I got the Onkyo TXNR626.  https://www.heathcotes.co.nz/products/txnr626-onkyo-av-receiver
Could go up to the 727 for a bit more power out and I think a zone 3 option.  626 has enough power for me, if I put speakers in the living room I can just do external A-B switch off zone 2 or separate amp off zone 2 RCA outs.
I am running a 5.1 in the lounge and a pair of Jaycar ceiling speakers outside.  Has an app (android at least - havent looked for Apple) Zone 2 you have to select individually rather than a Speaker A-B switch.  you can't do digital (HDMI) out of the zone 2 so my HTPC wont play outside but the internet radio, FM and analog CD player would.  (I am yet to find a way to get Digital and analog out of PC at once)  you can have zone 2 separate so the kids can watch a movie while you sit outside listening to Zeppelin with a beer in your hand.

At it's last service, my car got filled up with 10W30 grade oil.

I have half a container of 15W40 in my garage.

Is it ok to top up my car with this?

Should be fine, wouldn't mix a sythetic with a mineral oil is the only thing.

Well that was 10 overs of quality bowling by England at the start, 100 overs of NZ stuggling to be mediocre. (sorry 80 something overs)
Lack of depth, a couple of injurys and we find no amount of grit and good luck would get us a win.

I wonder if any of the tests will run 5 days?

Technology & Hardware / new tv - sony good?
« on: February 13, 2013, 08:44:18 pm »
Without looking too deep the Sony is better, Edge lit LED so thinner.
Samsung has a "Clear motion rate" of 100 = 50Hz + software
Sony has Motion flow XR400 which is either 100HZ or 200Hz + software
They can flicker backlighting and crap like that (don't know about that model) to try and solve the motion blur problem of the LED while creating a "soap opera effect" where the motion in the picture looks like the filming in a soap opera.

Sony is 3d so should have a higher native frame rate.

But look at the other things like how many USB/HDMI, do you want component or RGB for plugging existing stuff into etc.  Also input lag if you used it for Gaming

Just take chain saw to the cabinet and by a 50" TV

(My Sony LCD shat itself after 4 or 5 years, just got a Samsung 50" 5000 series mainly because it was on special and came with a free Xbox - is okay, lower range so doesn't upscale SD images well. )

Console / Xbox Kinect
« on: January 21, 2013, 08:47:10 pm »
Cheers Guys, Got Kinect sports 1 and my 5Yo son and I had a play this morning.  He can't throw the javelin yet but kicked ass on the hurdles and enjoyed the bowling.  Looks like it will be good.  Might have to get Dance central 2.  I'm sure the kids will love it. (An probably the wife as long as I don't find out)

Also got Farcry 2.  $19 at DSE so I can have a token shooter

Console / Xbox Kinect

So what are the good games with this Xbox thingy?  We got an Xbox Kinect with the new TV.  Kinect adventures (River rapids at the moment) is good, 3YO and 5YO enjoy it.  Just a bit short for it to pick up some of the low screen hand controls for some reason.  The Disney kinect game that came with the Pack seemed pretty bad in the 5 minutes I played, don't think the kids will care for it.
Really want simple fun games for the kids.  Anyone played the Kinect sports ones?

One day may get a FPS or TPS for it.  Managed to get this far with out a console so may just use the PC for Gaming.
Can play a few of my Steam games on the HTPC with the Xbox controller, GPU is a bit weak thou.

Takes you back to Coke vs Pepsi, The S3 I5 battle works for both companies, people have to choose which one to buy, nevermind the rest of the completion and the lower spec phones.
seems like there are huge profit margins in these phones.

Element 14 look to have these in stock at them moment for $48 + 23 for preloaded SD card and 13 for case.
Don't know if I can be bothered with it at the moment.  Have no idea of Linux and probably better things to do with my time.
Given time I'm sure there will be lots of good software developed for these.

Quite like the look of it.  Seems to be more of a netbook and I would like it better than an Ipad for work use, ditch the laptop and use it for reading manuals out of the office or emails away from base.
Happy to pay a little more for it if it has the power of a low end laptop.
What will break it is the apps.  unless they can tap in to the Android app market (which a while ago was pretty weak for tablet apps anyway) or have and Ipad emulator.
MS may have to cut the price and try and get a lot out into the market.

