Hey team,

I now work for a small boutique investment advisory firm and have been streamlining a bunch of processes. Something I have done is creating a tonne of macros for excel, now I am turning my attention towards word.

Does anyone know of a decent website where I can learn about creating a skeleton template which can pull data from other word docs. For example, every month we write up a market commentary, which would then feed through to the master template on call, right now it is all copy and paste.

Having a quick look, it looks like an XML structure would be the way to go? I have basic knowledge in coding, enough to get me through and I can learn (and find) what I need. Plus I don't get too complex.

If anyone knows of a good system, please let me know!

Ben

holy balls.

It takes a 1gb cache, 50mb RAM, additional power and CPU resources but fuck me!

Not sure yet if it is beneficial, will leave it on for a week and see.

Today - after looking into the rapid mode.

Technology & Hardware / Upgrading ram - should i leave the old ram in?
« on: November 21, 2014, 09:56:20 am »
I currently have some kingston value ram, which has treated me well, but I'm looking at picking up some of this

http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=MEMGSK0361&qr=ec_BFS-B_56

PB have a sale tonight so I can pick this up for $100.

So, that being said, I have 2 x 4gb of slightly slower ram, is it detrimental to leave it in the system and run 16 gbs?

Creative Media / My GoPro Hero 4 - some footage of my recent Fiji trip
« on: November 09, 2014, 02:20:11 am »
I am not sure if I can directly link video. So here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mf1V3LpeStM

Was a work trip for the end of year awards. Great fun. Camera worked a charm.

edit - i am not having a good time getting the quality of the video that I want uploaded. For some reason the first 30 seconds is in low quality, 1080p isn't an option until a little way in.

Technology & Hardware / any main stream shops selling the Go Pro Hero 4??
« on: October 07, 2014, 02:48:41 am »
I get back home to NZ next week, I have $600 of vouchers to choose from,  I still need to select s store,  like jb hi fi, harvey norman,  mighty ape etc. The Go Pro Hero 4 was released this week but none of the majors are advertising it (online at least)  some small places have it but I can't get the vouchers for them. Anyone have any inside goss? I see the hero 3+ hasn't had a price move either.

Hey GSers.

As you'll see in my TM listing, I have purchased a low end Acer notebook for while I am overseas, I needed to write up some reports. Anyway, I'll be home in a few weeks and I will no longer have use for the notebook. If I don't sell or trade for it, it'll end up being a media server (i'll have to throw another few gb of ram in it).

It's only a few weeks old (purchased around 5th September from best buy in Mexico). It has a spanish format keyboard, which is good if you're learning spanish, bad if you don't know your way around a keyboard and need to icons to guide you (I have just loaded up the software for the eng/NZ keyboard).

Ideal uses
- will run MS office
- good for web browsing, youtube, netflix (if you have a DNS or appropriate ISP)
- emails etc

not good for
- gaming
- video editing etc

Unfortunately looks like someone has thrown the box out, but I still have the receipt.

So - if you have some gear lying around home, and maybe you want to provide this as a gift to someone? or maybe a small windows based laptop at home... give me a buzz. I am into mountain bike riding, so I am looking for a seat dropper with a remote on the handle, some diving gear to get me started or a go pro hero which maybe is collecting dust.

Includes a Kensington shoulder carry case, and if sold via GS, I will include the Dynex wireless mouse which I bought. Total purchase value as of early sept (include mouse) is about $450NZD.

I am currently overseas and I'll have a rental car for a day while I drive from vegas to LAX. I won't have a lot of time, the drive is 4-5 hrs and I have 7 hrs to get from air port to airport. So i figured I'd go via a local pc parts mega mall or something and pick up some cheap components. which, from what I have seen, the savings is significant. I don't want to spend much, but I'm struggling to find anything worthwhile to spend money on.

here is my rig, I am actually pretty happy with it, but feel there is an opportunity to tweak it up a bit... i don't want to risk gst so will keep it below the $400nzd threshold

i5 3570k cpu
asus p8z77 mobo
280x gpu
2x 4gb kingston value ram ddr3 1333mhz
120gb ssd plus stacks of hdds
logitech g510 keyboard
shitty mouse - so will get a gaming mouse

at first, i thought the ram was a dead ringer to upgrade. but funnily enough, i've done some research and the cheap shit I bought is actually not bad at all. i thought of upping to 1600mhz or adding another 2 x 4 gb sticks, but i doubt i will see any tangible benefits (correct me if i am wrong).

another ssd is an obvious choice, so might look at another samsung 840 pro, but i like having a smaller ssd as it means i run lean on shit on the pc... plus i have the hdds to hoard on.

a monitor might be a bit bulky, but that is also a thought. any ideas on something i am missing?

TV, Movies & Music / Igloo, anyone have an igloo box?
« on: July 24, 2014, 03:15:06 pm »
I don't have sky, can't really afford it, but I am interested in Igloo as occasionally I'll be up to paying $15 or $20 for a rugby game or something. I certainly would never be spending north of $40 per month and most of the time I wouldn't be buying anything.

