Buy, Sell Or Trade / Re: WTB Laptop for uni work

Also depends if she wants a netbook or laptop. Whatever you do I'd try go for something light weight, carrying a laptop + textbooks can get heavy. I had an HP and while the wireless sometimes had issues (wireless in the library sucks to connect to - although I noticed macbooks never had issues) it's lasted me 3 years and still has a 4-5 hour battery life which was great if I had back to back lectures and no power sockets (often the case).

Quick trip to Fiji so took a few photos. I broke the resort room torch that would have created more of a beam so tried iPhone torch instead. Spent a bit of time trying to adjust the foreground but couldn't get it right.

Nikon D750 or 810.

he has glass already

6D has really only been released under a year . waiting for that you might be holding your breath till your blue in teh face
7DII ... no go full frame with 6D unless you wanna shoot off 10 frames a sec

Are the AF points and cross focus points a big difference? I noticed there were no cross focus points and maybe 11 AF on the 6d. I guess anything would be an upgrade from the 550d

The 6 series camera that came out with the filters or lack of .. is the 60DA and it is missing a hydrogen filter

And if you like i can put you in contact with Mark Gee but he lives in wellington
there is a dude who shoots the same way . Rob Dickinson who lives in chch and often runs astro workshops

https://www.facebook.com/RobDickinsonPhotography?fref=ts

Cool thanks, will check out his page. I use my camera for a range of things, but do love taking night time stuff, is it worth me spending money on something like that or just spending the money on a better camera in general?

In all honesty rather than going for a 60DA you would be better saving a few $$$ more and getting a 6D (same sensor as the 5DIII)

If I'm in no real rush should I wait for the 7d ii or possibly even the 6d ii if that gets announced early next year?

Bought the Tokina 11-16mm F2.8, went out just behind Chch Airport and took a few shots. Would be cool further out with less light pollution. Found this guy on Facebook, he takes some awesome shots! https://www.facebook.com/markgphoto?fref=nf (not anyone here is it?!)

I really enjoyed this, it's crazy to see how the tournament prize pools have increased over the last 2-3 years. Looked at tournaments in DotA2 the other day and 3-4 on the first page had prize pools of about $250000. Makes it more viable as a career if you're in one of the top teams.

Yeah I had a look at that site but the models I was looking at I could get $20-$30 cheaper from ebay.

China Southern 787 charter flight to Christchurch today. I couldn't see it on flightradar and think it's been delayed so may head down to try get a photo.

We have had a few C130's here lately, prob std for yo'all big city folk but pretty cool to see down here. The sounds cool.

Where abouts are you? Always get them in Chch before they go to Antarctica. The C17 is cool to see!

The downside with using 50mm f1.8 is the fact you have to keep your shutter speed short to stop the star trails .. which in turn causes you to push your iso causing "noise" there is a formula for lenses and "size"

max exposure time = 1000 devided by focal length

So
10mm   : 100 secs
20mm   : 50 secs
50mm   : 20 secs
100mm : 10 secs
300mm : 3.3 secs

.. you wanna keep your aperture as high as possible .. IE: 1.8 or F2.4 F2.8 F3.5 F4 ect ..

your best friend at night is wide angle as it will let more light in so if you have an 18-55 f4 ect .. but its good to experiment (the downside to using a wideangle such as a 10mm lens is that you will always get star movement towards the outside of your lens.

Lemme where your at in nz bro and i can always go out with you and give you some help or point you towards some friends around the country that are very proficient

Awesome thanks for that, that's awesome! Wanna go out and try that now. I thought I read somewhere about having aperture around 8 or 9 but maybe that was for lighter times in the day. I'm down in Christchurch so a bit far from Auckland.
Looking at getting another lens I'm really keen on a wide angle or maybe something like the 15-85mm. Also was maybe thinking about a 18-200mm as a general lens when I can't swap them easily. I've got a 550d.

Have you tried updating punkbuster?

go to www.evenbalance.com and download the updater

this worked for me

Haha classic iconz reply.

When I had the spawn bug everyone told me to manually update punkbuster, reminded me of the old days. Where's rex and bob anyway?

Dead, what kind of settings are you using for a shot like that? (Maybe you've hidden EXIF data).
I've been struggling to find the right point, this shot had really high iso because I was trying to avoid the star trails, bit blurry though and I didn't have a tripod which made it difficult.
F/9 60secs 6400iso should I be bumping down the aperture so I can use a lower exposure/iso?

I do mine at f2.8, 30sec and about 400iso, then some exposure and contrast adjustment in lightroom. f9 is too dark, and 60 sec too long as you will end up with streaks of stars as the earth rotates.

Pine Tops by mcctravels, on Flickr

Yeah I was trying to avoid the streaks, figured my aperture must have been a bit high. Would have to use my 50mm 1.8 to get a low aperture like yours. What time was that photo taken?

What sort if latency are most of you seeing?
What server host do you prefer, and why not the others?

My ping is usually around 65 to aus servers. I normally pick 32p servers. I play on the eGL HC servers (the inf only HC ones, seem to crash often though) BW server, or maybe DFG (they seem to have rubberband issues on larger player servers and maps - especially langcam dam). Have found a server called The Drunken Soldiers and they have low vehicle respawn which is fun. I avoid playing on some games on net servers as they have 110 ping being on the other side of aus or something?

Holy shit yes. My mate and I have turned in to real planespotters. We will take the time to rock out to the airport at any time of day and just take photos or sit and talk shit and watch planes. We even look up the registration codes of the private planes to see if we can find anything out about them.

Seeing the different planes, engine noises, and the general shapes, sizes and differences is great, and we're pretty lucky in Auckland having such a diverse range of incoming and outgoing flights.

Yeah down here in CHCH we don't get as many (large planes we only have one 777-200 and one 777-300 a day) so it was cool  when the a380s got diverted here last year - posted some pics in the cool photos you've taken thread just before. When I was up in Auckland was awesome sitting there watching the different planes taking off and landing.
