Buy, Sell Or Trade / FS: Whole or Parts - offer away
« on: June 25, 2015, 10:13:15 am »
So, I have three PC's I'm pulling apart, or will sell as wholes. I'm gathering money to chuck these down in to a single machine, and make a small Rii style beast PC. So out the door goes everything...

PC 1:
ASUS Sabretooth X58 Motherboard
i7 9xxx 3.2GHz (LGA1366) CPU - not 100% sure on the model, as it's an Intel sample, and rocks for overclocking
24GB G.Skill Sniper DDR3 RAM (6 x 4GB 1600MHz 9-9-9-24)
Sapphire AMD 6970 2GB DDR5 Graphics Card
2 x 240GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD
Intel 250GB SSD
Seagate 2TB SSHD
ASUS Xonar D2X Sound card (I have two of these)
Corsair AX850W PSU (I have some of the other modular cables also)
Antec 920 CPU Cooler
Fractal Define R2

PC 2:
ASRock Z77 Extreme4-M Motherboard
Intel i7 3770 3.40GHz (LGA1155) CPU
16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM (4 x 4GB 1600MHz 9-9-9-24)
Sapphire Radeon HD6450 1GB DDR3 Graphics (DVI, HDMI, VGA outputs)
Corsair Force 120GB SSD
FSP PSU 750W Modular Power Supply (Gold rated)
Thermaltake DH 102 case

The third PC I have minimal details on, as I haven't quite pulled it open and sorted it, and I'm not at home at the moment to get these details, but here's what I know:
PC 3:
AMD Phenom II 1100T CPU
16GB DDR2 Corsair Vengeance RAM
Corsair AX750W PSU

8 x 2TB Western Digital Green HDD's

So if you have any requests on the above, or need to know anything, give me a yell, else I'll have to work out whether to go through the TradeMe pain....

First-Person Shooter / Star Wars Battlefront

I was about to sell my PC. I still will. But in November next year I'm going to have to buy a new one it seems... Dammit EA...

2142 meets Star Wars meets all sorts of awesomeness. You have my attention EA, now go ahead and let me down like you normally do.

Technology & Hardware / PC component value vs. whole rig sale?
« on: February 16, 2015, 01:48:20 pm »
Hey dudes,

I'm about to sell of my old PC, and curious as to thoughts on price on the parts and whole, and which way is the best way to go:

Fractal Design R3 Case
Corsair AX750W PSU
Intel i7-970 CPU (Quad with HT 3.2GHz) (LGA1366)
24GB (3 x 8GB) G.Skill RAM
Antec Kuhler 920 CPU Water cooling unit
ASUS Blu Ray Combo drive
Samsung DVD Combo drive
Sapphire AMD 6970 GPU
ASUS Sabretooth X58 Motherboard
ASUS Xonar D2X Soundcard

I also have a couple of other Media Centre PC's which I'll also be getting rid of, but wanting to get a gauge on whether I'm better to break them up, or try to sell off as whole machines... Ideally I'm trying to avoid multiple TradeMe transactions (well ideally I'll avoid TradeMe altogether).

Technology & Hardware / IFTTT
« on: September 25, 2014, 11:05:43 am »
Anyone else use this? And if so, what recipes you using?

For those not aware: ifttt.com, it's an if then else scenario builder for various triggers and results you want to build. For example, if I take a photo on my iPhone, I can upload it to SkyDrive. Or when I get to work, mute my Android phone.

Other Games / Hearthstone - Naxx time
« on: July 22, 2014, 03:37:45 pm »
Hey all,

If you're a Hearthstone player, you'll know perfectly well that overnight tonight the first expansion comes out. I'm not 100% sure on times, but I'd imagine with most other Blizzard releases, it'll happen in the early hours of the morning our time.

If you have been under that rock, crawel out and take in the cards to halt your Miracle Rogues, Shockadins, Hunter Zoos, and general shit-tardery that has crept in to the classes that seem to see them stall as a particular play style for most players.
Here's a good summary on Gamepedia.

General Chat / It's LAN time...!
« on: July 16, 2014, 10:30:33 am »

Hey all,

So in the background of this fair site, we've been working away. It may look like a static site of just a forum, but changes and implementations are afoot, and we're trying our best to re-establish thew gaming communities in NZ with a home they can all congregate to - as big of a task as that may seem.

As a reminder, the 5 directors of Get Some Ltd are myself, Craigor, DV, osiRiS, and prolax, and we've all worked together for a decent amount of time to know how each other works, what our strengths are, and what our crossover is. I mainly look after the general project dealings, Craigor & DV look after all the servers hardware & base set ups, as well as the web sites, prolax does all the design and prettiness, as well as the site look and feel, and osiRiS makes sure the forums, and game servers are sorted.

I'm really pleased to finally be able to say that we're working alongside Digital NatioNZ and in conjunction with the September 28 and 29 expo we'll be hosting a LAN. This will be a combination of a pro competitive event, and a full social set up and will be at Vector Arena, overlooking the Digital NatioNZ and Gadget, Gizmos & Technology Show.