Has anyone got one? I see they are $119 to buy the unit. I'm not interested in the ongoing contract as the channels are useless to me. Any good?

« on: July 12, 2014, 08:13:05 pm »
For some reason my 280x won't work in my PCIe 3.0 slot, so I have to put it in my 2.0 slot. Which is fine, except my motherboard can't fit in my case. So, am looking for a minor upgrade to a better mobo, but don't want to update chipset.

anyone have a spare lying around, flick me a PM.

Technology & Hardware / Help - telecom's huawai VDSL modem IP/DCHP issues
« on: February 04, 2014, 03:26:37 pm »
I recently installed the new Huawai telecom generic modem, but am having all sorts of issues with IP being assigned within the network. The default IP configuration for the new modem is 192.168.1.254. When it came out, the IP range was 192.168.1.40 and upwards (why it started from .40 I don't know?).

Previously, my modem was 192.168.0.1 and IPs started from .2. So, rather than set up a new network, I kept the same SSID and everything seemed to work. But there started to be some issues with the assumed IP addresses from the devices, all of a sudden they were operating off the 192.168.0.1 configuration. So I manually changed the IP to add the "1" in instead of the "0" and it worked. So I got sick of doing that, so I created a new SSID (rather than the old one), the devices STILL try and work off the 192.168.0.1 configuration. Now as far as the computer/apple tv/iphone/samsung galaxys are concerned, it should be a new network, yet all of them keep shitting out and unable to get internet access due to the IP issues. Which leads me to believe it must be a wifi router issue. In fact, come to think of it, I had the same problem over cat5.

wtf - anyone heard of this??

I am considering changing the network on the moment to utilise the 192.168.0.1 configuration instead. It just seems a little odd that I should have to do this.

Technology & Hardware / USB switch - anyone use one?
« on: January 28, 2014, 02:42:01 pm »
I have set up my work laptop at home with a docking station, I have an HDMI switch leading to my monitor so I can dual up the laptop. Next thing I want to do is cut down on the two keyboards and two mice(s?) and use a USB switch.

Does anyone have one? Any suggestions? What I want to do, is use my home keyboard and mouse, so I plug in my laptop into its docking station, hit the switch on the hdmi cable and hit the switch on my usb and I can sit down and go.

I'm not sure how it'll work with USB though, whether it causes delays while the USB unit processes the newly plugged in or be instant like the hdmi switch is.

General Chat / Shame on you PB Tech - your anniversary sale is a sham!
« on: January 25, 2014, 10:38:41 am »
As early as last week, I was stating in these forums how I was a PB Tech fanboy. No longer.

Today, I needed a powerline adapter so went directly to PB Tech, my regular North Shore store. I was aware there was a 3 day sale on for Auckland anniversary day, but wasn't expecting what I wanted on sale, but would check out other wares.

The store was just littered with yellow "3 day sale stickers". So out of curiosity, I wanted to see what kind of deals were available. I just lifted up the sticker to see what was behind. Of the approximately 1/2 I came across that had discounts, it wasn't much, but there was a price difference. But this got my blood boiling, how dumb do they think their customers are??

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/62/iem9.jpg

I bought this item on the 18th of January, 2014, hmmm, look how much I paid vs the big 3 day sale sticker.

The evidence.

No matter how many stickers I moved, the numbers just stayed the same...

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/834/g0of.jpg

I was getting angry, I should have taken photos with some items which were different, but it never occurred to me how rampant this was.

I am sifting through the fair trading act now, as I am sure that deceptive selling is covered by this behaviour. I had a word with the girl on the counter, being careful not to be an ass as it isn't her fault. But if no one complains, it'll continue to happen. Hence why I am posting here. I made sure all customers in line knew that the sale was not a sale, unless they boxed shit up and put it in the entrance.

Spread the word. Voice your thoughts.

Fuck you PB Tech.

Sales

In the mind of the ordinary consumer, the word "sale" means an opportunity to buy goods at reduced prices for a limited time.

There are many different types of sales. All sales, however, imply that a lower price than usual is being charged. Any goods or services a business promotes as part of a sale must be priced below normal levels. If a sale does not include stock already on sale or discounted, then this must be clearly disclosed. Likewise, unless a business clearly discloses that a sale is limited to certain products, consumers are likely to consider that most, if not all, of the business' stock is being offered at sale prices.

Businesses should also take care when promoting goods ordered specifically as sale stock. A business should not promote these goods using "was/now" prices, as they have not been sold prior to the sale.

Businesses must also be able to prove that how they have described a sale is truthful. "Liquidation" or "receivership" sales imply that the business running the sale is closing down. If a business advertises a "closing down" sale, with no intention of closing, it will breach the Fair Trading Act.

Example: A bicycle retailer advertised closing down sales at two of its stores but had no plans to close down either store. The retailer brought in extra stock for the sales and kept the sales running for several months. The Commission issued the company with a warning.

A sale represents a special buying opportunity and consumers often change their ordinary shopping habits to take advantage of such an opportunity. A sale must be for a short duration and only for the period stated, unless unforeseen circumstances lead to the sale being extended or shortened. If a business advertises a sale as "last three days of the sale" for several weeks, consumers would be misled about the opportunity available to them.

