Travellers leaving and coming to New Zealand will be forced to pay $22 for a return international trip under the plan.

Auckland Airport said today that the new tax could impact New Zealand's competitiveness as a tourist destination, especially for those travellers who are price sensitive.

Really?

Someone who is already spending hundreds of dollars to travel here, will be put off by an extra 22 bucks?

I doubt it.

Discuss the exciting budget here.

yeah $22 - who gives a flying fuck

in less than a year it will be almost certainly incorporated into your fare, so you won't even need to worry about it

The extra fees could mean a slippery slope in travelling taxes once the government finds out we're so accepting of it.

Honestly, fuck National. Every single bill amendment or introduction recently has been them whining about the ramifications that it'll have on an international scale rather than worrying about how something affects us here, directly.

I don't understand.

Pretty much everything in this budget affects us here, directly. For better and worse.

I'm not referencing the budget specifically.

A couple of examples:

The proposed housing tax - John Key's and National's main complaint in response to it is "it will put off international buyers".
The Auckland Airport appear to be complaining about a tax because international travellers will be butthurt.

I've not seen anything from our current government that seems to be in protection of or in response to our populace. Instead it's all about our marketability to the international buyer.

Who we rely on for most of economy (yah know, being an export/tourist economy) so kissing ass to those that pay your bills doesn't seem like a silly idea...