This has been announced today, and given the weekend just gone would have marked the typical time that we would have seen a major LAN event, it's party time for sure. We're really pleased to be able to be involved, and hopefully be ready to bring some gaming awesome back to these shores in a fully competitive event alongside a social atmosphere, but just as importantly, inside a fully tricked out expo! It's been three years since we ran our last event, and this next one is the revival of good things to come.

So, what next!?
Tickets for the show will be available next month, and although this is quite late in the piece for the LAN event, we're working on our side of things for registration and the likes to ensure we know who's going to come, and what games will be getting the most support.

We're hoping to update the site at the end of the month with some changes including a few customised bits & pieces. We hope you'll support both these changes, and the upcoming event which is only 10 weeks away, and will be all sorts of amazing at the same time.

Questions!?

Sports / Fitness / Ketogenic Diet
« on: July 14, 2014, 04:07:09 pm »
So, I started this at the beginning of July. Slowly edged in to over the first few days before fulling immersing myself over the last 10 days. So far so good, and after a weekend of so many sweet treats being at my disposal, I thought I'd just post up my own amazement at my self control.

For those unaware or unable to Google, a Ketogenic diet effectively removes sugars and effectively all carbs from your diet with the view that your body will then burn the fats rather than any sugar or their carbohydrate containers you are inserting. The effects are obviously weight loss, but there are other benefits which for me now I'm through that first horrible week of feeling like shit is an alertness, and clarity in thinking, and generally feeling better.

Anyone else done this, or the Atkins diet (which is in effect Keto's induction phase), or anything similar?

General Chat / Shipping from Chch to AKL
« on: June 10, 2014, 12:25:25 pm »
Hey dudes,

I'm looking to ship a Mac Pro from Chch to Auckland - it's obviously a weighty beast, and the guy I'm buying it from is looking to charge me $115 for shipping...

Anyone have any suggestions on a shipping service that won't cost a return airfare?

Technology & Hardware / Wireless Keyboard & Bluetooth keyboard lag
« on: April 22, 2014, 04:05:54 pm »
Anybody have any fixes/suggestions around this?

We have a Bluetooth Logitech Dinovo Edge upstairs, and it gets input lag - I'll be sitting no more than 2 metres away from the bluetooth dongle which is in the back of the PC, and it doesn't respond well at all; you have to sort of move so the keyboard is unimpeded by anything other than the PC before it works smoothly.

Downstairs has a Logitech K400 with a unifying receiver, and it would be no more than 4 metres away from a completely unimpeded receiver (is plugged in to a front USB port) and still has input lag unless you move it a bit or get closer...

General Chat / Easter Projects?
« on: April 17, 2014, 01:21:48 pm »
What you got lined up?

I'm optimistically going to try to:

1. Replace two dying drives on my VM Host.
2. Program the Media Centre PC's in the house (we have two) so that everything automates for Plex and the remotes are set up correctly.
3. Set up remote connectivity for all the PC's in the house via Teamviewer and VNC.
4. Set up back ups again on my PC and across my two NAS's.
5. Start to replace the speaker surrounds on my home theatre speakers (the foam edging has gone on them all, and I only just got them back from the ex, and found them in total dire need of fixing - probably why she wanted to give them back to me lol).

General Chat / A Wellingtonian Favour...

I'm trying to avoid having to fly down!

Where: Monday 21st April
When: Monday 21st April - 2pm onwards?
Where: Galbraith's Alehouse
Who: you mafukkas

Options for where are the question, and then we can organise a convoy of doom to where ever it might take us. Ellerslie, Manukau or other given we're trying to avoid central?

Technology & Hardware / Velociraptor vs. 7200rpm
« on: March 07, 2014, 12:01:15 pm »
Sooooo, I've got a failing 600GB Velociraptor. I'm looking at either changing the way I have the drives configured in my PC to cover the missing 480GB of data that is currently on that drive, or I'll purchase a 1 or 2TB drive and just deal with the slower speeds. Question is, can anyone real world compare for me? I'm not interested in graphs and shit, just any anecdotal opinions on whether I'll even notice a speed change or not.

This query relates to this thread of course.

Intellectual Discussion / Media vs. Responses
« on: February 26, 2014, 04:15:33 pm »
So I just read this article:
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11209806
which references this article:
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/dana-johannsen-on-sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=1502860&objectid=11204998

I'm kind of riled on both sides here. Reporter writes article, which reporting aside, and the topic aside is opinionated, and quite polarising - personally I feel she fails to provide any observation around the Winter Olympics and generally the whole feel of the Winter sport community is very different to that of other sports.

That aside, the parts that annoy me are firstly the fact she has obviously had a sever amount of distaste for what she wrote, and that the public can not subjectively and with some sort of discussion provide critical feedback. But the second part that annoys me is her obvious bullshit response that is just as troll worthy as those who have invoked this response out of her in the first instance.

