What do you guys think?
Seems to be a step in the right direction from windows 8, personally.
Anyone going for the free upgrade? Excited to try it? Too scared? Tried the demo and now your computer is translating all documents to Swahili, making your keyboard all sticky and upsetting the pH balance in your pool?
I want to know what I'm about to walk into here.
-
I'm running the preview on the HTPC is it's been ok so far.
The difference is I actually think Windows 8.1 is great. So I'm actually annoyed at a few things they have changed in windows 10, i.e like the removal of me lucky charms bar.
Like windows 8, it's still really fast.
New browser (Edge/Spartan) - looks nice, haven't used it enough to make a decision on whether it's better than ie
New start menu - I stick with the full screen start menu, because it looks better on a TV, but a think the new start menu will be a welcome change for a lot of people.
I haven't been able to get Cortana working correctly, but maybe that's cause it's not supported in NZ yet.
-
Running Fast Track on my laptop, pretty happy with it.
-
I'd be careful about upgrading immediately.
If you're not keen to run into a few unpolished things, and more than likely, bugs; wait a few months before doing the upgrade.
I will be upgrading my rMBP immediately, it's running the Fast Ring builds atm. Will wait a few weeks to upgrade my main PC.
-
I think windows would be pretty polished. The pre-release has been available for release since the start of this year.
-
What's the criteria for getting a free upgrade?
I have Windows 7 that I purchased close on 3-4 years ago.

Own Windows 7, 8, or 8.x (not enterprise/VLK) and upgrade within 12 months of release is what we think, but there is still some confusion around this. MS are being clear as mud.

fixt. I don't think there's a stipulation on ownership.
Will see what happens to pirates when it upgrades though.

tl;dr, yes they can upgrade, but still "not genuine" and reduced functionality as per current versions.

Any system with Windows 7 or 8 installed.
If your windows is up to date. You should have a windows icon in your system tray allowing you to reserve the upgrade.

Try pressing the power button located on the front of the box, some people incorrectly call this box the hard drive, but it's actually called the CPU.

My condolences.

Same. But windows 10 does look just as nice, and I don't think i ever figured out a good way to utilize metro or charms, so won't be too sad to see them go.
-
I built a high-end gaming PC so I'd upgrade to Windows 10 just to have DirectX 12 for future games.

If you don’t see the Get Windows 10 app (the small Windows icon in your system tray), it might be because:
Your device isn’t up-to-date with at least Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update
Windows Update is turned off or is not set to received updates automatically
You’ve blocked or uninstalled the necessary Windows Update functionality.
Your device is not running genuine Windows
Your device is running Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, or Windows RT/RT 8.1, which are excluded from this reservation offer.
Your device is managed as part of a school or business network. (Check with your IT administrator.)
PCs that we determine cannot run Windows 10 will not see the Get Windows 10 app before July 29th. After July 29th, we’ll enable the icon in the system tray. This is to help ensure that you can easily check your PC’s compatibility if you choose.
Turns out the offer is available up until AROUND July 30th next year (I don't know if that is the exact date, It's available for a year.
The offer, that is. If you accept the offer, you have windows 10 5eva.

Unless your machine is a pacemaker, then they're one and the same.

That applies to OEM versions, but I can transfer the full retail version of Win 10 to a new PC when this one gets old and crusty.
-
For those (like me) with a preview build installed. MS have said you will be able to upgrade to the release version from the preview, without having to go back to 7 or 8 first.
-
Been running the preview builds on my HTPC, the latest one is looking really nice.
Still geared towards a tabletly interface, I guess their real market is going to be all these new convertible hybrid laptops, which makes sense. (I certainly wouldn't be interested is a standard laptop when I could get one which can be converted to a tablet instead)
-
If any of you have been running the tech preview version of windows 10 i would suggest you check for updates, as Thresh hold version aka RTM has been released to those on the fast lane for updates.
-
Some interesting features for gaming with Win10, inbuilt Game DVR which works for any game.

