Sorry, do you want to call up GNS and tell them that their instruments are miscalibrated, or should I?

you come down and sit through them then. may just be numbers and letters to you looking online, but every shake is different.

cmon Jonty everyone knows RL experience is so overrated whereas everything online must be the truth ;)
I heard it was more like a 9 from my online resources

You mean those 'sensing murder' whackjobs?
Word of mouth told me that they apparently predicting a 9er to smash us. Apparently it was for today. I laughed.

Load of shit.

And yeh, 5 felt like more because shallow and close as (lincoln).
I guessed 5.2 coz yeh, logarithmic. Wasn't correct, but was enough for me to win the office sweepstake.

Also; I'm not saying that there definately won't be a bigger aftershock, I'm just saying that there's no way to know that there IS either. No reason not to be prepared though.

There was a poor guy painting the building next to us in a cherry picker about 5 floors high when it hit.
He looked super rattled, can't say I blame him. That would have been one hell of a scary ride!
Then about half an hour later the champion went back up and carried on!

Anyone know when earthquakes in the canterbury region stop being called 'aftershocks'? Is there a specific time or does it continue on until we have another major one?

It's probably whether they're caused by the main shock I would imagine.

Yes!

Was on tv tonight, once the shocks are no longer related to the region/fault that triggered, some one else said, "once the area returns to the state it was before the big quake"

I think the jist was they will be considered aftershocks for quite some time yet as the fault settles and the gaps are filled??

Everything outside of 'normal activity' (in our case, minor 1's and 2's that no one ever feels) is either a fore, main or aftershock.

Everything before the largest is a foreshock.
Everything after the largest magnitude is an aftershock, and continues to be such until we either have another larger one than the current main shock, or we return to 'normal'.

This might be localised to fault lines, iirc. But generally unless you're a geologist you don't care about this bit I guess. The ground moving is the ground moving. Not sure which is correct here.

It's a loose term describing activity, not 'gaps' ;D
