Title: Anime General Thread
Post by: Kayne on December 09, 2011, 09:54:56 pm
Anyone know any good one to watch? Not including Naruto, Or any anime thats on cartoon network (not including adult swim)

Just started getting into it. Finished watching Highschool of the dead, Elfen lied, Full metal panic, and Death note. Enjoyed them all.

Heard alot about bleach ( as in, i've heard alot of people talking about it, no actual "its good"), but idk If i want to, so possibly any others?

Cheers

Don't touch Bleach. First season was great, then it just falls into a pit of despair.

Grab Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It's Full Metal Alchemist redone due to the manga being finished. But it's not necessarily gory, although it has quite a few scenes that make you cringe.

Animated really well due to a healthy budget and it's not drawn out, every episode is full of action.

My top favs are:

Eureka Seven.
Xam'd; Lost Memories.
Evangelion.
Trigun.

Worthy of mention:

Casshern Sins
Afro Samurai

Movies worth watching:

Paprika.
Anything by Studio Ghibli (seriously, anything).
Origin: Spirits of the Past.
Evangelion (Purely because of the reanimated goodness).
Spriggan.
Steamboy.
Stranger.

Check out Anime-Planet.com. Plug in what anime's you like and then check out the ones that are related/recommended. You should be able to find some pretty decent series. A good rule of thumb is the best anime only have 20 - 25 episodes per season and only last 1 season, 2 max.

Holy shit, I didn't even think of anime movies. Cheers man. I'll definitely check out that site :)

Also I agree, An anime is kinda disappointing when its only 12 eps long, 1 season.

Forgot to mention i'm watching Higurashi no naku koro ni atm. The idea (from what i've worked out so far) is good but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere? Not going to spoil anything but yeah.

Ghost in the Shell.

Kenshin. Though it fell to bits after the main story arc finished... but that's common of almost everything out there. They finish the story then sorta just dump 'fillers' in until everyone loses interest. Usually becaue the Anime gets produced faster than the manga, so they have to make shit up until enough of the story arc gets finished to release another episode with real content and character development.

Code Geass - if you liked deathnote you will most likely enjoy this
Trigun
Cowboy bebop
Claymore

Plus all most of the others that have already been listed. Like retardo said bleach started off well but its another anime that is just dragged out far too long.

I highly recommend Darker than Black. Not extremely gory, but very adult themed. (and not the porn kind of 'adult').
Title: Anime. inc Action / gore / no cencorship
Post by: Kayne on December 12, 2011, 07:12:13 pm
Yeah Adult would be a good way to describe the anime I'm wanting.

Just to clarify, By Adult,  I don't mean hentai (Although nudity in normal anime is usually funny), but swearing + dirty jokes (@ nudity i just talked aboot), + Gore... They make it good.

brotip: learn to read subtitles and watch the japanese versions. english dub always ruins the story and the experience.

^ I was cringing through those clips because the japanese version gives a completely different vibe and makes it a completely different, much much better experience.

Actually I... ughh ... "recieved digital copies"... of the first 16 eps of FMA Brotherhood. The reason I haven't started watching yet is that I haven't "recieved digital copies" of the rest of it. I probably should start looking into that.

Animes I have but haven't watched are

^ FMA:Brotherhood
   Gants
Ghost in the shell (alllll of it)
   Trigun

aswell as a few movies that i got in a "digital pack"

5 centermeters per second
afro samurai
afro samurai ressurection
appleseed
appleseed ex machina
Blood the last vampire
FF7 advent children
Evangelion 1.11
jin roh the wolf brigade
Nausicaa of the valley of the wind
origin spirits of the past
Perfect Blue
Ponyo on the cliff
Sword of the Stranger
Vexile
Wonderful Days
My neighbour totoro
Ponyo

Quite a few days of anime to watch, and i'm still getting more

I also have one that was a recommendation for Elfen Lied, called Queens Blade. It's just medieval woman warriors that get their tops ripped off all the time. Sounds good but really its just shit, Unless you like seeing naked playboy girls with rabbits ears, that turn into hands that milk the girls tits in order to squirt clothe eating acid onto other girls.

...Yeah don't answer that.

It just didn't seem interesting at all to watch

I started watching Queens blade after hearing about it, but much like you after a few episodes found it wasn't that great. Seems to look to grab audiences just by giving every character massive tits and having their clothes ripped off every fight scene, actually not just fight scenes from memory.

You really need to watch Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion as well.

The idea sounds weird tho. A old man as a panda. A boy as a girl. What kind of long? The reason I don't  want to watch naruto was because when I first started watching 4 years ago on Cartoon Network, It was 15 minutes of naruto, 15 minutes of ads. And it IS stretched out. Badly, The first 5 minutes are a recap of the last ep. Just ugh. Got infuriating.