How I imagine the servers tomorrow...
-
I hope they release it to MSDN nice and early.
Been keeping an eye on it.
-
I'm pretty sure the release starts tomorrow and take all week for most copies to get distributed, just to ease the pressure.
I'm not sure about MSDM though.
-
My 'free' icon showed up last week. Will be upgrading from Win 7 to Win 8.
Anyone know how re-installs work? Will they make available an ISO so I can turn it into a bootable disc/USB?
-
I'm just guessing just like another windows update...
I hope we can chose what partition to run it on, I have win 8 on two hard drives in my computer so I can update one and keep the other one.
-
I have installed it already, but it won't activate until tomorrow
-
Pre-Release?
-
Volume licensing... Now only 27082 machines to upgrade.

once you do an upgrade to 10 your key will be bound to you hardware id / ms login account.
then you can do a clean install the iso will be available and you can then use something like rufus to create a gpt uefi boot usb.
also OEMS are being sent Windows 10 on usb sticks :)

Who are you doing the licensing for?

How I imagine the servers tomorrow...
I believe MS will control when PCs get updated, that way that can manage the server load. For some people it might be a few days before they get the update.

Agreed, but there is still a "metric fuck Ton" of pressure on all the internet providers.

I'm going to download all the windows first, so there will be none left for anyone else.

Some computers at school have Windows 10 installed.
I've had the Windows 10 offer since June 2nd.
https://plus.google.com/+Tiwaking/posts/WtKRPSFxyye
My laptop costs $300 and there is absolutely no way it could run Windows 10.
10/10 trolling points to Microsoft
-
My laptop costs $300 and there is absolutely no way it could run Windows 10.
If it can run windows 7 then it can probably run windows 10.
In fact I want to upgrade my old windows 7 laptop to 10, because windows 7 is so slow.
-
7 needed only 2gb of ram and 10 needs 3
-
Cragor, has win 10 been unlocked yet, whats it like?
Anybody else got the download?

I'm at work. I'll try tonight.
At home I currently have;
HTPC running Windows 10 preview.
Desktop with Win 8.1, quite happy with this so no hurry to upgrade.
Desktop with Win 7, takes ages to start up, so will be keen to upgrade this.
5 year old Laptop with Win 7, I don't really use it anymore, but I'm interested in upgrading it to windows 10 to see what kind of performance improvement it gets.
-
Keep us posted, I have an old school one (Dell latitude ET3) that could do with an upgrade.

Fix for the 80240020 error when trying to install Windows 10
Windows 10 installation folder is unfinished and/or corrupted just delete and start again.
1. Go into "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and delete everything in that folder.
2. Now, run the command prompt as an administrator. Type in "wuauclt.exe /updatenow".
3. Go to your Control Panel > Windows Update and your Windows 10 should start re-downloading from scratch.
-
^ Thanks for that
Also, can now download a ISO from here

It's still going to let me know when it comes out :(
Will things like steam / java break or should most applications still run "fine"

-
VLK keys just showed up on my msdn account.
one of the downsides from being an insider so long is now for my legitimate windows 8 keys in order to make sure i have no problems in future..
i have to still upgrade windows 8.1 installs to 10 to register my keys in the cloud.
guess ill fire up 2 windows 8.1 vms with my keys and then upgrade them to register them.

Got it in the end by downloading the Media Creation Tool.
So far it's very pretty. Just going through and re-installing certain apps that are having a hard time after the upgrade.
EDIT: Massive pet peeve already. Snap Assist. I like it, being able to drag a window to the top to have it auto resize to full screen and being able to simply drag it away from the top and have it 'unclip'. However the feature doesn't like being turned on in a multiple screen environment. Dragging an app to my second screen has it behave like a dog trying to bring a long stick through a doorway. It stops and attempts to 'snap' to the edge of my main monitor.
-
What are your thoughts on Microsoft edge? mine seems kinda broken.

PEBKAC.
-
PEBKAC.
Unfortunately not, I do appreciate your concern though.

