Title: Dial-Up speed
Post by: BerG on July 03, 2013, 12:27:07 pm
Out here in the mountains, ADSL is not available so I only get 8GB per month for $160 dollars on a 3G modem.

I'm a bit sick of paying this so wondering about switching to dial-up. The main thing I want to do is download podcasts which are are about 100mb per day.

Having not used dial up for over 10 years, would it be fast enough to download the 100mb in a day or preferably a few hours so I can download them first thing in the morning then have the computer free for browsing occasionally during the day? I really cant remember.

Actrix costs $50/month for phone line rental which includes free unlimited dial-up so could work out much cheaper if I abort my mobile calling plan as well.

Not to mention, my internet used to be $80 for the first 4GB then $30 for the second 4GB, but Telecom recently changed it to $80 for the second 4GB, so I really just want to ditch the fuckers all together.

I think most people here were not even born yet when Dial up was around.

Have you looked at 2degress? They have 12GB for $99, on a prepay plan.

Which mountain do you live in? Mt Cook?

Unfortunately I only have telecom reception. As Paul Reynolds will tell you, XT works anywhere.

100mb will take 4-5 hours straight, assuming a fullspeed 56k connection with no line noise, cutouts, etc. (not fucking likely in a rural environment)

Have you looked at wireless, eta on RBI, etc?

You should start your own school. Then the government will roll out fibre to it.

I already own and operate the BerGStroM School of Bodybuilding and General Manliness, does this qualify for the school broadband initiative?

In fairness to Telecom, I just called them to enquire on a few things. The guy was extremely helpful, and broke my contract to put me on a far cheaper plan without me even asking, let alone becoming increasingly violent and destructive.

The plans I was on were outdated and the newer plans I'm on give me more data for much cheaper.

Very happy, kudos Dan 'the man' at Telecom.

Lias - your math is slightly out.

Dial Up - 5Kb/s
1Mb = 200 seconds (3 1/3 mins per Mb)
100Mb x 3 1/3 mins = 333 mins / ~5 1/2 hours @ best.

Some dial up providers do offer compression on the Dial up service (I think Orcon did/does) which can 'increase' the speed (it doesn't really)

Noel Gallagher   ...   Himself
Sean Parker   ...   Himself
Mike D   ...   Himself
Billy Corgan   ...   Himself
Shawn Fanning   ...   Himself
Chris Blackwell   ...   Himself
Seymour Stein   ...   Himself
Lawrence Lessig   ...   Himself
Hilary Rosen   ...   Herself

Even Chess was deemed to violent a sport.
