Technology & Hardware / WoT NA lag
« on: July 22, 2013, 10:01:02 am »
When it happens it's usually for around an hour, seems to be around mid evening usually, but have seen it randomly all times.

It's packet loss, ping to the na west is normally 130~160 in game but during this time the connection light flashes green and red for the whole round and the ping jumps up around 100ms (250~350). It's not so much the ping that's the problem but the packet loss as it rubber bands, jerks, and lags.

Running tracert between a good time and a bad time shows crazy bad packet loss, and yet, my friend on slingshot is unaffected.

So seems that every now and then since 8.6 I get a really rough patch of packet loss and lag spikes.

My friend I play with doesn't seem to suffer at all, he's on slingshot, so is possibly something with the cable routing...

Who should I raise this with now Vodafone has taken over? Would be nice if there was someone with xp that I could email as i'm not rining up their terribad CSRs.

General Chat / Steam Summer Sale
« on: July 17, 2013, 02:37:44 pm »
Dishonored is a good game at a cheap price. I bought that in the easter sale and really liked it.

Just bought bioshock infinite in this sale and have played through it a bit but I have to say I think I like dishonored slightly better, the linear gameplay in bioshock tends towards just steamrolling it.

Kind of just also felt the need to play the games that I bought in sales but never gave a good run, have to finish torchlight 2 and actually play a round of tropico 4.

Transfer back to US servers!

They now have a West Coast server and my pings to that on vodafone cable are around 150-170ms now, where as the original east coast server is still ~250ms.

Had one from the Lower Hutt franchise...was boring, lacking in delicious flavours, and just felt like the overall taste wasn't thought through (shouldn't have the slaw imo).

I hate that in NZ the chicken and the chips are not cooked as well as in the US, is too god dam soggy, I actually ask to get crispy overcooked chips, but the servers have the most blank and vague reaction I just shrug.

Get Some Game Servers / Too many SteamsUpdateNews

I too added the steam user to ignore a long time ago and it never worked, but today I click the 'what's new' button and am not spammed for a change...is it true, is it finally gone?

E: no, it's not true, there's just only 1 steam update for a change

Technology & Hardware / Steam, why you fail me now after 8 years ?!
« on: June 18, 2013, 03:08:46 pm »
I should've piped up earlier. I used to have a weird issue where steam would fail to update then get corrupt and spit the dummy with the only way to fix it being to run windows in safe mode with networking.

Turned out to be some weird windows background process where deleting a file would not actually delete the file immediately and this was breaking steam. I found the windows fix for this somewhere after googling and that resolved the steam issues.

I would suggest that should this reoccur, run in safe mode and if it works then it's the same issue and you should fix the windows bug.

Battlefield / Battlefield 4 Officially Confirmed
« on: June 05, 2013, 12:52:30 pm »
What you detail there is not entirely what I meant; A sniper class should have a sniper rifle and be allowed to set that up how they like scope/attachment wise, that's cool, but letting sniper class switch to an SMG/shotgun/assault-rifle is what I would consider blurring. Is what killed TF2 for me, was better when classes were clearly defined and not awash with different weapons.

Post Karkand killed bf3 for me and probably will not bother with bf4.

I'm in the 1942 camp. I preferred roles being considerably more separate, no assault snipers for example, weaknesses don't get blurred through CoD like unlocks. The older generation such as DoD was just more fun for me.

I should have chimed in yesterday.

Leave the windows home group and use advanced folder sharing using usernames/passwords.
Share folder.
Add everyone to the security setting.

Done.

Technology & Hardware / Programming Question?
« on: May 16, 2013, 02:38:45 pm »
You guys missed my point about LUA. It was not about syntax but about semantics. Perhaps I should've mentioned basic, pascal, python, or any myriad of simple to learn and use languages.

Actually, something like ruby (on rails) would be handy with it's online interpreter training thingy.

EDIT: Here's the link http://railsforzombies.org/

Technology & Hardware / Programming Question?
« on: May 15, 2013, 01:27:59 pm »
I would recommend that if you really want to know the basics you should start by learning the basic semantics of programming http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantics_%28computer_science%29

Once you get that you should progress to playing around with a basic language such as lua which is used in minecraft http://www.lua.org/docs.html

Once you understand the basic semantics of programming, all languages are inherently easier to understand, much like learning a foreign language makes learning more easier.

I would recommend installing an IDE to help develop, such as eclipse http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/

Got dishonoured, think seeing the optional "season pass" for $30 put me off infinite.

I like Bethesda, I think i'll enjoy dishonoured and it's open style.