I tend to feel that as the reporter, and the one who has the public pressures and the job (most importantly) there should be some sort of bullshit filter that she understands has to be put in place from time to time.

Thoughts?

Technology & Hardware / HDD is getting checkdisk'd - concerning?
« on: February 17, 2014, 06:43:41 pm »
Is Checkdisk running a sign of dead drive to come? It's a non-OS drive, but not really one I want to lose (is any drive one you want to lose).

The drive keeps failing back up (on read, not write to the remote location), and on a few recent start ups it's been shitting itself to Checkdisk. Any ideas dudes?

Titanfall / MP Info
« on: February 17, 2014, 01:28:46 pm »
A whole host of info posted here:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=769961

I won't cut and paste the whole thread, and there's an extensive amount of detail on perks, weapons, and maps in there. The game will be quite the big.

Titanfall / Banging the Beta
« on: February 14, 2014, 01:16:22 pm »
So I watched about an hour of some douche in the US streaming on XBOX One last night. He was pretty good in respect to aim, but tactically horrific. My observations:

  • The beta will be two maps. The city one you will have seen (Angel City I think it's called), and a large more open one.
  • The takedown of humans is very similar to BF, but the aim and recoil is Call of Duty-esque.
  • Mastering the use of the environment is going to be pretty big in this game from what I can see.
  • The cap points for Domination which this guy played quite a bit are very open. I see this as a good thing, cos no one likes a ninja capper.
  • He played with that annoying voice on, but it didn't seem to annoy as much (or he turned it down) as when I saw it in videos.
  • I noticed that when he was on foot, I was looking for human targets, but the minute he was in his or another Titan, your focus turned to other Titans. This will be an interesting dynamic to get around.
  • He played very little inside the Titan, so not able to comment on that much.
  • Movement on foot is very brisk, and definitely gives the feel of a fast paced game.
  • The big question I have is over run and gun, and hip fire - and this will only really be obvious once you have the game on your machine.

General Chat / Happy V day!

To all you February 2014 singles like me, happy Valentines day babeses.

I hope your lube, left hand and rhythm perform well on this fine day. Or if dry frying is your preference, then enjoy that also. For those up for a special night, try the reverse underleg monkey grip.

Technology & Hardware / What's Tor?
« on: February 12, 2014, 10:27:12 am »
I've been following this whole #TheDayWeFightBack stuff (refer here for those not following for a good AMA on reddit) and one of the things that seems to be common in amongst the discussions is Tor, and how we should be using it.

Anyone use it? And anyone able to give a bit of an explanation (both layman and technical would be good)?

General Chat / What are you or have you kickstarted/indiegogo'd?
« on: February 10, 2014, 03:19:03 pm »
Thought I'd fire up a thread as it's always interesting seeing what people are backing in the crowdfunding area. Especially as the sites are so crowded with potential projects, it would be good to see what others are, or have backed whether on Indiegogo or Kickstarter, or some other site, or even independently.

To fire it off, my toys:

Smart Herb Garden
A cool little desk garden which operates fantastically. I'd definitely recommend it for retail purchase, and I can see this getting stronger as a product over time. I'm growing Basil, Thyme & Lemon Balm. I had no issues with MAF (surprisingly), and the unit was perfect when it arrived. My only criticisms would be that they promised other seeds with the kickstarter which weren't delivered, there is no current way to get more cartridges for the garden, and one of the features I wanted (smartphone app) is not yet available.

Titanium Keychain tool
A small and easy purchase, this is just a titanium multi-tool. Was something I actually could see myself using, and lo and behold it's become very handy.

Fusion Plate
A simple tripod mount with a loop connected for attaching your shoulder strap. This is a solidly made piece of gear with the only downside I still need to buy a ball head for my tripod as I'm using a video fluid head lol. I still use them for the shoulder strap I have though.

HOT Watch
In the same vain as the Pebble watch, this a "smart" watch with some extra features. Has ended up having some extensive changes since I kickstarted, and will be a very interesting gadget once it arrives... In about 3 months. Which is only 4 months over it's touted arrival...

Legion Portable Battery
Just a standard portable battery for your gadget needs. This one has an ePaper readout to show various stats, and is also a giant 11,000 mAh for me. Supposed to arrive in the next month or so now Chinese New Year is over with.

What you guys rolled out with?

Sports / Fitness / Cricket World Cup 2015
« on: February 10, 2014, 01:59:49 pm »
The tickets are about to go on sale if you've pre-registered to buy them and have a code:
http://tickets.cricketworldcup.com/fixtures/default.aspx

NZ tickets are roughly about $60 per adult for the non top team games, and the England & Aus matches (at Wellington & Auckland respectively) are tiered with $90 tickets being the more worthwhile ones.

Anyone going to look at buying this far out, or going to chance your luck with a ticket closer to the actual tournament? Or can you just not be stuffed, and Sky TV will be your friend?
