Technology & Hardware / A bit of advice on a potential upgrade
« on: January 03, 2015, 11:30:34 pm »
I've just got myself a 144Hz monitor and now I need to beef up my GFX and probably my memory.
Currently Ive got:
Mobo: GA-Z68XP-UD4
CPU i5 2500k 3.3Ghz
Gfx: ATI 6950 2Gb
RAM: 8Gb DD3 1600Mhz
SSD: Samsung 840 Evo 250GB
OS: Win 7 Pro
Just bought a AOC G2460PQU 144HZ 24" monitor

Upon checking the specs for my mobo on gigabytes website it is compatible with up to 2133Mhz, so I take it it would be best to get as fast as I'm able to? If so was checking pricespy and saw these two as popular choices:

In terms of graphics card upgrade, what sort of card will push my fps up to where it needs to be? and what kind of fps should I be looking to get to? I currently get 40fps in BF4 on high settings and 60fps on low. Is it my system RAM, video RAM or both that is holding me back?

As you can see I did soooo much research spending my Christmas money buying a new monitor. Though first impressions it looks pretty nice.

Technology & Hardware / New Internet setup
« on: October 08, 2014, 06:06:56 pm »
Hey guys I just bought my first house and I'm needing to get set up with internet. Starting from scratch, got no router or anything yet. Checked and there is no fibre anywhere near my house so will be looking for a regular internet connection. I'm mostly going to be gaming and streaming tv as I've just bought myself a smart TV, so would probably need a high data cap or unlimited.

Who in chch is proving good speeds and I'm not going to be paying through the nose for it, as I'm pretty poor at the moment.

Advice is appreciated, just got possession the other day and kinda overlooked this until now.

Technology & Hardware / Router/internet help
« on: April 09, 2014, 03:44:53 pm »
Hey guys, my internet keeps disconnecting every now and then on my router, sometimes I will be connected for as little as a few seconds before it disconnects other time it can be 40+ hours, but it is very hard to predict. It seems to lose connection with phone calls or faxes but not always, like when the phone rings after a few seconds the internet goes down, but not always.
We never used to have this problem the first 7 years in our house(inc after the earthquake, I'm in chch) when we were using our old D-link router that came with our internet plan when we first signed up, we upgraded to a NETGEAR DGN3500 about 18 months ago and the problems started about 6 months ago I think. I have double checked the settings in the router and they are correct.

I'm not sure what to do, is it the phone lines? is it the router? is it a filter?(I have swapped these around with no change). Not really sure who to ask or what tests I can do. I tried seeing if my router keeps a log or something but it does not.

It is quite annoying but I don't want to go out and buy a new router and then still have the same problem.

any advice on how to work out whats up?

Technology & Hardware / Monitor upgrade
« on: February 26, 2014, 12:47:50 pm »
I've been thinking about upgrading my monitor for a while, I currently have a Samsung SyncMaster P2350 and it's not too bad but it annoys me that the viewing angle is not great. It also has those shitty touch sensitive buttons.
Mightyape has a sale on their ASUS monitors today:
http://www.mightyape.co.nz/daily-deals/slot/15350

I have $40 in account credit there so it would be handy to use that up, but I'd shop somewhere else.
I got a budget of $400 I might push it a bit further if the quality was significantly better, and on the other hand if one of the 200-300 monitors does a good job having some money left over would be good too.

Mainly used for gaming and watching stuff, I could fit a 27" screen on my desk but as I sit about 70cm-1m away from my current monitor so they may be too big?, but would be great for watching stuff from the couch about 5m away.

Opinions?

I don't know too much about monitors so I'm here asking advice.

Buy, Sell Or Trade / HD5750, how much is it worth?
« on: April 01, 2013, 02:06:52 pm »
I have a powercolor Radeon HD5750 512MB card still in its box, which I used for a few months last year as a temporary replacement when my old card had problems, I just found it again in my cupboard. So whats it worth? I see a some on tardme around $70-$100($100 seems a bit high?).

If anyone is interested I'll take offers through here otherwise I'll list it on tardme.

Playstation plus 30 day trial
I have a code and I am giving it away. I have no need of it.

Also: " Please note that 30-day trials can not be stacked (i.e. you can not redeem one if you already have an active PlayStation Plus subscription)."