Ranma is good. It's a cult classic. It's what the elitist old schoolers will quote when talking about Anime.

It's incredibly funny because it's weird.

There's no real goal with the plot line. Every episode is a mess of hilarity and stand alone stories. It's about a dude who is cursed and changes back and forth between a chick and a guy when dunked it hot and ccold water. I forget which triggers what gender.

Anyway, it's "Anything goes martial arts". One episode was about martial arts that teaches you how to be a rich snob and eat without looking. That. Was. Funny.

His dad is the panda. Changes into one when he touches either hot or cold, again, I forget which one triggers what. Basically his whole family is like this, but with different animals.

I watched Naruto 10 years ago, but never ever watched the two years of fillers betwen Naruto and Shippuden.

To be completely honest: Naruto needs to be redone and by 'redone' I mean 'recut' with all the recaps and crap taken out of it. I will do this at the end of the year and throw it into the cloud. In fact: Naruto would probably best be redone in a style similar to how Full Metal Alchemist has FMA: Brotherhood.

You have to remember that it took 12 years from the end of Dragonball Z until DBZ became as famous as it is now.

By that reckoning, it will probably take another five years before the full impact of Naruto becomes apparent.

p.s I dislike FMA.

heh Really, Naruto was made 10 years ago? You learn something new everyday.

I'll admit that the last part of naruto I watched, was after his first boss fight. Where that umm... lets see if I can remember this... the shipuden eye?. The ninja teacher does his little eye trick for the first time, After that, I saw a girl at school dress up as kiba, and held a toy dog and kept talking to it, referring to it as "Akamaru" (yeah I googled names).

I stopped watching naruto after that..

but hey, maybe its gotten better?

Naruto began in 1999. The Anime was made in Japan in 2002. I have friends in Japan and they would stream it for me. It took absolutely forever to download them back on dialup in those days. I still have all the original Dattebayo/Anbu/Anime-One dubs from then including some RAWS.

Naruto originated from a 1997 one off comic which a friend of mine, who was an exchange student in Japan at the time, has.

You're not watching anime, you're watching ear rape.

I have to disagree with you here :P

If I'm watching something like bleach for example I wouldn't even bother if there was no dub, I want to watch the show not read the subtitles, it really annoys me - might as well read a book with flashing lights. Going back and forth between what they say and the actual image gives me a headache and that aint why I watch anime :P

Also, japanese voice actors are terrible - everytime someone offends their honor they half scream as if they're cumming, and their honor, or something along those lines, seems to get offended so much that the show is just like one japanese guy blowing his load for hours and hours. That's what I call ear rape >.>

I like anime just as much as the next guy, it's rather silly how people think they're a bigger fan for watching original japanese versions, really it's all got downsides, and I pick the one thats easier on me, after all I watch it for enjoyment.

But I'm sure someone will get all righteous on me regardless, oh well, so be it.

That's the style, it's how it's done. You'll get crappy ones like any others profession, they're not all good. However to blanket them all as terrible is not fair.

another messed up one is FLCL. same kind of randomness and amazingly weird.

i dont understand why some people feel so weird towards subbed anime. I enjoy it because the native tongue and emotions expressed goes well with the content of the anime which is very japanese in itself. It's like watching "The Raid" or "Old Boy" in english dub where the voiceovers are terribly done and simply don't express the culture which surrounds the film. majority of the jokes, expressions and the feel of the content can only be truely expressed in the native language.

Finished trigun (was kind of putting off the last 4 eps... They were kind of a struggle to get through?)

Him not killing anyone - > Aggrivating, hahaha. It was a good anime until the very last few episodes, It was like they decided to just cram the last few eps full of any unexplained back ground story?.. heh lol.

Now onto the 3rd episode of Code Geass. Hot damn.

Edit : You guys might be wondering why I update this thread every time I finish an anime, its because I'm hoping you guys will say "I just finished so and so and it was fucking awesome"

Finished Code Geass season 1 (Is Geass the name of the power they get? I'm just wondering because of pronunciation? I thought it was called a Kioss :P)

I'm very surprised you didn't say "If you liked death note you'll like..."

So very similar heh. Nah it was good, I would say I'm not happy with the ending butttt I have a season 2 to watch. :P

Yeah start of S2 has made me happy. Answered all the cliff hangers.

Shit I hate them cliff hangers.

Shit. I re read this whole entire thread, Just to be sure no one said that.

Shows how much of a good reader I am.

But season 2 is great :D, I don't like it when the main character goes crazy, and It seems they're normalising him a bit more. Sure it can be interesting, But all feelings i've built up around the characters just contradict.

Wow. 10 out of 10.

