Do you want to go to Mars?
I'm not talking about a virtual vacation implanted into your brain, this is the real deal. A company, 'Mars One' has laid plans done to land people on Mars by 2023.
http://mars-one.com/
They're a new company with no money, but they are serious. The required technology exisits, like the Falcon rocket built by SpaceX, and they plan to fund it by corporate sponsorship and making a big media event of the trip and landing.
Most importantly, it's a one-way trip. Four people will be sent to mars, and the company plans to send another 4 every two years.
I'm dubious of thier method of funding, and doubt they'll make the deadline. However a Mars landing my my lifetime would be awesome and I wish them all the best.
Unfortunately they intend to 'protect' people from radiation, which means no mutant ladies with three boobs.

Your first job as a colonist is to bury the bodies of the previous colonists.

Keen, although I remember a similar thread to this many years ago, in which I said something along the lines of "they had better have some sweet pussy on that ship".
Imagine if you got selected along with a bunch of other men and some old grandma.
I can imagine that due to the publicity factor of this mission, they will be selecting a bunch of young and sexy people like Fear Factor does. It will be like Big Brother Mars Edition. And they will probably pick 3 guys and one girl, so the guys fight over the girl. Or otherwise just have a big 4-way orgy, which will pump up the ratings big time.
-
^ I'd watch it.
The uncensored version which plays late at night.
-
It's easy to send people to Mars.
Getting them back again is a bit harder.

What's your point?
This company clearly states that the reason for a one way trip is because a return trip is too hard.
-
I'd sacrifice my life to go to Mars to be honest.

Look me up when you get there.
I'll be one of the other 3 people on the entire planet.
We can play practical jokes on the new guys when they arrive, like move thier Mars habitat while they are sleeping.

I'd be bored in a week.
That's because you are a boring person.
-
No it's because mars is inhospitable. Deathrow prisoners get more freedom than anyone sent on this mission.

Is that a Mars bar in your pocket?

There'd be a bit of a lag issue I think.
-
Well I haven't touched bf3 single player yet. wheres the power outlet ? Fuck it, I'll kill me some colonists. 0 lag, and better graphics.
-
No respawn though.
-
No future anyway.

There's a documentary about Mars on channel four right now.
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

It's intresting. This company has big ideas, and no money.
Just like me.
It's likey humans will land on Mars in the next 30 years, but the name on the side of the lander will be the company who paid the most.
(probaly google)
-
I doubt we will remember google in 30 years

mars street view. via google rover.. sweet.

I'll one-way to mars, but only if they start a breeding programme.

Mars One is making an announcement tomorrow about the Astronaut selection program.

So, they are taking applicants, you can sign up on the site.
You can view all the other applicants here, read about them and watch their videos.

Had a quick read of some of the "applicants".
They sound like bad ads from a dating agency video!
"I'm a critically discerning cosmopolitan, identifying with a variety of roles and yet very few." WTF?
"I am a student currently and in life indefinitely." - Rolls eyes.
"I have a passion for my studies at Reading University, philosophy" Oh, THAT will be handing in space or on another planet!
The fact that the top star rating you can give them is called "gorgeous" makes me wonder who set this site up!
-
And these are the people who will boldly go where no man or woman has gone before. To explore strange new worlds. The first step of humanity into the unknown universe.
These critically discerning cosmopolitans from Reading University.
-
I like microbiology and immunology, and I like reading books. Sometimes I do maths and read about the Universe on the Internet or in books. I write verses and a few songs, 'cause I like music and have graduated from music school. I like to drive my car and I adore my dog and tortoise.
She sometimes does maths.
Sometimes.
And adores her tortoise.
I doubt she'll be allowed to bring her dog and tortoise to Mars with her.

I reckon they should send both Alexander's.
And both Sean's.
That's your four Mars colonists right there.

Well, you'd be able to cut out any child raising considerations for the preparation of the first trip at least.

wait a minute....we should tell everybody there's a giant space goat coming to eat the planet!

While I admire the pioneering sprit of many of these applicants (they are down to a shortlist of a 100), I don't have so much for this guy.

For the chance to move to Mars, he'd happily leave it all behind.
It would be tougher, he said, saying goodbye to wife Emma and sons Sina, 14, and Ali, 4.
"It's a bit hard for them, but my wife is trying to understand the situation and she is supporting me, because this is something very important."
Dude, leaving your wife and kids, that's pretty harsh.
For me, no way I would ever leave my family behind.

Wifes/GF, maybe I could understand? But kids... WTF is that dude thinking.

You were right about the no money thing.
They still have no money. Except the money they took for themselves. To buy a nice house. On Earth.

That's bullshit.
My joke about the atmosphere was much funnier than Spacemonkey's.
All these years and that erroneous post went unanswered.
Well, better late than never.

Here's the response from Mars-one regarding this article.
http://www.mars-one.com/news/press-releases/mars-ones-ceo-bas-lansdorp-answers-questions-about-mission-feasibility (http://www.mars-one.com/news/press-releases/mars-ones-ceo-bas-lansdorp-answers-questions-about-mission-feasibility)
While I don't necessarily believe Mars-one will still be able to pull this off, I agree that a lot of things on that medium article were wrong. Seams more of just a case of a reporter and disgruntled applicant trying to discredit them.
It will be interesting when the actual training starts.
