General Chat / Verdun - WW1 - FPS (on Steam)
« on: May 08, 2015, 03:39:40 pm »
A lovely review....

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If we look at Verdun in the standards of modern gaming, it fails miserably.

Compared to triple A games and large developers, Verdun and it's developers fails in almost every aspect of game making.

No first day DLC save final updates.
No microtransactions.
No "pay to win" mentality.
No unrealistic twitch shooting.
No dodgy business practices.
No massive failures on day one.
No insane advantage for high level gamers.
No false advertising.

By today's standards, verdun would fail on the table of EA, Bethesda, CA, SEGA, Nintendo, and just about every single gaming company that is larger than, say, CD Projekt Red.

These failures, however, make this game the best FPS on the market as of now.

These indie developers have crafted the most satisfying experience I have had in a first person shooter in a long damned time.

The game is perfectly digestable, the upgrades system is easy to get, the weapons are balanced and look and handle fantastically...

The list of amazing acheivements this game has accomplished could go on for pages of writing.

Verdun created it's own version of FPS gameplay, taking us to an era most companies find dull and drab. The trench warfare turn based attack gameplay is insane, as you see first hand the horrors of the First World War, which, by the way, is now 100 years past.

I bought this game in eraly access and was satisfied with it. Now I can't get enough of it!

I have been fed up with large companies coming out with garbage and selling DLC every five minutes. Verdun's updates and new squards are being released free of charge over the next while, so this game will become even better and more varied than it is now.

Verdun is one of a special kind of game, one that requires teamwork to dominate the map. While battlefield has become zany and unrealistic, Verdun forces you to play as a team, and unlike in battlefield, if you fail to do so, you will die again, and again, and again.

I cannot recommend this game more to anyone. The learning curb is massive, but you have so many classes to play as that are open to even the newest players.

Honestly there is something satisfying about having to use bolt action rifles in a trench that is captivating in and of itself. It is insanly addicitive and the squad based gameplay is incredible.

Verdun is by far the best FPS I have ever played as I have put in so many hours of my life into it (roughly 10 hours alone in hte last few weeks).

I cannot recommend this game any more.

SO GO BUY IT.

And as for some advice, keep your head down.
This isn't Call of Duty.

5C: for 'Cheap' & PlastiC

"It has an incredible all new design, one that's more fun, more colorful  than any iPhone we've made yet," said Phil Schiller, Apple's senior  vice president for marketing. In a video, Apple design guru Jonny Ive  described the 5C as "beautifully, unapologetically plastic."

The phone will sell for as little as $99, for a 16GB version, and $199  for one with 32GB of storage (each with a two-year mobile contract). In a  departure, Apple will also be making its own cases for the 5C, selling  them in a variety of colors for $29.

5S: for 'Suckers'

The 5S features a handful of performance upgrades, including what Apple calls a dramatic increase in processing speed.

 It will have the first  64-bit chip in a smartphone -- Apple's A7 -- which Schiller said has  tested at up to twice as fast as the iPhone 5's processor. It also will  have a new feature, a motion co-processor, that will let the phone be  used as a fitness tracker along the lines of a FitBit.

 Schiller said battery  life will be "the same or better" than the iPhone 5 and its camera will  have 15% more active sensor space, improved white balance and  auto-focus, and a new flash.
 Also, its camera will, for the first time on iPhone, allow video in slow motion.

 Arguably the most  dramatic new feature on the phone, though, is Touch ID, a fingerprint  scanner for added security. Users will be able to log into their phone  via the home button and make purchases from iTunes using their  fingerprint as a password of sorts.

 The iPhone 5S will sell for $199 for a 16GB version, $299 for a 32GB model and $399 for the top-end 64GB phone.

 Pre-orders for the  iPhone 5C starts on September 13. Both versions are on sale starting  September 20. Cook also announced the newest version of Apple's mobile  operating system, iOS 7, will be released to the public on September 18.

---------------------

Also, interesting to see that it looks like they have or will discontinue the old 5 handset, rather than discounting it as they have done in previous years. I was reading the 5C was cheaper to make than the 5, so having an old (more expensive to produce) 5 at same price would have buggered them.

Amazing what a bit of consumer backlash can bring...

http://news.xbox.com/2013/05/qa

Q:    Does Xbox One require an “always on” Internet connection?
A:    No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does  require a connection to the Internet. We’re designing Xbox One to be  your all-in-one entertainment system that is connected to the cloud and  always ready. We are also designing it so you can play games and watch  Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection.

