Post by: Apostrophe Spacemonkey on June 19, 2012, 12:52:57 pm
MS are entering the tablet market with thier own tablet hardware.

It will come in two flavours, a lighter ARM based table, with Windows RT, which can only run ARM applications. And one with a Inter i5 chip, which will let it run the full version of Windows 8 Pro.

It comes with a detachable keyboard which also doubles as a cover, there is also a slightly harder, thicker, blacker keyboard cover.

Windows RT Version Specs

Windows 8 Pro Specs

The hardware looks good, question is price.

The keyboard that barely anyone will use.

It's the whole 80/20 thing, most people want a tablet as an angry birds machine/e-reader/status symbol. The fluff (like funny folding keyboards) unnecessarily confuses these people. Apple has that market cornered.

But for the business market - I can see these things taking hold, as good as Ipads are, there are a lot of things that they don't natively or easily support (apart from Exchange). We are itching to get our mitts on one of these at my work

...illustrating the 80/20 rule. Yes, for a minority of customers the extra features will be a major selling point, but for most they'll just be meh, and add extra weight and cost to the product.

Wait, how does that apply here? I must be looking at it the wrong way.
I would have thought that the people you described would form the majority, not the 20% causing 80% of the design features.

I agree with you though that the detachable keyboard will probably stay detached for the most part.

People barely use keyboards? That's news to me. Am I typing this with my mind?

Apple has the tablet as an angry birds machine/e-reader/status symbol market cornered.

This is a tablet that can run Word and Excell, and the full version of windows, and any program that runs on windows (included any windows based game), hence a detatchable keyboard is a usefull addition.

If a detatchable keyboard confuses people, then they are idiots.

Then it's just a touchscreen laptop. Sorry, but I just can't see this having too many points of differentiation from a laptop for a lot of consumers.

Who knows, maybe you're right about it catching on in business, but I'm not sure that the interface looks ideal for spreadsheets and shit.

I shall wear my lol smirk just for the early adopters, apparently it froze during the demo. I'm not interested in the arm one, the x86 one might be good for some highly mobile business clients. People that want the wanky shit for home are losers. As for competing with apple I expect the price will determine that rather than the merits of one or the other. As apple seem to made a vast fortune from relatively small sales I expect theres some room to undercut.

Quite like the look of it.  Seems to be more of a netbook and I would like it better than an Ipad for work use, ditch the laptop and use it for reading manuals out of the office or emails away from base.
Happy to pay a little more for it if it has the power of a low end laptop.
What will break it is the apps.  unless they can tap in to the Android app market (which a while ago was pretty weak for tablet apps anyway) or have and Ipad emulator.
MS may have to cut the price and try and get a lot out into the market.

I think the only real fail since vista is Windows 8 for Desktop (It'll still be sweet for tablet/phone)

I guess one of the reasons MS pushed the beta version of Win8 out so early is to get people intrested in developing apps for it. There will be plenty of apps by the time Windows RT is release, although no where near the same number as whats available for iPad.

Windows RT can't support any kind of emulation software, however from my experience it will be quite easy for andriod developers to code thier apps for Windows RT.

Windows 8 Pro will run anything Windows 7 can.

Guess you haven't used Win2k8R2 to do anything...

This tablet will appeal to a LOT of businesses as they are probably already considering using tablets, and now they don't need to change their application base from windows architecture. It's a no brainer really.

Surface has not just one, but two cameras. Use the front LifeCam to chat with the people that you care about. The rear-facing LifeCam is angled to 22 degrees so you can flip out the Kickstand and record meetings and events hands-free. Stereo speakers and dual microphones tuned for Skype help you sound like you are right next door.

Yes, running a full version of windows is what makes it revolutionary.

There hasn't yet been a tablet which runs a full windows OS that has been designed for touch.

There has been many windows tablets before, but they've never done too well because the OS was always designed for mouse and keyboard first.

Oprah recently revealed that Microsoft’s Surface tablet is one of her “Favorite Things” of 2012. Then, last night, she tweeted “Gotta say love that SURFACE! Have bought 12 already for Christmas gifts.” Interesting to note that the tweet was sent from an iPad. Below is a screenshot of the tweet from my Tweetbot iPhone app, which pulls in the source for each tweet.

