Post by: Apostrophe Spacemonkey on September 13, 2012, 10:06:11 am
Apple has announced the iPhone 5.

Features are

I'm not too impressed. I was more impressed by the iPhone 4S. The only thing that stands out is the iPhone5 is thinner and lighter, which will be great for people who like thin and light phones.

Imo, the new iPhone doesn't stack up (tech wise) against the Samsung and Nokia offerings.

iPhone 5 will go on sale at the end of this month

Apple has done it again!! It has introduced another revolutionary  product that will be industry-leading the day it comes out. I am very  happy with all the upgrades and improvements of the iPhone 5 over the  4S.

* The iPhone 5 includes a revolutionary A6 processor. Dual-core. Simply  incredible. Now you'll be able to open up and navigate to Settings to  disable 4G/Data even faster than ever. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has  dual-core, a direct blatant copy of Apple. Get a life, Samsung!

* iPhone 5 has free voice navigation. Android has had this for quite  some time, a blatant copy of iPhone 5's features. Android is such a bad  copy of Apple.

* The iPhone 5 has 4G LTE connectivity. Simply ingenious!! All Android  phones now have 4G LTE, a blatant copy of Apple. Android and Google need  to stop copying Apple and develop their own ideas.

* The iPhone 5 has the revolutionary Panorama camera feature. The  Samsung Galaxy S3 also does this, a blatant copy of Apple. This will  make taking pictures a snap. The ability to save near-infinite photos on  16GB (no microsd slot) will be amazing. Thank you, Apple!

* The iPhone 5 comes with a revolutionary new connector - Lightning!  It's another sure-fire way for Apple and product-manufacturers to get  more money from selling new products that support Lightning. Lightning  is the name of the main character of Final Fantasy XIII, a blatant copy  of iPhone 5's connector. Square Enix, get a life! Apple should also sue  God for patent-infringement - Apple created Lightning.

* The iPhone 5 has a revolutionary 4" screen, but the phone is still the  same width as the 4S. Simply breathtaking to look at. The LG G2X also  has a 4" screen, a blatant copy of Apple. Get a life, LG. Stop copying  Apple!!

* The iPhone 5 has 640x1136 resolution, slightly less than Samsung's  Galaxy S3 1280x720, but Apple is still better because, let's face it -  they're Apple.

These reasons and more, my friends, are the reasons why Apple is #1 and  is the reason why the iPhone 5 will sell in record quantities. Long live  Apple!! In the name of Steve Jobs, Amen!

Lots of hype, no real substance imo - would appear to be a step or 2 behind where the market is at. Can see them selling like hotcakes to the faithful followers, reality is there are better offerings out there. And the price in NZ, talk about cooked....

Nothing too special features wise, but does look to be of exceptional build quality http://www.apple.com/iphone/design/

This is one thing I hate about other phones, that cheap plastic feel.

I'll probably buy one.

USB2.0 -> http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD818/lightning-to-usb-cable

"This USB 2.0 cable connects your iPhone or iPod with Lightning  connector to your computer's USB port for syncing and charging or to the  Apple USB Power Adapter for convenient charging from a wall outlet.

That's a bit ignorant, not all phones are plastic, I felt the S1 and S2 were pure plastic but all my htc phones have had a solid feel with brushed aluminum with my current sensation having an interestingly lovely rubberised coating that IMO is fantastic for preventing the phone slipping out of my hand. I've yet to dent my sensation.

Mine's quite functional as the app I developed for it controls most of my house (with siri integration so you can tell things to turn on/off or open/shut if you are too lazy to press a button).. so that still makes my 4S cooler than theirs

That is just another example of their agenda. Suckering money out of naive consumers through good marketing.
Making geeky tech products somehow cool to people who want to feel they are superior. While people who have a clue about tech products use better cheaper more flexible, versatile alternatives.
The reaction to the popularity of APPL is starting to show, like all big trends there is a reaction to the mainstream and what was cool, will soon be the opposite.
The release of the iPhone5 has been so carefully crafted to sucker fans into parting with money, it's amazing. Much like the Cod series.

I'm no fanboy of anything, but this is a pretty stupid ad.

According to this poster, the only benefit the S3 has specs-wise is 2GB Ram, which would be unnoticeable in normal usage due to iOS being less resource hogging. I dont believe the listed battery standby time, my 4S eats my brothers S3's battery life.

It then goes on to list a whole lot of Samsung software features, without listing any from iOS.

I'm not gonna debate which phone is 'better', but its a pretty brainless poster.

Not to mention I have actually disabled almost all of those "extras"

Try doing that with your iPhone. S3 + MHL + PS3/XBOX controller + Big ass TV = Fuckinggamesandmoviesandpornandshitbroumad.

