Title: Multiple Monitors
Post by: The Demon Lord on January 24, 2011, 11:03:59 am
Hi All,

I need to setup a multiple monitor setup for a work PC,

has 4 screens setup like so:

Mon 1   Mon 2

Mon 3   Mon 4

now I am a thinking that I get a dual head GPU and get a DVI splitter cable and have monitors 1 and 2 on one DVI cable, and monitors 3 and 4 on the second

would this work?

nope - as the splitting would show same image on Mon 1 & Mon 2 / Mon 3 & Mon 4

To get 4 individual displays you would need multi-gpu (4) outputs.

I run dual 24's here @ work off one GPU - could sticka  2nd GPU in the box and run another 2 off that.

Alternative is an external adapter (matrox ?) to do it. like - http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/th2go/

its more like the top one,

its actually for a Mini NOC that the company I work for are doing, we want 4 screens to be tied to a box that is logged into our network monitoring software.

Screen 1 would be servers,
Screen 2 would be WAN links,
Screen 3 would be customer WAN links
Screen 4 would be the one we use for checking stuff of interest

with the DVI splitter I thought you could tell it to stretch an image across both screens? or is that not possible?

DVI Splitter = same image on both screens.

found what I was thinking of - its not a DVI splitter - its a DMS 59 cable to 2 x DVI outputs that I was thinking of.

Next question - anyone know where to find a gpu with that output that isn't silly price....

Just buy a cheap 4550 with dual outputs $79

or from the Green Camp $89

i've never seen that output, good luck finding it. prob find it on a workstation card if anything. those are expensive

any chance of running the two cards?

I don't think those cards (VGA, HDMI and DVI out) actually allow you to have a monitor on each output, from my understanding it is all 1 output as far as the card is concerned only 3 diff connectors,

ATM I am looking at all options but trying to do it cheapishly, one option is to get the business to buy my 2 old 4850's which will work (two outputs per card) but even that would be $$$

you can use two at a time out of the three (at least thats how it is for my 5450), you may have to choose between DVI and HDMI, but the VGA should work with both. do the monitors have VGA per chance?

I saw that output for 1st time on the weekend on a HP Desktop - outputs were labeled 1 & 2 -http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13364_na/13364_na.PDF

5670 definitely does dual outputs.

Looks like - http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=300/ID=14590/SID=21274405/productdetails.html  $110.00 will also do teh jobbie.

All of our workstations here have an nvidia quadro with a single DMS59 output (so they can have up to two monitors)

no idea where the cards come from though, they are pre-installed with the PC purchase

Four screens can be done with one 6950/70 (2x DVI,2x mini dp) and theres a 6 screen version of 5870 (6 mini DPs).

Theres even a version of 5770 that will do four http://vr-zone.com/articles/sapphire-hd-5770-flex-four-displays-in-eyefinity-three-dvi-monitors-possible/9595.html (http://vr-zone.com/articles/sapphire-hd-5770-flex-four-displays-in-eyefinity-three-dvi-monitors-possible/9595.html)

I can plug 3 screens into my 8800GTX-equipped PC - 2 into the GPU and 1 into the onboard VGA. So presumably a properly equipped 3 output eyefinity/Hyrdravision/3d surround card in a motherboard with a onboard could have 4 outputs - although you will only be able to render 3d on one display.

I assume a pair of non-sli/crossfired GPUs could do the same as long as they where of a make and model that could play nicely
