Technology & Hardware / any main stream shops selling the Go Pro Hero 4??
« on: October 07, 2014, 02:48:41 am »
I get back home to NZ next week, I have $600 of vouchers to choose from,  I still need to select s store,  like jb hi fi, harvey norman,  mighty ape etc. The Go Pro Hero 4 was released this week but none of the majors are advertising it (online at least)  some small places have it but I can't get the vouchers for them. Anyone have any inside goss? I see the hero 3+ hasn't had a price move either.

hmm, only 2?

Hey GSers.

As you'll see in my TM listing, I have purchased a low end Acer notebook for while I am overseas, I needed to write up some reports. Anyway, I'll be home in a few weeks and I will no longer have use for the notebook. If I don't sell or trade for it, it'll end up being a media server (i'll have to throw another few gb of ram in it).

It's only a few weeks old (purchased around 5th September from best buy in Mexico). It has a spanish format keyboard, which is good if you're learning spanish, bad if you don't know your way around a keyboard and need to icons to guide you (I have just loaded up the software for the eng/NZ keyboard).

Ideal uses
- will run MS office
- good for web browsing, youtube, netflix (if you have a DNS or appropriate ISP)
- emails etc

not good for
- gaming
- video editing etc

Unfortunately looks like someone has thrown the box out, but I still have the receipt.

So - if you have some gear lying around home, and maybe you want to provide this as a gift to someone? or maybe a small windows based laptop at home... give me a buzz. I am into mountain bike riding, so I am looking for a seat dropper with a remote on the handle, some diving gear to get me started or a go pro hero which maybe is collecting dust.

Includes a Kensington shoulder carry case, and if sold via GS, I will include the Dynex wireless mouse which I bought. Total purchase value as of early sept (include mouse) is about $450NZD.

ITT: I don't need to upgrade, I just want to tell everyone I'm going on holiday.

haha, i can see how that could have come across. My wife is from Mexico, we do the Auckland to Mexico leg every two years. I have done it enough now, that coming to her place in Mexico is just as exciting as flying home to christchurch... except it takes waaaaay longer. The novelty factor is long long long gone.

And to top it all off, it's hot, sticky, urban. I can't really go out for risk of kidnapping.

I am currently overseas and I'll have a rental car for a day while I drive from vegas to LAX. I won't have a lot of time, the drive is 4-5 hrs and I have 7 hrs to get from air port to airport. So i figured I'd go via a local pc parts mega mall or something and pick up some cheap components. which, from what I have seen, the savings is significant. I don't want to spend much, but I'm struggling to find anything worthwhile to spend money on.

here is my rig, I am actually pretty happy with it, but feel there is an opportunity to tweak it up a bit... i don't want to risk gst so will keep it below the $400nzd threshold

i5 3570k cpu
asus p8z77 mobo
280x gpu
2x 4gb kingston value ram ddr3 1333mhz
120gb ssd plus stacks of hdds
logitech g510 keyboard
shitty mouse - so will get a gaming mouse

at first, i thought the ram was a dead ringer to upgrade. but funnily enough, i've done some research and the cheap shit I bought is actually not bad at all. i thought of upping to 1600mhz or adding another 2 x 4 gb sticks, but i doubt i will see any tangible benefits (correct me if i am wrong).

another ssd is an obvious choice, so might look at another samsung 840 pro, but i like having a smaller ssd as it means i run lean on shit on the pc... plus i have the hdds to hoard on.

a monitor might be a bit bulky, but that is also a thought. any ideas on something i am missing?

Have the greens won an electorate seat yet? I find it a little odd a party which I guess you can say is big, doesn't strictly speaking have a standing MP based on a head to head victory.

In saying that, I guess they want to be focusing on national issues as opposed to local issues. So not a bad strategy.

Yeah they have previously, Jeanette Fitzsimons won Coromandel a few years ago.

ah true, forgot about her. I didn't mind her. In fact I don't really mind the top ones, I can't stand Gareth Hughes though, he really rubs me the wrong way.

