
Pretty self explanatory - a few cool features in one keyring thing.

If I had an iPhone, I'd not buy the Lunecase purely based on that shitty, stereotypical demo vid. Holy crap what a bunch of marketing dribble.

Also, was that a kiwi as the marketing dude? I want to punch him in the throat for not only looking like a giant spastic douche, but for coming up with such a shitty demo vid.

Case seems cool though, if a little superfluous. I never put my cellphone face down on surfaces. Whole thing has kind of a vapourware feel to it, kind of scammy.

Ah now when I had an iphone I never cared what way I put it so it usually went face down, why? No notification light. Makes sense to have a case like this when there are no visual signs of notifications otherwise. Didn't watch the video though.

Legion meter is tempting

Lunecase looks cool, but iphone, no ty.

Induction coffee machine looks epic too, sent that to my rents

Niwa looks awesome, would be great for apartment life, will keep an eye on that

everything else, meh

I think this is happening a little too much with backing options because of Kickstarter's rules around what you can and can't offer as a backer reward. It's why product creators (as opposed to more artistic things like movies, books, or shows etc.) are more moving to Indiegogo - as well as the fact the money is taken then and there for Indiegogo where KS waits until the project is funded before charging you.

For the Niwa, I got the $249 Mini Early bird deal. The size is all I'll need to get some small plants running, and I'd also like it on my desk instead of taking up a whole fucking corner like the big one will. I'd have loved to get the Premium version, but unless I have some solid surety that the product will be mint, I'm more cautious. This as an example is what I did with the La Fenice - I took the $370 option because it looks legit, and these guys clearly know what they're doing.

If I had an iPhone, I'd not buy the Lunecase purely based on that shitty, stereotypical demo vid. Holy crap what a bunch of marketing dribble.

yeah, the marketing vid was average, but I want it for the features, as I do often have my phone face down in meetings and if I'm out when I put it on the table. Like I said before, more of an interest purchase for something different at a very cheap price than anything else.

The Website GoFundMe allows people to support individuals and groups for any reason big and small.

There are some surprising requests like saving a skatepark or getting a family to a funeral. There are also some really sad ones, like a little girl attacked by pit bulls whose family insurance company refuses to pay some of the medical costs (http://www.gofundme.com/8q8yww) or a terminally ill man who wants to visit the Rocky Mountains one last time (http://www.gofundme.com/helpthecaptain)

So I went and fucking did it again (I think I have a problem)...

Liquidoff - Water Repellent (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/196784169/liquidoff-the-magical-self-cleaning-water-repellin)
Just some repellent spray, but something I need, so fuck it, why not KS it...

HEXO+ - Autonomous Quadcopter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sqdr/hexo-your-autonomous-aerial-camera)
Quadcopter with gimbal that has follow technology in it for recording a subject. Primarily for sports or activities, but has manual flight mode also, so will work for me quite nicely with the videography & photography and the likes.

Earin - Tiny earbuds (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1629248706/earin-the-worlds-smallest-wireless-earbuds)
I really just like the concept around these, and the simplicity of tiny earbuds. The technology and quality is also of interest, so I'll give them a back on that front.

SmartQuad - 4 port charger (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/853175871/smartquad-4-port-96-amps-48w-travel-usb-charger)
Simple 4 port charger for all your devices, and compatibility for multiple 2.1A devices as well which I need for multiple iPads and other batteries.

NINJA Footwear (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/theutlab/the-ninja-impossibly-light-microfiber-footwear)
Microfiber shoes. Why not?

Backed 19 KS to date, and 1 Indiegogo.

Of those, I've received 4 of them... Christmas gonna be gooooood!

Why micro hydro generation?

Why not solar power? Or wind?

Not everybody has a river running past their mini golf course.

Omg a tv inside a water wheel sounds like a plan!!

Space,  solar yes.  But would only pay off if it is light enough. Wind no.
Both solar and wind would require consents.
The hydro plan is going to be quite different to most.
Google powerspout.

There would be 2 tanks of water. Using pumps to push it. Then itl be gravity fed to take it through rh the generators

And it's time for the weekly "RII SHITS ON YOUR DREAMS" post in this thread.

Liquid Off - "Self cleaning" is a lie. Self cleaning suggests that it cleans itself, it doesn't, it just prevents dirt from adhering to whatever surface the solution is applied to.

Ninja Trainer - They aren't trainers you dumbass dildos, they're hipster slippers.

Love you, Nimmo, put things in my butthole.

