Title: Samsung Galaxy Tab or iPad?
Post by: Nyan on February 13, 2011, 09:22:39 pm
I'm having a hard time deciding between the two. Both come in at $1400 give or take a few dollars.

The main uses will be reading ebooks, watching movies and listening to music, But also web browsing and texting.  Some things point toward the Samsung such as the screen quality and the portability of the device.  The iPad however has 64GB of storage, a 10 inch screen (lower ppi though) and has an entire app store for it.

I'm leaning towards the iPad even though I'm not really a fan of apple products.

What would your thoughts be?

Whole new swag of tablets being released running Android Gingerbread and WebOS, and the new iPad isn't far off (a couple of months at the latest).

I'd wait. I hate saying wait as I am a firm believer in if you want something now, and it will work for you then go for it. But I think you should really wait because the market is going to open up big time.

Galaxy Tab 2 is being announced in the next few hours however I still think Apple have done majority things right with the iPad.

I swear by my ipad now, I bought it overseas and was intending to flog it on tardme for a profit to some helpless iLemming.
COuldnt resist taking it out of the box and having a play, subsequently I have kept it and wouldnt be without it now.

I think they got the Form factor spot on - thats what concerns me with the galaxy.

The HP DM1Z is also a good netbook, about the same specs as that asus, but is currently only in the US. The nz store has the DM1, which is the older model.

I'm waiting for the DM1Z to come out here

I saw this break down..... put it pretty simply for me.

iPad = consume content = fun
Netbook = make content = work

AB wants to consume, therefore iPad IMO.

What the hell is a 'similar eee pc' anyway? One with no keyboard and a touchscreen?

You guys are as bad as the ones that slammed Apple for releasing a phone with no physical keyboard.

Really? So eee pcs are better for:

Pretty much the same, if you find it that fucking difficult to press the down key when reading a book or use the mouse to click on the little music of movie icon then I guess an Ipad is a big advantage.
Otherwise it's just an expensive wanky toy you are buying not for its functionality but for its coolness factor and fashionableness.

So with that in mind I say buy and IPad since people will think it is cooler than that other thing they have never heard of, and really that's all that matters.

A mouse, if you need to plug a mouse in, then it's not portable in the same way a tablet is. You need a flat surface to use a mouse.

Tablets defiantly have valid uses, for situations were you have to use it walking around, I can think of many work related situations where a touchscreen is far superior to a mouse.
Title: Samsung Galaxy Tab or iPad?

I meant touchpad not mouse.

Noones really going to walk around watching a movie, reading a book, emailing or web browsing.
I agree there are some work situations where tablets are handy and that's traditionally been a tablets role.
But the ipad is definitely a consumer item marketed at people who like its cool factor who are going to use it in their home sitting down.

Really? List them.

They make eeePCs now that have touch screens. And they are comparable in price to iPads. The battery life isn't as good, but then again that would be because it can do useful work with the battery. And it doesn't need itoons.

Haha. My god you guys sound like dickheads.

Why buy a Ferrari? You can do so much more with an SUV. You can carry 7 people, go off road, take more luggage, and are safer.

The Ferrari can't do as much stuff. But, it does go around corners a lot faster, is more fun, and yes, cooler.

So I think you guys need to get over your bizarre 'netbook or you're a wanker' attitude and learn to understand that a lot of us enjoy taking the Ferrari out for a spin regularly - but have the Prado sitting in the garage for when we have work to do.

And just remember, this exact debate took place when Apple first produced a phone with no physical keyboard- now a standard feature of most major smartphones.

Try sitting on a couch with an iPad and a netbook, watching movies and reading ebooks as the op stated he intended to do. Tell me what is faster, easier, and feels more natural. I doubt you have even used an iPad.

Then come back to this thread in 5 years and laugh at your silly comments and your extinct netbook.

Did you just compare a Ferrari to an Ipad?

My 1080p blueray SCII at full graphics laptop of doom is more like a ferrari as far as mobile devices go, an Ipad is like one of those new overpriced minis that gives you less features and worse performance than alot of decent mid-range cars at twice the price.

A full graphics laptop of doom is not really a mobile device.

Yes, you can pick it up, but you can't really do anything decent on it without sitting down, placing it on a table and plugging in a mouse.

Where with an iPad, you can check your email while on a roller coaster. If you needed to do such things.

Watching a movie on an ipad compared to a netbook theres like no difference.
Reading an ebook, if you were really into ebooks then you would buy a kindle it dominates the ipad.
Anything that requires input such as emails and web surfing, netbook wins.

Comparing a 'laptop of doom' to a ipad......

hmmmmmmm

How is web surfing or emailing on a netbook easier than a iPad? Last time i used a iPad, it was pretty fucking painless surfing the web.

