Title: Elite - Dangerous
Post by: Lazza on November 06, 2012, 10:20:16 pm
Anyone who remembers the classic game Elite from the old skool 8 bit computing days might like to know that Kickstarter have a development page up for a remake of the game...

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous?ref=live

For the uninitiated, at Kickstarter you pledge money but don't pay unless the project is completed (EDIT: you pay on Friday Jan 4 2012 if the target sum for the project is reached). In this case a £20 pledge not only goes to the development fund, but entitles you to a full version download on completion of the game. So there's nothing to lose.

For those who don't know about the game, it'll be something like a mix of Privateer and Eve Online, but with a very heavy emphasis on combat and infinite re-playability (unlike those other games).
All support appreciated.

That's not true.

You don't pay unless the target amount is reached. (After all they'll need the money at the start of the project, not once they have completed it).

Elite is one of the best space sims ever made, and maybe the first type of sandbox style game? Anyway, it was the first game I ever really played to death. God the hours I spent perfecting docking with those space stations until I saved enough to buy a docking computer!

Loved it.

Aah yes true. Sorry about that I didn't intend to mislead.

It will be awesome if they pull this off.

Unfortunately I missed out on Elite, bit before my time (it was release the year I was born). But the concept fascinates me.

I was a big fan of Freelancer, but even Freelancer was quite limited in scope compared to Elite (It just had very pretty graphics)

Pledged! This looks awesome. A sandbox space sim with true Newtonian physics, I bloody can't wait. Love the idea of heat building up during long fights allowing greater visibility to opportunistic pirates.

I hope they make trading as viable as pirating. In the original Elite it was too easy to buy scoops, look for an Anaconda class freighter and make it pop, then scoop up the cargo and sell for profit. Would be awesome to have a team of three peeps working together, one in a freighter and two others in fighters for escort!

No. I played elite, and frontier, and frontier 2. The concept is now crazy old and done a dozen times over and better. It actually is too late, the game would simply blend into the already overflowing genre. Elite, bounty hunter, pirate,  miner, trader, or courier. There are free to play games already, that are multiplayer and have all those bases covered with much deeper ship building complexity. ie Evochron mercenary

I remember playing wing commander: privateer, that was a great space sim.

No, a game like Senet, now that's crazy old having been played for nearly ca. 6,000 years now. It's also an overflowing genre with copycat variants such as Backgammon being a mere ca. 5,000 years old. The inventor of Backgammon probably sat there thinking this is gonna be an epic fail, the board game genre is already overflowing.

I am exicited for this game. There are not many games in this genre. And nothing that stands out recently.

I hope they make the Kickstarter goal, they are half way though the time (30 out of 60 days), and half way to thier target.

I think they set thier Kick starter goal too high. £1.25 million pounds is pretty high. They only have 18 days left and still have almost half a million to go (that's like almost 30k a day).

750k would have been much better. It would still give them a good head start on the game. Also, they should have made the digital copy of the game cheaper. Since an amount in UK pounds is like twice as much for anyone else.

All very well, except comparing an old board game, to a modern space combat computer game because they both share the word 'game' doesn't really take into account the change in audience, or other factors like competition. David Brabens current reputation, his companies current financial situation, or the fact they just laid off 14 people, before the project even gets started.

Good news. They made thier target.

NZ $2,675,623 will give them a good headstart on the game.

On a scale from Pong to drunk neuroscience, how impossible is it to get into this game if you've never played a space-sim before?

Asking for a friend...

I would also like to know the answer to this question.

The concept of the game sounds really appealing to me, but I only have limited time to play games, so I don't want anything I have to sink a lot of time into.

Asking for a friend...

to just climb in and fly, not bad...

advanced combat with flight assist off - steep learning curve,

then comes trading, Powerplay (politics system)  and bounty hunting / community goals..

but you can just bumble around doing your own shit.

the biggest curve is actually deciding how to control your ship, alot of people do use mouse and keyboard, i however invested in alot more since i am big into the space sim games.

I started by just bumbling around and shooting pirates a bit, then i wanted to make real money and do stuff more than go here shoot this grind, so i tried trade grinding by literally hauling cargo around..

now i am bored grinding so i am looking at doing the politics system expansions jobs and the community goals (story mode) where player combine to do story orientated tasks like cleaning out the pirates blocking medical supplies to systems which means you cant trade or do anything in those systems till its cleared.

Planetary landings is coming soon as well,  basically they are beating Star citizen to the punch with releases

i'll clean this up later with better explanations at the moment just at work so quickfiring.

not pong simple, more like 1st grade maths for the basic game.

close to university neuroscience if you were to try take all the available modes and things at once.

Eh. Think I'll pass.

The current breed of space sims seem to be "do real life, but in space!!!!". Grinding, monotonous tasks.