Post by: BerG on September 18, 2012, 08:22:14 pm
So....your point is that the S3 is a superior phone because if you want to follow a long list of instructions you can get an inferior game to play on your TV using a PS3 controller?

I'm sure its great for kids. But failing to see how this automatically makes the S3 the worlds best phone. What if you dont play games, like me? My memories of searching for games on my S2 was a whole bunch of games I tried to download only to discover they weren't  compatible with the handset. The ones that did actually work had inferior framerates and graphics to iOS games. If you want to go down that road, I think iOS is probably the superior gaming platform. In saying that, most Android handsets have bigger screens which would make games nicer too.

Horse's for courses, is what you boys need to understand.

Not sure the metaphors are really doing the job.

It's amusing that you have again referred to an Apple product as being a high powered sports car yet are sure you aren't a fanboi

The point was more that like Android, Toyota produces a large range of products, from high end to low end, targeting all price points and therefore a higher consumer base.

Like Lamborghini, Apple only produce a high end model with a high price point.

Therefore saying that Toyota make superior cars because they sell more is completely stupid, like Swindle.

But Toyota makes nothing close to the power of a Lamborghini.

A better comparison might be between Rolls-Royce & Mercedes-Benz the first only makes luxury cars while the other makes a wider range including direct competitors to the first.

I will agree that Swindles point is a bit shit.

That being said .... I am very keen to give the Galaxy a try, I have had an Iphone 4 for a year or so now, and have really enjoyed it. Was holding out for the 5, but doesn't seem like too much of an improvement (as far as for me goes) ... most of the apps i use etc all open instantly and such the processor speed not really an issue to me. And the size/weight/thickness thing, yea thats nice... but again not that big of a deal to me.

I think I will try the s3, and if I don't like it go back to a 4 (depending on iPhone 5 prices)

... not that anyone cares probably (just thought I should add something relevant after outing BerG as my love childs semenological father)

What I discovered, I must not speak about around these parts. But let me just say, keep that iPhone 4 somewhere safe.

Yea they seem like massive profit margins. Yes they are nice and slick, but hard to justify the jump from $250 to $800. Especially for a phone. I mean i only use my phone to browse the web, use it as a phone and play the odd game/use a app.

My VF smart1 contract is $44 p/month for 3GB, 2500sms, 1000pxt, and 60 mins. Is pretty mean but hardly use any of it, my cycle ends in 2 days and using the V/F app to check balances i've used 6 pxts, 30mins, 151 sms, and 416MB.

2,000 in staff riot at iPhone's Chinese 'sweatshop' factory after 'guard beats up worker'

A riot involving 2,000 workers broke out at an Apple factory in China, leaving 40 people injured.

More than 5,000 police were reportedly sent to bring the riot at the Foxconn factory in the northern city of Taiyuan in the Shanxi province of China until control after trouble erupted in workers' sleeping quarters yesterday.

Comments on Chinese internet bulletin boards said the trouble may have been sparked by a security guard hitting an employee and not related to the recent anti-Japan protests.

In a statement, the Taiwanese-owned company said: 'A personal dispute between several employees escalated into an incident involving some 2,000 workers at approximately 11pm last night in a privately-managed dormitory.'

Maybe they had been taken off the iPhone 5 pre-order list?

Had a 2 hour training with the iPhone 5 today - pretty lack luster tbh. Its remarkably lighter now but nothing else really appealed. I might wait and see if Samsung or Nokia want to give me another free phone to 'test' for them in the future. The Lumia 920 is looking pretty good.

Need to make money somehow... Why sell iPhones outright and only make a $20 profit...

Let's say you owned a franchise off Vodafone, you got in an allocation of 20 phones, you make $20 profit with an outright purchased compared to profit and percentage of ongoing plan cost from the customer that signs up to a plan. Who would you want to sell it to?

Obviously after the launch customer would be able to buy outright....

Apple has aggressive rollout plans for the newest iPhone. Nine countries are now selling the iPhone 5, and that will grow to more than 100 by the end of the year.
Colin Gillis, a technology analyst at BTIG in New York, said: "On any metric, this is a success. It's one million more units than last time. But this is Apple, and given the expectations on this company, they have to not just set records – they have to smash them."
Gillis said smartphone sales in general were slowing and that Apple had already conceded that sales of iPhone 4Ss had been hit as customers put off buying them in anticipation of the next release.
Apple had been expected to sell 25m iPhones in the September quarter and Gillis said the company could now miss that. "Quite frankly, a lot of people have smartphones already. The market is slowing down," he said. best buy iphone 4 cases (http://www.witrigs.com/iphone-case)

The Iphone still has a far better app store than the android, but in saying that the Android OS is better..... I still like the size of the iphone better than the s3, s3 too big to hold, iphone 5 you can still hold it nicely with one hand, fits well in pockets etc and the size of the screen is all you need.