Q:    How do consumers benefit by being connected to the cloud?
A:    The cloud makes every experience better and more accessible.  Because Xbox One is powered by the cloud:

  • Your games have more power available to create new gameplay, persistent worlds, and deeper experiences.
  • Your system and games can update automatically, so you shouldn’t have to wait for downloads or updates.
  • Your games and entertainment are stored and saved in the cloud, so you can access them anytime, from any Xbox One.*
  • Start a game, movie, or TV show on one console and finish exactly where you left off on another.
  • You can play multiplayer games  with your friends, stream movies or TV shows right away, and enjoy the  community and social features of Xbox Live.
  • Xbox One can recognize you, log you in and tailor your home screen just for you.

You can discover what your friends are playing, watching and listening to if they choose to share.
These are just a few examples of how customers benefit from our platform  being connected to the Internet. It brings the future of TV and games  to our consumers—and it’s designed for today and the decade ahead.

* Subject to content geographical restrictions.

Q:    When will Xbox One launch and in what markets?
A:    Xbox One will launch in markets around the world later this year. We’ll have more to share later.

Q:    Will Xbox One allow players to trade in, purchase and play pre-owned games?
A:    We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games. We’ll have more details to share later.

Q:    Will my current Xbox Live Gold membership work with Xbox One or will I have to buy a new one?
A:    You do not need to buy a new Xbox Live Gold membership. Your current membership will work on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

General Chat / Pork & Prawn meatballs in Penang Curry sauce
« on: June 10, 2013, 09:09:40 am »
Ok, sort of making this one up as I go along. Did a trial run of it last night, curry party this Saturday.

The Balls:
* 500g Ground Pork
* 250g Chopped Raw Prawns
* 4 Green Chiili - chopped finely
* 2 teaspoon Fish Sauce
* 2 teaspoon chopped Garlic
* Salt & Pepper
* 2 teaspoon Ground Roasted Rice (dry roast rice in a frypan till brown, cool & grind)
* 1/4 cup Bread Crumbs

Mix all of the above in a bowl, make in to small balls (wet hands helps), put to one side (chiller) and move on to the making the sauce. I found letting the balls semi-freeze makes them easier to handle when cooking them, less likely to break up.

Mixed:

Balled:

The Sauce:
* 4 tablespoons Penang Curry paste
* Large Onion cut in to 1/8's length ways (leave big chucks)
* 1 x Shallot - cut in to fine rings
* Coriander Root - 4 plants from base of leaves to root, finely chopped (keep leaves for garnishing afterwards)
* 1 tablespoon Ginger (fresh - chopped)
* 1 tablespoon Garlic
* 2 tablespoons Oil (prefer peanut or canola)

Heat Oil, then fry off the spice mix, prepare for nostrils to be assaulted.

Stir fry in Frypan:

After frying up for 3 mins, add 1 x Tin of Chopped tomatoes and 2 cups of Chicken stock, simmer till the onions are almost transulecent:

After 15 mins, check the taste ! If it's very salty (chicken stock is) add in 2 tablespoons of Palm Sugar (Jaggery) or brown sugar (or white).

Once you feel it is balanced, then add in the Pork & Prawn balls - poach in the liquid for about 15/20 mins till cooked.

With about 5 mins to go, add in cup of long beans & 1/2 cup of peanuts - stir in and then slowly add 1/2 tin of Coconut Cream, mix thoroughly, let it heat back up and once ready - garnish with your left over Coriander. Serve & Enjoy !

      Weta Workshop plans to tackle another well-loved tale - re-inventing the Thunderbirds television series.

          One of the UK's biggest production companies, ITV Studios, is  pairing with Weta and New Zealand-based Pukeko Pictures to make  Thunderbirds are Go!.   The show is set to air in 2015, 50 years after the original series launched.

          The 26-part re-incarnation of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's iconic  puppetry series featuring the Tracy family and Lady Penelope will use  both CGI animation and live-action model sets, Weta Workshop announced.   Weta Workshop and Pukeko Pictures founder Sir Richard Taylor said  the original series was "hugely influential" on him as a child, and  therefore he was thrilled to have the opportunity to work on the  children's show.

          "I...look forward to designing and creating an inspirational world  that will engage the imagination of a whole new generation as it did for  us nearly half a century ago."
          Pukeko Pictures was founded in 2008 by Sir Richard Taylor, Tania  Rodger and Martin Baynton, and produced animated children's shows Jane  and the Dragon and the Wotwots.

General Chat / GroundHog Day
« on: February 02, 2008, 08:12:18 am »
is today...

Groundhog Day or Groundhog's Day is a holiday celebrated in New York and Pennsylvania on February 2. In weather lore, if a groundhog, also known as a woodchuck, marmot or ground squirrel, emerges from its burrow on this day and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end. If the groundhog sees its shadow, it will return into its burrow, and the winter will continue for 6 more weeks.