Now maybe if you had both arms amputated and had hooks, the netbook could be easier to drag a mouse around with using a hook

for the OP, ipad, simpler, easier, more reliable, made for the exact purpose, app store.

If I am on the couch then surely there is a television nearby I could watch this movie on

and a e-book would be much better read on something with an e-ink display. or a actual book!

and in 5 years time I would laugh at the people impulsive enough to buy a horrendously overpriced grainy and glaring LCD tablet. Assuming, of course, display technology doesn't stagnate and hyperinflation doesn't kick in.

Good idea.

He should carry 2 devices.

If he wants to watch a movie he can use the netbook since it's 'no different' to the iPad.

When he wants to read a book, he puts the netbook back in his suitcase and pulls out his kindle, since it somehow 'dominates' the book reading area (unsure how).

Again, sitting on couch, iPad is easier for web surfing/emails.

You definitely havnt used one before.

If you want to read e-book: Buy a kindle
If you want to watch movies: Buy a big fucking tv
If you want to surf the web: buy a laptop.

If you want to read an e-book watch movies, surf the web on one device sitting down: buy a laptop
If you want to read an e-book watch movies, surf the web and send emails standing up: buy a tablet

I like to sit down, so i'll enjoy my extra money and you can enjoy standing up with your tablet.

Correct, with the following mods-

If you want to do those things sitting down WITH A DESK- buy a laptop.

If you want to do those things sitting down- buy an iPad.

If you don't get much attention from the ladies and want a warm sensation in the groin while doing those things while sitting down, buy a laptop.

Once again I reiterate, I have no desk and use a 17inch laptop, there are no groin sensations due to outward facing fans.
My house mates all use netbooks on the couch and those things put out like no heat and weigh nothing.

I'm not saying buy a fucking huge laptop instead of an Ipad, I was just replying to arguments that laptops cant be used on the couch.
If I can do it with that fucking thing Im pretty sure a small child could do that with an eee-pc without getting uncomfortable.

In 5 years we will all still be typing input with tactile keyboards not touch screens and so I'll still be using a laptop of some form.
I'll prob have a collection of e-books on some form of e-ink reader tho.

software to do what, forgive my ignorance. And the ipad is hardly cheap compared to even a touchscreen netbook...

To look at photos I would guess.

Software for complete tethered wireless DSLR shooting. Think of it as RDC to the DSLR, and being able to control every aspect of the camera. But until tehy put BT in the cameras its still a 'wish'.

As for cheap, I meant the software, $20, as opposed to $200-$5000 to run on a win/osx platform. (for a good piece of software)

I just took a huge dump in the toilet while browsing the net on my laptop.

Was not ideal.

Both are fairly useless, but it will take you longer to realise this with the iPad.

I have to add, you can use the eee pc's standing up. The 7" one easily, and the 10" one somewhat reasonable, if you have decent sized hands. That being said, its not as easy when sitting down. So i think bell summed it up well. If you want to stand up while you mobile compute, at the cost of processing power, and usability, get a tablet.

Also i must say the internet is really poorly set up still for touch screen browsing. So many sites, just aren't designed to browse them well, without a mouse/touchpad. I mean even this site, when I tried to visit it on my tablet, i found it terrible hard to use.

I have read about people putting ipads in cars as instrument clusters also as a alternative to hugely expensive specialist solutions. Seems like both applications could be better with a tablet/touchsceen that had a proper USB host and a sd-card slot.

I just made an order for one on Acquire.

Stock ran dry in 30 seconds.

I got an order confirmation but they also say "we will confirm by email if you got lucky".

In 5 years we will all still be typing input with tactile keyboards not touch screens and so I'll still be using a laptop of some form.
I'll prob have a collection of e-books on some form of e-ink reader tho.

It hasn't been 5 years but its been 2 so where are we at now, what type of devices GetSome peeps currently using?
I have exceeded Past-Bell's expectations by ending up a with a fuckload of laptops and pretty much soley relying on a kindle for books.

Here is my inventory:
Galaxy Note
Kindle
17.3 inch gaming laptop.
10inch travel laptop.
14inch linux laptop for work
13inch macbook with broken keyboard that I picked up for nothing for some apple dev.

No desktop, no TV, no tablet.

I use my Nexus 4 + a desktop (for the past 2 weeks I have been away from my desktop and have been using my GF's laptop and my Nexus). I have a TV but it's for console and media sharing only, I don't have a TV reception, can't stand NZ broadcasting.

I'd love a phablet. I might replace my Nexus 4 with the Nexus 7 when they release a 4G/LTE version or pick up a Samsung Galaxy Mega when unlocked versions become available.

4.7" screen just isn't big enough considering I try to do a lot on it (read news, emails, videos etc.)

Sold my tablet.

Just found that I always preferred to sit at my uncomfortable desk and use the PC.

Wasn't worth having a $700 piece of kit sitting there to be used a couple of times a week.