Bug Reports & Feedback / Custom forum colours - possible?
« on: January 19, 2014, 09:32:04 pm »
The colour scheme on my monitor is quite bad, it's really hard to disquinish between text boxes and the rest of the screen. It took me longer than I'd like to admit to see the quick reply box.

I had a look in the account settings but couldn't see whether I can change my own colours, is it there and I'm just blind? or not possible?

ta

Yes, I know I can adjust my brightness/contrast etc, but I'd prefer to leave it as is.

Battlefield / BF4 - what are you running? what is the performance?
« on: October 08, 2013, 07:04:15 pm »
We have a thread of this nature going on in our forums, thought I'd expand it over here. I am looking at upgrading my GPU and HDD, so looking to see what the best set up for money seems to be.

I have...

i5 3570k @ 3.40 GHz
AMD HD6850 OC (from the box)
8Gb (value) ram
Couple of HDDs (no SDDs yet)

Loading time is pretty average too, vary rarely getting into the servers before the count down.

I'm getting about 40fps on low/medium with massive drops to sometimes single figures (GPU is running at about 55-60 degrees). Not looking for solutions, just want to have a perv under the hood so to speak.

Buy, Sell Or Trade / Want to buy or sell: Radeon HD 6850
« on: October 06, 2013, 08:40:59 am »
Hi all, I am looking at either selling my Gigabyte radeon HD 6850 OC to upgrade to a GTX 760 or similar.

Or if someone else is looking to sell their 6850, I will be interested in buying.

Happy to be proven wrong, but I'm thinking $150 for the card is fair.

Message me if interested. I live on the north shore.

Technology & Hardware / Wi-Fi connection issue
« on: March 01, 2013, 05:14:14 pm »
Hi all,

I'm with telecom, I have a Netgear N600 adsl2+ modem router. I connect using the wifi feature. It's been really pissing me off recently, as the connection to the router just drops out (all devices, not just mine). I have no idea why, it then won't even let me connect back to the router, even though it is visible in the networks section. I've tried resetting my network card etc, but like I say, it's all devices which has the same issue (macs and PC). The only option is to restart the modem manually (as I can't connect to the network to restart using the onboard software). Even then, sometimes the internet connection doesn't kick in. So i'm left trying to manually switch the modem off and on until the internet light connects.

It's driving me insane. Telecom can't help as it is a 3rd party modem. Any advice? It has to be a setting issue with my modem, as opposed to a computer specific issue.

edit: also - we don't have a wireless land line phone. I kicked that a while ago as the kids kept on losing it and the battery would die. I don't think we have any other hardware which uses the frequency. I've changed the channel and reduced the mode from 300Mbps to 54Mbps. That seems to have reduced the frequency of the issue, but hasn't solved it.

General Chat / My trademe sale "near miss".
« on: February 26, 2013, 11:03:55 am »
Some of you may have seen that I am selling my PS3 on trade me. Thanks for all the questions...!

I've been using the "Pay Now" feature for the past year or so but no one has actually used it, until my PS3 sold. Sale price was $400 + shipping. The person who won it was a brand new user, which naturally rings alarm bells, but you gotta start from somewhere.

I forgot the auction closed on Saturday, so I get online on Sunday and see that my tradme account is in debit due to the sale, but my pay now account is in credit about $412. Cool, I thought, not so keen on the $8 payment fee and the $20 something dollar success fee, but what's done is done and I can format the drive and sell it.

I get an email from the buyer giving me the address etc and letting me know the address. All seems fairly legit. Quite possibly is, until..

I get another email from trade me saying. "you've recently sold via blaa blaa, we have been unable to contact the buyer to verify the transaction [dont send the goods]".

So I respond asking what is going on, the buyer has told me their account has been debited and my paynow account shows the funds. I then get another email (after a couple of days conversing wth trademe and the buyer) trying to figure out what is going on. Eventually, I get an email back saying they are unable to confirm the transaction has been completed by the account holder, removed the funds from the paynow account and refunded the fees and told me to relist.

Long and short of this, why the hell would I continue to use the pay now account, if there is no guarantee that when the money arrives into your paynow account, will stay in your account. I didn't send the PS3, however I thought I had access to the funds. They even sent an email (automatically I presume) saying the funds are in your paynow account and will be transferred in 1 or 2 days. Which just added to my confusion.

I don't know whether I'm being scammed or the person buying is just hard to contact, I've sent them my bank account details, but they will have to wait for the amount originally debited, to be credited back, then sent to me.

What a fricken hassle. On the bright side, if it does go through, I won't have to pay a success fee... If it doesn't they saved my ass. I'm not sure which yet.

Battlefield / Team work server.....
« on: February 16, 2013, 11:50:45 pm »
Does good old Dice/EA allow you to have a server where you can only spawn on the squad leader? (plus other flags of course).

Amongst all their retardation of killing any form of team work, I figure turning off the ability to spawn on any team member, might, just might mean that you get a squad that works together.