Think I'd still go for the Iphone over Android only because of the App store and the size of the phone. If this phone was running Android with the Iphone App store it would be a match made in heaven

Na bro, Android way better, you can do more with it. At the end of the day its a menu structure with icons and with Android there is alot more customization and not to mention how open it is to access anything.....

There may be alot more apps on the play store but most of them are all rubbish compared to the Apple ones.

But the overriding factor is that a jailbreak will not be available for at least many months.

I'm playing with JB on my sensation, just tried a JB MiUi now downloading CMX. Just came from 3.6 sense ARHD ICS that has probably been the best ROM i've ever used across all my phones.

Been downloading over HDSPA whilst working so been taking it's sweet as time, 75% done...

Miui? Kind of, their launcher is only the surface. Most of their rom is rewritten. It's fantastic. All the niceness of the ui features etc in ios with all the benefits of android

maybe this should be split off to the android thread... lol

Essentially there are 3 base rom options for HTC, cyanogenmod, sense, and miui. Cyanagenmod is as close as you'll get to bare bones android. Sense is HTC's UI whilst MiUI is a Chinese UI that is more like iOS than AOSP.

Just played with CMX and pretty much like the CM7, CM8, and CM9 I just don't like it, I think the scrolling sideways apps drawer turns me off although now having customisable status bar widgets is nice but miui has had that perfected since froyo.

CM and MiUI can be used on other phone brands too note.

lol, is it really?
Did you just see a small number and therefore completely dismiss it? Some good Fox News logic there.

That number represents the increased chance of an app failing between andriod and apple per run.
The fail rate at worst is only %3.6 so %0.69 is actually a significant proportional difference.
Put into proportional terms.... A 3rd quartile IOS app is %20 more likely to fail on startup compared to an Andriod App

And how about looking at the 1st quartile, the top tier IOS apps are 3.4 times more likely to crash compared to their Andriod counterparts.

Which I don't think is splitting hairs and if true is very good rebuttal to what Berg said.

Yeah pretty much this.

I think a lot of people get confused when dealing with percentages of a percentage. Honestly when I mark 100-level papers, I have not seen a single person get it right.

Say I (hypothetically) get a sample of 100 for a survey of transportation methods. I find that 75 people primarily use a car, and 15 people primarily use a motorbike (i.e. 75% and 15% respectively).

Now the absolute difference between these two figures is 60 percentage points. It should be clear, however, that it's not correct to say 60% more people use a car than a motorbike.

From those figures 400% more people primarily use cars than motorbikes.

In the same way, Bell is just so right in pointing out that, actually, top tier iOS apps are 240% more likely to crash than their Android equivalents. The contrast between 1st quartile apps is actually the most stark, although there is clearly a floor effect (i.e. an app can't crash less than 0% of the time).

But yeah, educational rant, hopefully someone learns something about data analysis.

Never said Apple invented anything but they have brought almost everything into a nice neat package for the users. You can do about the same amount of things on both mobile operating systems but I personally prefer not having to muck around to get this working, native ALC playback, larger communities for each device and generally higher app quality.

I do however like Android's openness which allows some cool stuff like different launchers and programming Arduino compatible boards.

What I hate about both sides is that advanced users have to resort to jail breaking or rooting to do specific tasks.

I can't decide between Android and iOS for a phone, they are too evenly matched. Do I pay more and get convience or do I pay less but have to fuck around more? The tablets iOS wins because of the app store.

Buy Android phone. Turn on said phone. Use said phone.

Tell me at what stage you need to "fuck around to make things work"?. Its not like they send you a phone that is unformatted with no OS and no apps, that you then have to finish coding and flash via odin.

Cloud syncing and storage across multiple devices, for iOS it just requires you to login using your account. Android for example requires actually setting up Dropbox last I remember with 3.0
Some older hardware is not given updates that it should and requires resorting to CFW, nexus products are usually kept in the loop but other manufacturers are guilty of this. Where an Appple product usually gets updates 2-4 years after it's release.
Another thing is all the shit a manufacturer or carrier may install on your phone for you and some people hate this.
It toke me a week or so to setup the Android tablet the way I wanted it and there was constant problems that required fixing like the wifi connection. Randomly it would disconnect and required me to re-enter the key but that wouldn't work either sometimes.

No I personally prefer the products but I actually also owned an Android tablet, I recommended Android products actually to people if they want a cheaper smartphone, bigger screen sizes or if they are the kind of people who like to tinker with mobile devices. I really want an Arduino development environment for iOS but I know it's not going to happen.

I agree with you here, we can already see Android addressed issues with iOS from day one and it has influenced other companies for the better. Notification drop down, multiple handset makers, bigger screen sizes, proper maps application.