Upgraded tonight from Win 7 Pro - Win 10 Pro. Upgrade itself was fine, but a few things annoyed me
- NIC wouldn't work after a reboot, but would after a cold boot. Beta NIC drivers released a couple of hours ago to fix... (Asus Sabertooth z87)
- I run a dual screen set up, 22" LCD on desk and 40" LED in corner. Windows detected it was a TV and autoscaled text and windows 150%. Interesting feature, but I don't like it in my use case (Spotify looked horrific upscaled). Would be cool for office-type stuff
- Corsair Link no worky (apparently work arounds available, sounds like a weekend job)
- Second screen on HDMI not detecting until driver update (Nvidia 970)
TLDR - have spare/up to date drivers handy before committing
-
installed Win 10 on my 5 year old laptop.
The trackpad no longer works.
I have no mouse cursor.

Do you need to install the latest Synaptics drivers? http://www.synaptics.com/en/drivers.php (http://www.synaptics.com/en/drivers.php)
I'm having an aneurysm trying to upgrade Win10 on my GFs Win8 laptop. Getting the 'something happened' error. Have tried multiple fixes including setting the language and region to US (English). Downloads, verifies the install files then either says "something happened" or the setup window just vanishes completely.

Have you tried downloading the iso, burning to a DVD and sticking in the DVD drive, old school styles. That worked for me.

I might try using a USB as a bootable option.

Not old school enough.
Take it back to '95 yo.

I still remember installing Win 95 onto PC's from floppy, back before CD's were particularly common.
Damn I've been working in IT too long lol.

ooh i remember that , nt3 /4 and OS2 warp all came on disk..
Windows 95 .. i think my copy filled 2 of those hard case disk boxes verbatim made desinged to fit 10 but would hold 12 at a squeeze, from memory 95 was 18 - 24 disks and then plus pack was another 6 -8 disks..
and then you had the old coca-cola theme...
-
Nah 95 was only about a dozen disks.. Office on the other hand was something asstastic like 30-40 disks.

I still have windows 3.1 and office on floppy disks, found it in all my old stuff when I was having a clean out a few weeks ago.. I kept it, no idea why lol.
In other news:

I got a bit of a fright when it sync'd the wallpaper of my Win8 lappy with my Win10 desktop. Just as well it wasn't anything nefarious.
After 24hrs use, Win10 is best win. Love it. Not going back.
-
Amen
-
I still have my 3.11 for workgroups windows disks.
And I have all my dos disk versions from 3 to 7.
Oh I really don't miss novella network and token ring adaptors.

Thoughts so far on windows 10
- Nice and clean looking
- Feels like what windows 8 should have been
Problems
- Sometimes shit freezes up
- Every 3rd or 4th time I turn my PC on, I get semi-corrupt user profile messages. It doesn't give on log in, but to things like "C:\Windows\system32\profile\downloads" doesn't exist.
- I had to turn off "notify me when programs make changes to my pc" as even windows was setting it off. Loading steam was impossible as I got an infinite amount of the messages "Do you want steam to make changes to your pc?"
Overall pretty happy. I expected bugs on release, and iirc it's usually "wait until service pack 2 / 3 for it to run as nicely as windows 7 does now"
-
I haven't had those problems so far, however whenever I play any type of audio the sound increases to max volume... I haven't really encountered any other bugs so far.
-
Upgraded two computers over the weekend though windows update. All went pretty smoothly.
I liked Win 8.1, but I like Win 10 even more. Things on the start menu seem much easier to get to. And looks very nice and clean.
Virtual desktops look like they would be useful at work.
-
Unfortunately Windows 7 is soon to meet its maker this year. I have a laptop which runs Windows 10 which I guess can be used to make videos or something.
The only thing I use my Windows XP computer for is programming using BlueJ and browsing the Internet with Chrome.
I'll be moving to ReactOS.
-
I've had my eye on React for years. Seems to be getting quite stable now, albeit against an older version of the windows.
Curious to know how that goes for you Tiwa :)
-
Virtual desktops look like they would be useful at work.
They weren't.
