Sports / Fitness / Ingress
« on: April 03, 2014, 12:41:39 am »
The world around you is not what it appears.

Since we're all gamers and some of us like exercising too, Ingress may be of interest to you.

Ingress is an augmented reality territory control game. You take control of portals, reinforce them and link them together to create control fields, which earn your team points. It's fun if you're casual or competitive and it's a great way to encourage you to get more exercise because you'll just get that one portal over there. Ok, no just one more over there so I can make a field. Yeah, just another one.

And the most important thing, especially if you are in Wellington, join the Enlightened (green) team.

Sports / Fitness / Fitocracy
« on: February 03, 2014, 09:43:28 pm »
Fitocracy is a workout tracker that provides a whole heap of shit that gamers like. You earn points for workouts, get props from your budz, earn sick achievements and even go on fitness related quests. You can track this via the website, or on the mobile app while you are gyming it up (I find that racking weights and adding notes or changing numbers on my account gives me just enough breathing time between sets). It even lets you set routines, so if you have a complex workout schedule you can just select the day's workout and it prepopulates the data you need to know what you want to hit. Then, when you get home, you can tweak that routine if you found it too easy or too challenging.

Really, it's just a way to encourage you to exercise more by exhibiting the pressure of your peer group. But you know what? It's pretty fun. You get to track your lifts over time, so you easily see when you hit new personal records. Working out hard and getting a new level feels better in this than in most video games. And it's another place that we as a forum can have fun together.

The above link is my referrer link, so you will auto be my friend when you sign up (you can then unfriend me, you hateful animals). If enough people do (say 5), I'll create a group for all the Getsomalians so we can easily work out on being the most boss men and women we can be.

More people need to leave comments with the rep they give. Also, do we have a Rep League Table yet?

Intellectual Discussion / The State of Reporting in New Zealand
« on: January 24, 2014, 03:55:19 pm »
I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE! Reading Stuff is just depressing. The reporting is so exceedingly lackluster and many reports seem happy to just parrot an official line without passing even a mildly critical or analytical lens over the issue.

For example, this article about contactless payment technology stirs the hysteria around this technology still further. It complately fails to mention that this report has dramatically reduced levels of fraud (both in terms of number of fraudulent transactions and amounts) on stolen cards. This, along with the technologies ability to make transactions fasterand give a better customer experience, is one of the reason the card schemes are pushing for it. It fails to address the underlying cause of the criminality, nor give any consideration as to how this could be avoided. It's the barest of bones reporting, hardly even covering the who, where, when and what, let alone the how, why.

So to reiterate: I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!

Sandbox / Starbound

Is there any chance of getting a Starbound server set up? From running one on my own PC it seems lightweight enough to sneak onto just about any box. If not, anybody who wants to play after the next reset let me know and I'll get my server back up and give you the deets.

Bought a four pack, have two spare. Who wants? Price for 4 pack is $44.99USD so  / 4 I'm guessing around $15NZD all up.

Technology & Hardware / Twitter Clients for Android
« on: March 24, 2013, 09:13:51 pm »
Hello friends.

With the death of Tweetdeck I require a new Twitter client for Android. There are many out there, but I am yet to find one that does what I want. The difficulty is finding one that will automatically stream new tweets to my phone based on a search query. I also require the client to obviously show me which "column" of Tweets (in Tweetdeck parlance) has been updated and has unread tweets. Ideally, I'd also like it to show a notification icon that a tweet is waiting in the specified column.

Does anyone know of such a thing? Janetter is the closest I have found, but the updates it runs do not seem to be anywhere near realtime (no out-of-app notifications for search columns and 4hours+ before the in-app notify lights up to show new tweets are waiting).

Thoughts?

Technology & Hardware / DTS Nearly-Unlimited ADSL2+/VDSL
« on: January 08, 2013, 05:26:09 pm »
DTS have reopened the plans that Ghost and I are using. Long story short, the only traffic you get billed for is international downloads 8AM to 5PM on weekdays. To put this in perspective, on ADSL2+ we were pulling 1TB+ usually. On VDSL I just finished my first month at just over 2.5TB. For a flat, this deal is fucking bananas good.

Note that the prices below don't include GST.