Yes they are outselling but the iOS is targeting a specific market, Apple has pretty much always said its their way or the highway. Android devices are far more available and the number of devices and prices pretty much blankets the market. It is a bit like the Nokia and Blackberry, both were profitable but Nokia's were something everyone had while Blackberries were for that specific market.

It's no surprise that Android are a much bigger seller, there's alot of dirt cheap android phones out there. Cheap phones sell more, that's obvious.

iPhone targets the high-end market, it's not really fair to compare iPhone sales to Andriod sales across all markets.

I agree, you can't compare how many Android phones sold vs Iphone because there is about 20 different manufacturers selling phones with Android on them ranging from $80 to $1000.....

I doubt the cheaper Android phones will be able to cope with any serious processing loads. They are normally made with outdated hardware so they normally need to be replaced every year or less to keep up with the latest apps. I know someone who purchased a cheap Android Sony phone for around $500 and temple run lags enough to be unplayable.

Ok bell, go out and buy the Vodafone 858 and use it for a week and then tell me that it's an awesome device that can do everything. I'd bet $100 you would have thrown it against the wall because of how frustrating it is to use, the screen size and processor in it makes even checking emails bad let alone trying to use it as a GPS device or web browser. xoxo

The functionality may be there on paper but usability is a joke and people want a phone that works well.

Best Android for price at the moment in NZ is the HTC desire X for $399. Go buy one today at your nearest Vodafone Store. ;)

Playing games isn't important.
Having an affordable device that can deliver mobile access to the internet, video, GPS, twitter etc to the masses is pretty powerful stuff.

No they aren't they are just an example, but there will be other tasks out there that the cheaper phones just can't handle. An E90 communicator could do all the listed tasks as well. Hell even a 3120c could do all that minus the GPS.

Wait what. You consider a cheap android to be $500?

That is a lot cheaper compared to the phones at the 1000$ mark. Android phones cheaper than that and you might as well get a cheap Nokia phone because the screen is too small or it is too far out of date. At the $500 dollar mark one can pick up the slightly outdated but still pretty good Galaxy Nexus.

So you're talking about Apple then?
5 years and 6 phone. You fucking tell me bro.
Android phones with fucking old school Gingerbread are still be made and used, on hold hardware, and run really well.

The 3Gs from 2009 got iOS6(Yes doesn't have full support but that is what the Cydia/AppStore is for), I don't see the EVO 4G, Nexus One or DROID getting Jellybean.
But not by major players, see how support they'll have in a years time.

It's probably best you take another look at what Android offers at certain price brackets.

I have a $250 Huawei. 1GHz, 4" screen, Adreno GPU, 5MP camera. Runs amazingly well with ICS.

Not to mention, if you are willing to directly buy it from china yourself, you can pick up above spec phones even cheaper (sub-$300). Androids are by far superior for the middle market.

Link? The last time I looked at the $300$ bracket was when the P500 was $200$

$400.

The Galaxy Nexus is $468$ish so I rounded up, would still rather pay the extra $70$ for a flagship device to get a greater amount of support from Google, CFW devs and app devs.

Almost any phone is cheaper from china, never said they weren't. It is exactly where I am looking and why I am asking RB for the link.

Your $'s are all up on the wrong side of your numbers.

$ sign should go before the number.

Apple's Biggest Rival In China Sold Out Its New Phone In Just 3 Minutes
ROB PRICE  YESTERDAY AT 8:30 AM
The launch of the rising Chinese technology giant Xiaomi’s latest mobile phone has been a resounding success, Android Central reports, with the Mi Note selling out just three minutes after it went on sale on Tuesday morning.

We don’t know how many devices were sold, but Xiaomi has received more than 220 million reservations for the mobile device (though these won’t all translate into sales). The company is aiming to sell 100 million devices in 2015 — a substantial jump from the 61.1 million sold in 2014.

Xiaomi is sometimes described as the “Apple of China,” and it has been criticised for producing devices that bear remarkable similarities to those of the Cupertino company. Apple design boss Jony Ive has labelled the designs of Xiaomi’s phones as “theft.” But for the Mi Note, Xiaomi eschewed Apple’s aesthetic, instead opting for a simple, elegant glass design. (CEO Lei Jun even mocked Apple’s designs during the Mi Note’s unveiling.)

The Mi Note also boasts impressive specs, packing more RAM, a bigger battery and a more powerful camera into the Mi Note than is in the iPhone 6 — at a significantly cheaper cost. The Mi Note starts at $US370, while the iPhone is $US749 for the lowest-spec option. Early reviews of the Mi Note are also highly positive.

It's easy to make someone sell out in 3 minutes.

Just make one of them.