Thank you for suggesting Code Geass. The ending was perfect, Something I don't think i've seen in any Anime yet.

## spoiler is me discussing ending.. ##

You watch the series, as he deceives everyone with his plans, Hidden actions placed along the whole way.
But in the end, He shows his true form, as we too, along with every character in the anime, is deceived.

Sorry for sounding like a fag. But it was simply beautiful.

I really wish he could of lived 5 minutes longer, told everyone why everything happened. Why Euffie was accidently killed, What happened with Shirley, and what he really thought of Colin. Oh well. I'll never get to see that happen, as it would ruin the whole idea of the worlds hatred being all on him.

What has made this ending perfect the most, is the fact that I wasn't happy that he was a fucking loony bent mad on power. I see that he was sane, used his power for good overall... just wow. :)

The movie is just a re-hash of all the episodes but with a few changes I believe - If I remember rightly. Still bloody good though.

Eureka Seven holds a special place. It's one of those rare animes that gets under my skin and has me feeling depressed and displaced after watching it.

Ignore all previous writing here. It is just characters with different back stories pretty much.

Except now the Nirvash is actually a cute anime turned into the type zero some how.

The movies good. It's not as great as the series. Probably because its a movie. Def need to watch the series first.

Quite a few re used scenes (i'm not giving away any endings here, they're mostly used in different context)

Can't imagine the artist's being paid too well :P

I just got cowboy bebop. But I can't watch it, because my brothers shown me HALF a series of another awesome anime.

Deadman Wonderland.

I'm just going to say its good, No problems so far. I think its one of those things, (like Cell by Stephen King), Where if you explained a single bit of it, You'd ruin any mystery involved. You guys are just going to have to try it out based on my opinion on so far, its very good.

Contains gore, Tiny bit of nudity, wimpy protagonist that becomes good when hemad.

Also, Cell, By Stephen King. Good zombie book. Read it

Eureka Seven works in that respect as they tell you enough to keep you satisfied and only really leave the less important stuff unexplained so you're happy enough to draw conclusions yourself.

Good to hear that Deadman Walking has a second season. They have left stuff open that NEEDS to be explained, not just "we haven't explained it to make it mysterious". Like the relationship between Ganta, Shiri and The Red Man.

I've started watching the most pointless anime ever. And i'm loving it. It's cute. Yes, Cute.

I'm really a fag for it. Really am.

The idle conversations. That's all this show is. And I love it. I can't help it. I put my elbows on my desk, cross my hands together and rest my chin while I stare hypnotically at the screen.

Lucky Star.

Why do I love it? It has random CUTE moments, Like this. (inb4 loli, they're *meant* to be 17)

Watched Mardock Scramble: The First Compression and thought it was amazing. Got the Second Combustion last night. However it's gone off the deep-end into weirdsville (as most do) but has made a special point to not explain a single thing. You're supposed to just string along and nod your head and wait for the somewhat docile parts so the story can make a tiny bit of sense.

The Second Comubstion was a bit of a blow-out. Didn't really enjoy it. They spent their time being tedious with the story and little standalone events. The casino scene which took up a 1/3 of the movie was especially boring as shit. It was like watching an Oceans movie but without the humour, wit or underlying plan and with everyone having conversations with one another inside each others heads.

5/10.

This anime. Just makes me nostalgic, I used to be profag at Runescape, so it's like I already know 1/5th of whats happening. Its a serious action with a bit of romance (yes I know i'm a fag.)

I'm glad they didn't go the way spy kids 3D was, and actually did it like a proper MMO.

I'm actually liking the subs. Maybe i'll never watch dubs again. Who knows. But I don't know if its the quality of voice acting, or the fact that its a language I dont understand, but during the first ep, I kind of felt a bit more involved? Not quite sure how to put it. I've actually been avoiding that anime. I don't know why. I think it was because it got so popular on /a/.. Maybe i'm too hipster.

But going to grab it now. Cheers maaaate :)

Despite its massive following which can occasionally set off alarm bells that it's a shit anime (Bleach, One Piece, Naruto etc) it actually is a brilliantly animated and written show. Thick black lines which tells you they have a healthy budget, awesome music and well scripted fight scenes.

However it isn't free from your usual emotionally charged scenes where a character screams out in anguish with those racing lines and colourful backgrounds when all the character is doing is internally monologuing.

Holy shit I have not posted in this forum for a while.
Anyway I've watched a ton of anime this year.

These are the few last anime I watched, most of them were from the last season.

Free (http://myanimelist.net/anime/18507/Free!) - Shit story about swimming, heaps of gay moments in this one, and for the 2nd time the story was shit

Uchouten Kazoku (http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=17909) - Probably best anime in the season, good everything and yep this is the best.

