Title: Oil Grades
Post by: Apostrophe Spacemonkey on March 01, 2013, 08:05:53 am
At it's last service, my car got filled up with 10W30 grade oil.

I have half a container of 15W40 in my garage.

Is it ok to top up my car with this?

Provided your car isn't a highly strung, high performance race car with headlights, then it'll be fine.

How long till next service? has it burned much? how old is it?

It's 2000, next service will be in June.

It doesn't burn much oil, it may not even need a top up, I was just wondering.

It does have headlights, is this relevant?

it probably wont do any harm, but it would be better to go out and spent like the 10 or 15 dollars a litre of oil will cost you

explanation of oil follows:

the W simply denotes thats the oil is a winter grade oil, and therefore suitable for NZ
the numbers are viscosity ratings measured in times thicker that water
the lower number is the hot rating, the high number is the cold rating

so 10W30 is thirty times thicker than water when cold, and ten times thicker when hot
15W40 is 40 times thicker when cold and 15 times thicker when hot

your friendly GetSome mechanic apprentice suggests only using the recommended oil for the engine, though you *most likely* wont do any harm by not

It's summer, you want the 15w40 if you live up north.

I'm rolling 20w50 at the moment in my older car.

Oh, buy a haines manual for your car if you really care.

You will need a lubricant that doesn't taint your headlight fluid....I happen to have 4L it's only $30 a litre which is a steal, considering most pay $100 a litre, betcha glad your car doesn't run on this stuff huh?!?

Make sure you do it all the way to the cap.
Cars love oil, gotta make sure it's full.

Should be fine, wouldn't mix a sythetic with a mineral oil is the only thing.