Looks like City have the Hardest finish playing Newcastle.  A draw there and it will be all over.  QPR, Swansea and Sutherland for there other games should all be wins.  Still 8 goals ahead on difference so it is theirs to lose now.
I will support City for this one.  Man U don't need another one.  Throwing a crap load of money at a mid table club seems to have worked.  They just have to win for a while other wise the banks will call their loans in.

Go the Chiefs!!  7 wins in a row. just a pity they didn't get the bonus point, then they would have had 3 times the points of the Blues.
The Cheifs seem to be doing enough to get the wins but not the 4 try bonus.
Poor old blues have got as many points from losing as winning.

I hope you supported Saints!! How long did you spend around those parts?

1 year 2004/2005 living in Warrington halfway between Liverpool and Manchester, working at Liverpool.
Supported Widnes, in the home stand.  Just when Sean Long had been banned from st helens for insider betting.

Widnes used to be a big club.  First ever world club champs beating Canberra raiders.  I just found out then they went bust in 2007 and have only just come back to super league

(back to the football :P)

Which just shows what morons some football fans are. You didn't hear 40,000 odd Chelsea fans disrespecting it, you heard 'a pocket' less than 1% probably which of course would have been easy as everyone else STFU, but hey who's counting? Sadly, no one. The Club has condemmed it, time to move on I think.

Hence the football factory reference.  No doubt there is an element out there looking to cause some grief. Good excuse now.

I can't imagine paying all that money to go to such a big event and then leaving early, there was a late goal.
Unless it is to avoid interfan abuse.

I never went to a football game when I was over there, but a local derby league game Widnes vs St helens (with a Widnes work mate), Maybe 10-15000 seat but cool atmosphere compared to a Chiefs game  Brass band and chants.  A lot more into the local team.

There is going to be a brawl for the final.  The Liverpool fans wont like the disrespect from the Chelsea fans in the minutes silence.  Don't suggest having a drink in pub in a Chelsea shirt by the Mersey.

^ You should have stayed up :)
I did and it was well worth the 6AM wake up call from the kids.... I only wish that there were a few toffee's on this here forum :)

Well I better make the effort to watch the final.  Happy to wait till the morning against who.

Don't mind Everton, be happy to have them win some silverware, they seem to hold in the top half of the league now.

Wondering if I should make the effort and get up after midnight and watch the FA cup Semi Liverpool Derby.
Except that the wife is away so the kids will wake me up at 6 am, and every time I watch a Liverpool game they lose.

Would be magic to go to a live game like that at Wembly

Was nice to have it on at prime time.  I had lost interest in F1 since it went to sky.
Looks like there could be some competition this season.
Be interesting to see how the DRS system works out.  A copy of the A1GP power boost, except they had reference engines so is a good way of doing it with aeros.  Quite gimmicky thou.  Should just give them a nitro canister each of a set size, then when they use it they risk blowing the engine as well.

Cool looking at the Vid Tiwa posted of the old Commodore 64 games, I had forgotten a lot of them, Elite was the one that stood out in my mind and Last Ninja for the SID music.  Commando was also one I played a bit.  Quake 1 on Dialup was where I started my online gaming.  250ms pings.

Battlefield / 2143
« on: December 18, 2011, 12:34:44 am »
They should do 2143.  2142 was a good game, just BF2 held a lot of the players. If they can get the engine sharpened up on BF3 they can make a cool game.  They don't have to be ashamed of doing a reskin, COD has make Millions with reskins and adding more kill streaks and perks.  2143 would be a bigger change and with a brand new engine.
Only issue is it splits the fan base so reduces sales, compared to COD buyers that seem to move on each time.

Looked like a good set of results over the weekend (for my liking anyway)  Except would have liked to see Mancity lose.  Slim chance of Liverpool catching them as MC have a couple of challenges with Everton and spurs.  Nice to see Liverpool now putting away some 'should win' games is a comfortable way.

Bolton are not that badly placed on the table, well done to them anyway.
An tomorrow hopefully Blackburn can smash Man City.

Just looking at the games coming up, final round looks pretty meh.  Biggest games will be for Relegation, thou I guess an upset victory over the 3,4,5th place could decide a CL spot.
