Budget under $1k

General Purpose:  Kids tv, needs to be tough as they have already smashed a 37" LCD

Requirements: LAN (Ethernet) connection, DLNA

http://www.dicksmith.co.nz/product/GE3523/panasonic-50-quot-127cm-hd-plasma-tv-th-p50x50z

this TV covers most of the bases and being plasma hopefully will be a little more kid proof.  it isn't full HD or have much in the way of Smart TV capability.

is there any difference between the TH-P50X50Z and the TH-P50X50

opinions ?

Cool, that looks like a good TV for that price.

So are plasma TV screens more resistant to damage?

Don't see much point in Smart TV's in NZ. Too much content restrictions in NZ.

The glass panel in a plasma is tougher than a plastic LCD panel at least.  As for the SMART TV stuff, onboard skype would have been nice but meh

glass panels in plasma's reflect ALL of the light in the room, it's a major pain in the ass.

Agreed however the location of the screen will be towards walls so hopefully it won't be too bad reflection wise

You will see the walls, when the sun is on the walls, you will see the walls, when the light is on, you will see the walls.

And now that I've told you this you will always see the walls and every time you watch the TV you will think to yourself "Bounty was right....all I can see is the walls" you will start seeing the walls in your sleep, when you're commuting to work, when you're at work, when you look out of windows you will see a reflection of THOSE walls.

I'd say you're better to go with an even cheaper LED/LCD to throw in the lounge, then maybe buy a 28 inch for the bedroom? I dunno what your TV (porn) watching habits are like though

I do like the fact that LCD/LED screens reflect very little. Much easier to look at.

I noticed my Laptop screen tends to be much more reflective (because it is glass?) and can be annoying, however I can easily change the position so no big deal.

Yes, don't use sandpaper. Good advice.

well its all up and running however the USB connection has frequent overvolt failures  especially with older portable drives, lucky they are only a backup as the tv is connected to the home network via Cat5e

the media server works quite well although won't recognize some audio streams from .mkv's

the reflection issue......is real and all i can say is thank god the panel points towards a neutral tone blank wall. no problem at night though