I still don't get it. It's limited by needing a water source.

Solar can of course feed into a battery, or back into the grid, and be used again when light levels are low.

What do you mean by consent? I'm pretty sure solar panels don't required consent.

Wait, so you're going to pump water into a top tank, then let it flow through a powerspout into the second tank, where the water is then pumped back into the top tank and the process is repeated?
Title: Re: What are you or have you kickstarted/indiegogo'd?

Could look into solar. Some councils require consent due to eye sore situations.

On the water source thing. It will be reticulated.  Plus rain water off the roof to replenish. And if required would get it from town supply.

Bounty,  pretty much but theres 2 big tanks between the bottom andthe top

Bounty,  pretty much but theres 2 big tanks between the bottom andthe top

Based on what you've told me, and how I've interpreted it; what you've told me is that you essentially want to make a perpetual motion machine. Which is impossible.

If it takes 300W of energy to pump some volume of water into the top tank, then when the water is released and it flows through the generator (the powerspout) it will generate 300W minus a little bit due to resistances.

Resistances are things like: the turbulent flow of the water, the internal friction of the water, the friction of the water on the walls of the pipes and generator, the resistance of the wires in your generator (I think this would be the largest contributor), the friction of the bearings in the pump, plus a few more that I can't think of.

So you require 300W to pump the water up high and you get say 290W out of the generator....you're short by 10W.

No matter what you do that 10W is gone, it's gone into heat and it's now part of the universe. So you've got to find 10W from somewhere just to break even! you haven't even turned on a light yet!

Just to clarify, this is my understanding of what you have described, I may have misunderstood. All the numbers are arbitrary and for explanation only.

Thanks bounty.
I forgot to mention il be running more than one unit. Im thinking about a series of 4units times 3 sections.  What would your maths equal then?

I appreciate this feedback. Thx

Thanks bounty.
I forgot to mention il be running more than one unit. Im thinking about a series of 4units times 3 sections.  What would your maths equal then?

I appreciate this feedback. Thx

It doesn't matter how many sections you have, if it takes 300W to lift a certain amount of water into the top tank in one go, then for three stages it will take 100 + 100 + 100 = 300W.

So if I have two of my above system, then I have twice the loss, thus would need to find 20W instead of 10W.

If I have 7 systems, then it's 70W, if I have 100, then it's 1000W.

You may be able to make some slight improvements but what you're proposing is a nearly 400 year old idea that has been attempted many times. The principle of what you're proposing has been well documented and every single time the conclusion has been the same. Based on our current understanding of physics, perpetual motion is impossible.

:( the youtube doesn't work for me

I once had a similar meeting where the accountant wanted me to inspect the inside of a piece of lead (using destructive methods). I tried many things but the lead would just smear.

He suggested I change the colour of the compound I was mounting the lead in.

Same guy also fast tracked three changes to an experiment, so now I had three unknown parameters instead of one.

He also purchased an adjustable spanner when a set of spanners was requested.

Back on track though!

That HEXO+ and the other one (dogquad or something) looks like a pretty cool guy! If it could do 280kph I'd buy it in a second.

Lol that sum is for the entire thing. Not just the hydro generation. Ive worked with fountains and water flows so I would of thought the system like powerspout would work.
There are other options. Could dump the whole eco thing and use the grid.

Its more thought out than you would assume.  ;)

I put the info on gofund to get it out there. Still yet to get detailed. ..

There would be 2 tanks of water. Using pumps to push it. Then itl be gravity fed to take it through rh the generators

To add a bit more explanation to what bounty has said, just so it doesn't sound so easy...

Most, if not all, motors have high starting current (can be up to 6x full load current) as they rev up to speed, so you'd be wasting a lot of power by either starting / stopping the pump, or by running it constantly.

A 300W motor would use 1.25 - 1.3 amps, assuming it's single phase, unless you plan to only install in 3 phase houses, which a lot of people aren't. While that motor starts up it will be drawing 1800W. You could get around this by using a Variable Speed Drive but I think by that point you're just pissing into the wind.

Now that's only for a few seconds that it would be drawing that high, then it would run at 300W input power.

Maybe become a bio-engineer (is that a thing?) and create a bacteria that converts carbon dioxide/minoxide/what ever is in 'that ol' o-zone' ... into electricity. I know there is a bacteria already that converts SOMETHING into electricity, and I saw in the science thread a year or two ago, that there is a bacteria that creates peizoelectricity when you press it, and they were thinking of coating phone touch screens in it.

