Honestly, just hit a delay wall due to a changing environment with the TelstraClear/Vodafone merger.

Not bad news, just put to the back of the list of priorities until it can be sorted out, still in contact :)

I'm sure the gaming community appreciates TCL's sponsorship Byron, I know I do, but we don't have blind loyalty to the brand just because they give us nice things. If TCL want's us to be able to recommend them as the best ISP in NZ, they need to start acting like they are the best ISP in NZ.

It's hard to keep recommending them when:

A: No large/unlimited data plans. Fast is good, but not when you have horribly low caps.. 150gb/month on a 100mb connection is just outright pathetic. Warpspeed plans should be like 500/month and unlimited at the current price points for 100/150. Not to mention HORRIBLY pricy data overages, no data rollover, etc.
B: TCL is consistently one of the last players in the market to drop pricing, and plan changes happen at glacial speeds.
C: You just got brought out by Vodafone, who are quite possibly the $#@!tiest, most customer unfriendly ISP in NZ.  They are also one of the few ISP's who are rated worse than TCL for performance by Truenet.. buy more bandwidth, and lower contention ratios, it's not rocket science!
D: Telecom are doing it better than you.. TELECOM FFS.. I should never be able to recommend Telecom to people, yet I can. Truenet has consistently shown TCL DSL plans as being amongst the worst in the country lately, and Telecom amongst the best. That's just $#@!ing terrible.
E: No VDSL plans (see also previous comments about large/unlimited plans)
F: No UFB plans (see also previous comments about large/unlimited plans)

Gamers tend to want shiny new tech like VDSL and UFB, and to consume larger than average amounts of data whilst still requiring best of breed performance and stability. TCL cannot currently offer ANY of those things.

Thanks for the extensive feedback Lias, appreciate it.

Working on many things that I hope will result in us being able to continue to secure you and others as customers, and ideally have you all feeling that we're service that you can recommend strongly.

Cheers!

Hey guys, I've received a couple of comments about latency to the WoT SEA server increasing over the last couple of months.

I've gone to look at the available transit paths, and it appears that all deliver the same latency currently; because of this, if you're unhappy with SEA latency I'd recommend making WarGaming knowledgable in their forums. http://forum.worldoftanks-sea.com/index.php?/topic/3805-australiannz-routing-issues-stats-required/page__st__160

If you are doing so, happy to hear about it myself as well.

Could you direct me to any advertising that you feel makes this situation unclear? We have made changes late last year to address this but happy to take further action if it is still confusing to customers.

Hi Guys

Anybody else having some awesome ping spikes on Telstra Cable, particularly Riccarton, Christchurch?  Doing some crazy $#@! with gaming.

Hey Massacre, I looked up reported issues and wasn't able to find anything specific.

I'd ask that you report a fault if this is a continuing issue, you're not the only one that has mentioned it but it is limited.

Seeing it this month in Wellington at the Embassy, taking Grandad for his 80th birthday and my dad is back in NZ for the first time in about 12 years so it's going to be epic.

Looking forward to the goblin tunnels moment where Bilbo finds the ring.

One of the main reasons I joined telstraclear was the "unmetered" steam downloads. Before I was aware of the HTTP distribution system i ran over my cap by ~30gb during the Steam x-mas sale of last yearthinking all my downloads were unmetered. I understand that the HTTP system is far superior to the old method of delivery but it seems deceptive to say that TC offers unmetered steam downloads when    most games are not.
I am on the 40Gb "best deal ever" plan and that suits my needs fine, apart from the few times a year i buy and download games, which run over my data cap quickly.
It would be nice if TC was either more lenient with their caps or if there was some sort of reservoir of extra data able to be used over the year for these large downloads.

Thanks for your time and i hope you will consider these things.

I may be able to help with bumping up your usage to another higher tiered pack for a discounted price if it's suitable to your usage habits yoip. I appreciate that the situation isn't ideal, we have worked very hard to clearly define how the unmetering of Steam content works in this situation but there is often a lot of confusion still. It's unfortunate that the system is changing for that purpose, but we are working to improve this with Valve.

If you want to flick me your account number in a quoted private message (just click on the little letter icon below my avatar), and I'll see how I can assist you further so that you're happy with the outcome :)

Cheers.

Yeah RuoskaNZ, you're correct, Valve intend to transfer practically everything by the end of the year.

The benefits to the user with patching, and the ease of delivering updates for publishers make the pros vastly outweight the cons of some users losing unmetered access for now in their eyes, and I'd tend to agree even as our usage offerings become more generous. Still... It'll be great if they can sort it out.

Will keep you up to date as I hear more.

You guys think there is anything we could do to improve performance for WoT? Happy as TelstraClear customers with your latency?

Saw someone playing it properly for the first time last week, got me interested.

welp, jewed again. teaches me for not reading the very very fine print.
was watching the download window like a hawk making sure that it had the TCL logo in the content provider window.
then wondered why I am at 100% with 2 weeks to go. turns out the red faction series is not hosted either.
the flatmates are not happy at all.

This really needs to be made clearer to customers, unmetered means unmetered... or so I thought.
At least have a list of the ones that are not in the server readily available.

Let me know how large the Red Faction download was and what you're account number is, I'll see what I can do to get the flatmates off your back.

I will work on an updated list for you sure. I think by general rule, you should expect mostly everything new to be released via the new content system however.

It's a superior system which works better for the user in many reasons, the only downside to a small group of users in our region of the world where data caps aren't unlimited and ISP's provide unmetered benefits, is that right now, our solution isn't compatible.

I'll revisit this and see what we can do so we can continue to get you the benefits you expect as a gaming customer.

In other markets (South Africa and Australia) where local Steam servers are popular, the majority of market players have steam servers which are unfiltered, and thus can and do serve HTTP content for the new CDN while having unmetering arrangements for their own customers.

Can you cite any evidence of this? I have spoken with Valve directly on numerous occassions about these challenges, and simply switching the server to a non filtered server was not raised as a solution or method to deliver HTTP content from our server.

Everything Valve have indicated infact servers that HTTP content only comes from their official master servers, and is not currently available using the third party content server software.

I'd love for you to prove me wrong however, as then I will have a new avenue to resolve this challenge and make things easier for our users.

Hi NZWonka,

No, TelstraClear's unmetered Steam Content Server has not stopped, however, Valve/Steam have changed the way that at this present time, roughly 30% of their total content library is delivered, which bypasses their own third party content server network (which TelstraClear's server is a part of).

This is unfortunate, but there are steps you can take as we have advised that prevent you from downloading titles which are not unmetered, and avoiding any unwanted contribution to your usage pack.

We are waiting on Steam to make some changes to their content server software, but in addition to that, we are looking at other options that keep it convenient for customers. I do not believe any other ISP in New Zealand currently provides the HTTP delivered Steam content unmetered, but if you are unhappy with the situation and felt you've been mislead, then please contact me further via PM and I will be happy to discuss your contract and the terms you joined us under.

Cheers.

Hey Jimmah, I'm sorry to hear it's an inconvenience for you.

I think it's going to be a critical mass sort of thing, unless Valve truely decide to take their content delivery methods down an entirely different route. They are unable to provide a timeline for any sort of change at this time, however, I am discussing other options with them for providing unmetered access to these http titles through other means.

We'll have to see how things play out on their schedule however.

Cheers.
