General Chat / Do you donate blood?
« on: January 27, 2014, 06:16:01 pm »
So recently I donated blood for the first time. It was all in all a positive experience.

Since doing so I've talked to a few people here and there, and a lot of them have also donated blood at one point or another in their life.

Do you donate blood? If not, id urge you to do so. It's really not that bad. Only issue I see for some of you is that you cannot donate if you have had oral or anal sex with another man in the past few years. OHhurHurHur see what I did there?

Technology & Hardware / Home audio help
« on: October 14, 2013, 09:29:54 pm »
Anyone know much about home audio?

Parents are after an amp/receiver to play music through existing wall mounted speakers. Have tried to get some specs of the speakers, but have only been able to find out they are 120w max. There are 6 speakers across two zones. 4 inside, 2 out. Want to be able to play music to 4 or 2, or all 6 at once.

Also needs:
- Plugin for iphone/ipod/ipad/android devices
- Wireless playing of music from above devices
- Ability to plug into tv via HDMI
- Ability to plug into a CD player via RCA
- Downloadable app for apple and android devices that allow them to be used as a remote
- Speaker zones as above

Budget, approx $1000

Any ideas? Getting ready to go to Noel Lemmings or Harvey Norman to see what they want to sell us.

General Chat / Consumer advice: Retailer not playing ball
« on: September 01, 2013, 10:17:45 pm »
Hi,

So back in April I decided I wanted to buy some bits for my camera (filters, macro extension tubes). I checked shops and trademe, eventually finding a trader with a decent stock of items. I asked him through the auction if he could make an auction for all the items I was after, he said to do buynow on that one and we could sort additional items later (presumably to avoid success fees). I did this, emailed him what I wanted, had a look around his website, and ended up purchasing a bunch of items (Total cost $151.35). A few days later the items arrived, I looked over them, then two days after I had received them emailed the retailer asking to return a few of the items (but not all, and not the one the trademe auction was for). I wanted to return the items because I didn't like their quality, even given their price. In my opinion they did not suit their intended use. One of the items was a lens filter, which arrived dirty, which IMO does not instill much confidence in the product.  I gave him my account details and asked for him to email me his return address, this is where things started to take a turn for the worse.

He stopped replying to my emails, and then I left the country for a month. I continued to email him while I was away, trying to get his return address. Eventually I got it (while I was still out of the country). I told him I was away, and let him know id send them as soon as I returned. Once home I sent them. No more emails from him for a while, I kept emailing asking for the refund. No reply so I start to ask questions on his trademe auctions, he blacklists me, I email more and eventually he replies.

When he got the items back and eventually replied to me, he said all were in perfect condition with no problems. He feels a refund is no warranted because the time frame from me receiving the goods to returning them was far too long. While I believe I did everything I could to return them as quickly as I could, given being out of the country and him not emailing me his return address for two or so weeks.

Since then he has continued to defend the quality of his goods, but has now stopped replying to my emails. I will post up the emails at a later date, if anyone wants to read over them for more detail.

What id like advice on is how I can get my money back.
He is based in CHC, I am in AKL, so I can't go see him and ask for it. The amount is $94.35 which I realise isn't all that much, but still it is my money that he has and I have no goods. I have looked at going to the disputes tribunal, however it costs $45 to make a claim, plus the time to do it, so at the end of the day I wont really be getting anything back.

Suggestions?

So there was an update for Chrome recently that changed the way drop down menus appear, so they are all spaced out and shitty looking.

There is a fix for it here http://www.ghacks.net/2013/03/12/how-to-disable-google-chromes-white-context-menu/

Technology & Hardware / new tv - sony good?
« on: February 05, 2013, 07:33:53 pm »
Oh Hai.

Getting a new TV.

Really the only requirement is that it fits into the current cabinet, which is 795mm wide, 600mm high and plenty deep. Most 32 inch screens seem to fit inside this gap.

Looking at the Sony Bravia KDL32HX750, http://www.sony.co.nz/product/kdl-32hx750

Thoughts? Any other brand options I should be looking at?

Any specs it should really have? It will have a tivo connected to it, which does that freeview stuff from a standard home aerial. No Sky, just normal freeview tv.

A drama that blends science and spirituality to explore the hidden  connections which bind together all of humanity. At the center of this  distinctive new series is a widower and single father whose quest to  reach his emotionally challenged 11-year-old son will shape the destiny  of the entire planet.

Just finished watching the first ep of this. Its awesome. The first 20 mins or so are a little boring, but by the end of the first ep I am hooked.

Watch it.