Novi Security (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/274168493/novi-security)
Cool little home security come smoke alarm dealio. I'm impressed, and as a renter this works for me, as well as having peace of mind for my stuff and the kids.

Fine Tip "Dart" Stylus (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/michaelmajid/next-generation-stylus-for-ipad-the-dart-with-2mm)
I use a stylus for my iPad, and this conquers one of the major problems I have when using it, so was a naturally immediate purchase.

XenoShyft Onslaught (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/coolminiornot/xenoshyft-onslaught)
Board game/card game. Looks pretty cool, and the art work is phenomenal.

I am now up to a lifetime backing of 23 KS projects and 1 Indiegogo. I have received 4 of those backed items, and am scheduled to receive the rest as follows:
July 2014 - 3
August 2014 - 3
September 2014 - 3
October 2014 - 3
November 2014 - 2
December 2014 - 1
January 2015 - 2
...
May 2015 - 2

I'm also keeping a note of the following two:
Moment Smartwatch (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1977264838/moment-smartwatch-worlds-first-wrap-around-smart-w?ref=users)
I've already got a smartwatch on the way, but the concept of this intrigued me, and interests me. Not sure I want it, but will keep an eye on it just in case ;)

Metal Polyhedral Dice (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/slykly/precision-polyhedral-dice-with-metal-dice-vaults?ref=users)

Arduino Discovery Kit (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/arduinoclassroomkit/learn-electronics-and-programming-duinokit-essenti)
Pretty neat little unit for learning Arduino and general electronics and programming.

BloomSky Weather Station (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/907431954/bloomsky-snapshot-of-your-weather)
Got two of these - one for me and one for my Dad. I like the idea, and given the farm, Dad takes quite an interest in the weather, so this will be pretty funky for both of us to have and access.

Hex+ Hexacopter with Gimbal (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sqdr/hexo-your-autonomous-aerial-camera)

Yeah, you're right there - this is also one of the reasons I'm less inclined to Indiegogo, because they take your money instantly (albeit they hold it in trust) - I just feel they're less rigorous around their prrojects. Especially so, when little kids can put up an Indiegogo campaign to buy a computer for "editing videos"...

Yea the following tech is what makes it quite exciting. They have already stated it doesn't do obstacle avoidance, but I would love to see how well it could track in a busy environment. I guess they will use some sort of position based tracking in combination with their object tracking algorithm, but will be interesting to see the results.

I thought that the idea is you can't cancel. Hence the term 'pledge' or whatever. Or maybe you can, _before_ the campaign ends. That would make sense.
But if the _campaign_ was a success, then your money is gone. It's not absolutely nothing at all to do with when the product is released (if ever).
That's kinda half the point of this thread.

Jesus fuck, what a dumb fucking idea.

HURR HURRR METAL WATCH. When you sweat, that shit is going to rash like a whore on a free night. It's going to wear and rip away at your sleeve if you work at a desk.

OH, I'M GOING TO LOOK AT MY FUCKING WRIST TO SEE WHAT THE FUCKING GOD DAMN TIME IS, OH LOOK, MY WATCH HAS SLIPPED AND FUCKING ROTATED, GIVE ME A SECOND TO RE-ADJUST THIS PUSSY HIPSTER FUCKING THING. IT'S A SHAME IT DOESN'T STAY PUT ON THE COUNT OF IT HAVING NO FUCKING STRAP.

Introduction the thinnest watch ever. At 5 nanometres thick, the strap actually appears transparent to the naked eye. It uses an Ink display to show a time* in digital format.

In a Category of Its Own
Unless there is already a category of watches which are worn on a persons arm, but I'm not aware of one.
It contains toxic chemicals and is probably not too good for your skin.

Powered by a Thinergy - what the hell is that?
The Thinergy process converts the motion of your wrist into electric energy which is probably used to power the watch. A quick morning wank and you should be set for the day.

Assembled in New Zealand
Or where ever really.

* It shows a time, not the time.

Not even a scam. It does exactly what it said it will.
It's just a fucking shit idea with poor development.

This is what INVESTMENT is all about. Gambles. Only with the idiocy of crowds... well you get idiocy.
As said before in this thread, this is a convenient way for someone to bypass proof of concept, investment funding (which involves prooving viability to an experienced outside party, substantial & proven progress reports, etc.) It's not a scam until they run off with the money never to be seen or heard of again, and it turns out all the investment propaganda was all falsified.