Yeah wait for arma 3 epoch, if it ever makes it before stand alone takes over. Frankieonpcin1080p does a lot of epoch vids. Check em out if you haven't yet.

since 2012 and they don't have a community???

Yeah I noticed that, the forum is down. Not sure why, it's not very active. They are really active on teamspeak, so everyone uses their teamspeak channels, and the community of regulars is quite close - but via voip, text - almost non-existent.

DV - the arma 2 epoch mod has like the old bf2 community used to have (lots of regulars, strong server admins, plenty of ppl online - all the time). it's heavily clan based, lots of building abilities, plenty of epic battles. the SA is still alpha, and is (at the moment) very single player based. if you log off 15kms from your mate, and you want to game, it will be 30 mins before you can meet up. Epoch, you have a base, so you tend to log off at the base.

I'm not sure if SA will go down the path of epoch, i know Arma 3 are working on the A3 epoch mod, which could be a while away. SA is fun for a bit of coast smashing, but quite a different experience.

they need a market pricing system for courses. if you want to study some out there, useless medieval language degree, then you get less funding to go towards it. if we are in dire shortage of teachers, or engineers etc, then they are heavily subsidised and you're financially better off. i know they do that now with resources for capacity, but im more looking at the user pays system. like fairy said, the fact that her friend was studying with little hope, or extremely high competition, had he known better he might have chosen a different field.

the other thing is what they do in Aussie for medical immigrants (doctors etc). They have to go spend a few years in rural places before they are allowed to work in the larger cities. so if for example, teachers wanted to have a cheaper, or free education, then those that opt for that system need to go to the highest demand areas to start their careers, for say 5 years before they can work n the cities.

right now, it seems just too easy to waste thousands of dollars and years of study, doing completely worthless degrees, or having a decent degree but refusing to move out to the whop whops.

General Chat / Re: Shame on you PB Tech - your anniversary sale is a sham!
« on: September 10, 2014, 10:12:26 am »
When this happened I sent a link to the commerce commission.  I never heard back from them,  or so I thought until now!  I just linked them this thread and they obviously thought it was worth looking into. I think the response is fair and outcome appropriate.

Good morning Ben,

Thank you for the information you provided the Commerce Commission regarding PB Technologies Limited (PB Tech).

Since receiving your complaint, the Commerce Commission has met with PB Tech and have been advised that changes have been made to ensure that ‘sale stickers’ will now only be printed for discounted items.  Several PB Tech stores have subsequently been visited during ‘sales’ and no issues have been identified.

We have now completed our investigation and PB Tech have been sent a Compliance Advice Letter.  This letter informs PB tech of the potential breaches of the Fair Trading Act and provides information to assist them to comply in the future.

Buy, Sell Or Trade / Re: WTB: 1155 socket motherboard
« on: August 15, 2014, 08:21:31 am »
argh, i have just checked the compatability of my CPU (i5 3570k).

I can only use it with Q77, Q75, H77, Z75, Z77, B75 and H61 mobos. It doesn't look like the Z68 chipset will work.

TV, Movies & Music / Re: Igloo, anyone have an igloo box?
« on: July 28, 2014, 11:15:44 am »
I ended up getting one on Trademe second hand for $75. A little steep as they are $119 new (if you can find someone who stocks them). I wanted to pick up immediatley so buy now was the only option. $15 for the Crusaders match, came through in HD quality. Works perfectally for what I want. The major games assuming they are shown. Which, apparently they don't always show them, depends on what Sky TV want to give them.

TV, Movies & Music / Igloo, anyone have an igloo box?
« on: July 24, 2014, 03:15:06 pm »
I don't have sky, can't really afford it, but I am interested in Igloo as occasionally I'll be up to paying $15 or $20 for a rugby game or something. I certainly would never be spending north of $40 per month and most of the time I wouldn't be buying anything.

Has anyone got one? I see they are $119 to buy the unit. I'm not interested in the ongoing contract as the channels are useless to me. Any good?