I'll get one soon enough so I can have a play with it but i haven't the time atm. From what I hear it'll have to be jailbroken to run un-signed code, not sure if that's a surface thing or a Win8 tablet thing. It's trivial to JB them though and MS said they aren't going to patch and that the JBer did a good job and that they don't consider it an exploit but rather a "feature".

Anyone got one/jb'd it yet?

Microsoft Believes Peripherals Are Old News
Russ Pitts | 13 March 2010 3:16 pm

Citing the videogame industry's birth in commercial arcades, Microsoft's Eric Havir suggests Surface may be just getting started taking over the game industry. Already installed in a number of venues around the world, including the Palms casino in Las Vegas, Surface allows users to play by touch, using off-the-shelf processor and infrared camera technology. In addition to casinos, the Surface is landing in educational institutions and in hospitals, helping victims of head trauma and other injuries regain motor control through gaming.

According to Microsoft's Surface Game team lead, Gretchen Richter de Medeiros, gaming accessories and controllers are the biggest "barrier to entry" for a large potential gaming audience.

The 'barrier to entry' is the fact you are a huge, multi-million dollar heartless machine

what is a surface???

is it a cheap laptop with shitty rez, or expensive tablet with shitty rez and no dlna?

I thought the Galaxy note or whatever thier tablet is would be better value? (tablet not cell).

The only thing I see surface having over ipad is a USB port.

I get the hype behind the S4, google nexus and those things. They are market leading pieces of hardware. Top of the line specs etc.

I just see the surface as this too late missed the boat OP piece of hardware. Specs wise next to a ipad and galaxy tab etc I just don't see the excitement???

What's so amazing about it?

Surface runs Windows RT. Which supports new windows 8 apps (metro ones). So in theory you can run your same app set on the desktop and tablet. Someone has even cracked the thing, so it can run full blown desktop apps (RT is supposed to be a close port of windows 8, but ms stopped pre win8 desktop programs working).

EDIT: Seems i got that wrong. Surface pro is available with windows 8, so supports third party stuff off the bat.

That's what smartphones are for imo, if you are trying to be seriously productive on the move you are doing it wrong.
The only thing you can't really get done on a smartphone well that you can on a tablet is watching movies and looking at pictures.
If you are going on a plane or a long car/train journey then sure its nice but given how often most people do that is it really worth $500-1000 to you?

I just don't see how a tablet is that much different to a small laptop as far as mobility is concerned, I can't fit either into my pocket so I wouldn't want to lug them around day to day.

When I settle in for a titanic shit, I have to spread my legs and plant myself firmly to the bowl and adhere myself to a position which I wont easily move from.

Using a laptop in this scenario is impossible because I have to have my legs closed in order for it to rest upon my legs. Closing my legs seriously diminishes my shit busting power.

I can accomplish powerful turd hammers with what I call a 'power-stance' when at the porcelain throne, and I can get this done by being able to hold a tablet in one hand, mid air because everyone fucking loves surfing and shitting.

And if you don't, you're a god damn terrorist and you deserve to die.

I meant the surface in particular with its support for x86 in work environments, so you can run specialist apps. I think it would be pretty useful for engineers/electricians who often have to wire up directly to devices to set them up, and they are usually in locations that don't really do too well with a laptop. That being said the price point is fairly high for this added convenience.

In regards to this whole using a tablet to watch movies/pictures/web. Who the hell would pay $500-1000 for that? I got my tablet for 190, and that was dualcore 720p IPS screen. And if you were someone who didn't care that much about res/cpu speed, you could easily pick one up for closer to $100.

The iPad is nice as a general purpose replacement for consuming media, small documents, emails, Skype, managing servers, browsing the interwebs etc because it is so portable and the battery life is insanely long. I personally load the tablet up with movies, music and buy a small data pack when going down to the bach for the summer. With a laptop you have to either sit, stand or half lie down half sit but with a tablet you can be in pretty much any position you like.