Mushibugyo (http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=17505) - Average I guess, 26 episode shonen anime about mutant bugs in the old samurai day

Majestic Prince (http://myanimelist.net/anime/15863/Ginga_Kikoutai_Majestic_Prince) - Decent I guess, Won't bother watching again though

Right now since a new season is just beginning the only anime I'm currently watching are

Hunter x Hunter 2011 (http://myanimelist.net/anime/11061/Hunter_x_Hunter_(2011)) - Pretty much the best shonen series I've watched.

Monogatari Series: Second Season (http://myanimelist.net/anime/17074/Monogatari_Series:_Second_Season) - this and all its prequels are pretty good

Shitty biscuits.

I haven't watched any anime in a while. Reason being is I do all my movie/TV watching from my bed on my Sony 32". I can't make out the subtitles from the distance my TV is at so I don't bother.

I've got so many Attack on Titan episodes to catch up on as well...

Maybe one day if I ever get a bigger TV. But right now, for some reason, my Sony (that's coming up 5yrs old) just seems to get better with age, the colours are incredible now especially for watching animated shows.

Anyway, Long story short, I realised I like manga, where I thought I would hate it.

Does anyone have any Manga suggestions? ;)
I have a Manga suggestion! During the new years break with two weeks of no Naruto, I decided to branch out and read something different and just on a whim read this one: The Gamer

http://www.mangapanda.com/the-gamer (http://www.mangapanda.com/the-gamer)

The main thing that struck me, other than the hilarious artwork and story, is the fact the main character (and the writer and illustrator) are Korean! In fact, the main character eats Doenjang, which is freaking delicious.

There are only 20 chapters, so you could probably read them all in two or three hours. Probably longer because they're quite well done. Its about a guy with super powers, but his super power is crap: He sees the world as an MMO

A friend of mine sent me pictures from Auckland Armageddon 2013. There was a whole squad of people dressed up like the Attack On Titan people so I decided to read the manga.

I thought it was great, until the storyline started to disappear up its own arse. The "Titans dont eat people for food, they eat people to find the Human/Titan hybrids so they can advance"?
That sounds more and more like Bleach's hollows

Noein is probably the Anime that has stuck in my mind the most. It involves quantum mechanics and alternate realities. And has excellent artwork. And is brutal

Once Naruto finishes Im going to watch all of Once Piece. One Piece better be good, and not that kiddy shit like Fairy Tail; A giant dragon attacks them and the defeat it by holding hands?!? Walt Disney would be proud of that

Read : Fan service

Okay I lied, it's nothing to do with fan service.
Kill la Kill - Satsuki Transformation (Kamui Junketsu) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhOC5kREQS4#ws)

Don't deny it bitches, the uniforms are weakened by the shame the user gets from wearing it, which is a problem in the first few eps iirc.

I don't like Kill la kill, it's so alike to my most hated anime, Tengen toppa gurren lagann. Admittedly I have only watched... 8 eps? of Kill la Kill, and it may have gotten increasingly better since, but people say MLP gets good after the first 2 eps... but I don't plan on trying to seeing anymore MLP to see why that show is so popular either.
The amount of people that have told me that TTGL has the best writing and character development... I don't know, I just... So many people have said so, I'm starting to believe they are serious.

If you're on this thread and not watching it, I'd advise you take a look at movie 10: Strong World.
Like most anime, you just kinda have to roll with it in some places, but the charaters and story are pretty damn cool.

Um. It is a mockumentary. The people interviewed are employees of Gainax (the people who made Evangelion and this documentary).

I would have thought the guy at the end who was 'masturbating' to censored Japanese pornography while wearing his 'Anti-Censorship Glasses' that he made himself would have given it away.

The little text breaks with news from the different years was quite interesting, like the beginning of the Falkland War, and the Otaku killings of the 1980's

You know, I thought those glasses were weird, but then I thought about the old... "rippled plastic" lenses you used to get, and there were the cards / magazines that would appear normal when you put the rippled plastic lens over it.

I'm enjoying ghoul, Don't REALLY know why, maybe it's just something to watch. I was hoping it was going to be a serious psychological anime but it may just be another regular 12ep P.O.S

ESP, It's nothing great either, The first episode drew me in and the rest just doesn't have the same pace.

Because it's actually very common in Japan for people to kill themselves. You'll notice some train stations have railing, the ones that do tend to have it put in after x amount of suicides, not that it really helps.

I watched Naruto 10 years ago, but never ever watched the two years of fillers betwen Naruto and Shippuden.

To be completely honest: Naruto needs to be redone and by 'redone' I mean 'recut' with all the recaps and crap taken out of it. I will do this at the end of the year and throw it into the cloud
Dammit. The Anime still has at least five or six years to go, with filler taking up probably two years.

I should make a start next week