I have no real reason to keep the netbook at the moment as the raspberry Pi has been a very good replacement for coding. If anything intensive needs to be done I can use my gaming desktop. My mates have been sinking between $1000-3500 on notebooks when I got the iPad 2 64GB + 3G for $1000 on the Playtech Boxing Day sale. Tell me which is more cost effective? Bear in mind that they could get a surface pro($1200) if they wanted Windows or they could get a iPad mini($479) if they wanted to do simpler stuff.

Not a bad device. Not dualcore, nor 3g, nor HD screen. But give that to most people who just want something basic (browse web, watch movies, read pdf) and it will do the job. Really though you want to be looking at the $160ish mark, to get the dual core 1gb ram HD screen.

Also nice job cutting out the words closer to $100 (as in a about $100-120).

The majority of people buying notebooks are paying $1500, an android tablet or the cheaper iPads can be a third of that. I got the most expensive model(because I need the 3G and 64GB) which was at the time $1200 ish so for $1000 it was a steal. Most people would only require a 16GB wifi only tablet, they only need it to browse and type occasionally.

I am not a fanboi, have an android phone and had an android tablet. I find the play store apps aren't as refined but it is open, iOS would be useless to me without a jailbreak and the devices have more support from devs.

But by switching to other platforms you lose any advantages iOS has, through jail breaking I can have all the benefits of the platforms. Until Android tablet apps become significantly better and it stops being so fragmented it would take days for me to get it exactly how I want it(been three weeks since I got my android phone and I still don't like the configuration). Jail breaking and installing all the tweaks I want can seriously take 10 minutes or less.

Only a select few were actually made for a 10" form factor and ones that weren't just stretched and looked hideous.

However, It's been a while and I'd hope devs have made their apps workable for the small and bigger screens.

I know, the cost does put me off it. It's the support from developers I want not wether it is popular or not, it just happens to be that developers like money and so will develop for the more popular platform. I do not buy products for status otherwise I wouldn't be looking at headphones that are not beats by dr dre. For the last time I do not want or need a 'proper' mobile computer, tablets have the benefit of lasting entire days without charging, are light, able to complete the day to day tasks, are more comfortable to use in any position and I have my desktop which is my 'proper' computer.

The surface pro does MASSIVE support in terms of apps it runs but wether or not Microsoft cans it or not depends on wether it sells more than the Kin. I will probably wait for it to come down to $750ish.

Continue trying to troll berg, takes a lot more than that to annoy me.

Minutes later I was standing on the surface of Mars. The car-sized Curiosity Rover was just feet away from me, real enough to touch. All around me were spectacular Martian rock formations. I squatted down to take a closer look at a collection near my feet. All that was missing was the ability to pick up one of these stones and toss is over the ever-watchful Curiosity’s head.

Earlier, a pair of Microsoft representatives had gingerly placed the HoloLens dev gear on my head, reminding me not to touch any of the exposed technology on the front of it. Before my eyes a thin blue line outlined a rectangle. In its center was a Windows logo. The technician worked with me to position the headgear until I could see the whole rectangle — which would allow for an optimal experience.

Before this, they had measured the distance between my pupils with a special device straight out of an optometrist's office (future HoloLens will do this measurement on their own). They used this measurement to preconfigure the HoloLens and then asked me to push my glasses up against the bridge of my nose so they wouldn’t be in the way.

Now, the technician was tightening the HoloLens on my head. The headgear made a clicking sound that I initially mistook for my skull cracking The headgear made a clicking sound that I initially mistook for my skull cracking — it was very tight. But I could see the whole square and was ready for my Mars experience.

The pressure on my head soon gave way to sheer wonder. Microsoft worked closely with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to develop the OnSite Curiosity experience software. The goal, they told me, is to revolutionize how JPL scientists drive this mission and how they walk about and explore the Martian surface.

I saw more actually useful applications for HoloLens in that short video then I have seen for Google glass since it was released.

Being able to represent a 3d model while working on it would be great. Google Glass is monoscopic so it is of no use there.
