So, it's that time of the year where the handset releases are coming thick and fast.
So far we have:
The HTC One: http://www.htc.com/www/smartphones/htc-one/
Blackberry's Z10: http://us.blackberry.com
Sony Xperia Z: http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/phones/xperia-z/
Samsung Galaxy 4: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_iv-5125.php
Apple's iPhone 6?: Nothing yet.
(Any Windows 8 flagship phones?)
I'll be looking at picking up a high-end smartphone sometime around March/April and have my heart set on the HTC One (depending on price) as I'm currently using a Huawei Ascend G3. But in all honesty, I am really looking forward to what Apple offer. They really can't afford to release another iPhone 4. I love the physical design of the iphone 4 & 5 which is why I am really interested in the HTC One and the Z10.
-
I have been doing heaps of research on the entry-mid range phones $250-400 bracket. Fuck me there are a heap of options.
The ones that come up recommended the most are the:
Sony Xperia Sola : http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/phones/xperia-sola/
Sony Xperia P: http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/phones/xperia-p/
Huawei G600 : http://www.huaweidevice.com/worldwide/productFeatures.do?pinfoId=3442&directoryId=6001&treeId=3745&tab=0
LG L7 (P705) : http://www.lg.com/nz/mobile-phones/lg-Optimus-L7-LG-P705
Motorola Atrix 2 : http://www.motorola.com/us/consumers/MOTOROLA-ATRIX-2/73912,en_US,pd.html
I have looked and errrr over them all, but in all honesty I have 0 knowledge on android and their phones.
On paper the G600 reads the best, but people say the atrix 2 when on sale at $200 is by far the best value mid range android phone on the market.
Any input from people with a clue would be great!
-
The Atrix appears to have it in the bag.
qHD 4.3" screen coupled with the handset design does it for me. It has the same CPU as the others (bar the G600 with its 1.2GHZ DC).
-
What's the difference in all the screens and types, care to do a rough laymans breakdown?
Also, what's the NFC/NGC?? thing that's in phones.
-
NFC = Near Field Communication.
It doesn't really have a place yet (by which I mean I have yet to see it take off in the public domain), but it lets phones communicate with devices by simply being in close proximity.
As for differing screen types - http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/best-phone-screen-display-tech-explained-951855
A lot of them change due to handset size.
-
NFC tags are great.
I use a couple. Got one in my car that turns on bluetooth, gps. It turns off wifi and turns up the brightness.
Just put the phone in the holder and its ready to go. No need to do anything with it.
-
Oh sweet! I love the tech, just haven't seen it being deployed in common places yet.
-
Thanks Rii :D
-
Yea i would buy the atrix. Getting it for $200 would be a great deal.
EDIT:Wait no JB? Is it on the cards for a release. A cortex A9 1gb ram should run it nicely.
-
High end phone?
S4 or bust tbh. Anything else (bar the the Sony for its toughness if that is a factor) is borderline on a waste of time.
Only phone I'd drop 1g into is Samsung flagship. Was very tempted to on-sell my S3 in favor of the Nexus 4, but don't feel its worth the time/hassle due to the S4 being ever so close.
Nexus 4 is a design and feel that makes me spray semen like a fire hydrant all fucked up.
The S4 will kill it in DPI/Resolution/CPU/RAM.
And, iPhone Rii? Gutted dude. That phone can fuck right off. I'd rather be in control of my phone. Dual-booting 2 versions of Jellybean on my S3 now. Custom as fuck. Battery life is epic and my UI is EXACTLY how I want it.
-
I didn't say I wanted an iPhone, just very very interested at what Apple does to keep its fans spending money. Because Apple lovers are on the edge, if they're given another re-hash, even they're going to walk.
I'd love a Galaxy Note 2, but that shit is expensive.
-
And a re-hash they will get. They stray any other way, they'll look like they're going back on themselves. Android is already half the market, the S4 (and a few other devices) will kill iOS, at least imo.
They better have a deep, amazing hat full of tricks we ain't seen yet, cause once you enter a world of custom Android, anything iPhone looks like a fucking joke.
That shit is for old people man. People who care not to think, not to try, not to be interested, but to look they are smarter then they are.
-
I'm going to order a Nexus 4 with YouShop. $299USD + $12.50NZD for the YouShop service.
I just need a US based VPN so I can use the Google Play store.
Any recommendations on a easy to use VPN?
-
Nexus 4? You fucking champ. Enjoy the awesomeness of pure awesome.
VPN? No sir. Ask Spacemonkey? I'm a reacharound will get him over the line :)
-
Ive been using iOS for 3years now and might make the change to android, iOS 6 has been nothing but annoying and the JB community has been slow to follow suit so my custom themes and tweaks aren't as I want them.
S4 looks promising but why so goddam big.
-
That shit is for old people man. People who care not to think, not to try, not to be interested, but to look they are smarter then they are.
you know some people just want a phone that works out of the box and continues working? Like derps with PC's! And that's where a iPhone fits in.
A small miniority of users are probably power users like your self swindle? android or ios.
Rii, VPN for store? is the store ip blocked?
I use these guys for netflix etc. http://www.unotelly.com/unodns/pricing
-
Yeah, Google Play Store for devices is IP locked. I got in and could order but - Nexus 4 is not available. Apparently it's not shipping for another 3 weeks. Stock levels are dead I assume.
I ended up using a free one - HideIPVPN, worked a treat.
-
So will the nexus 4 never be available here?
Derp, sorry, just way fucking more expensive!
-
So will the nexus 4 never be available here?
Only through importers for a massive premium. PriceSpy has it listed at $600+
Google are having difficulty supplying to the US so I don't think it's ever going to make its way here in a retail capacity.
-
Well, I put an order through anyway.
Apparently Google ship before the estimated time of shipping and don't charge before it's shipped. So I'll see how it goes. I may cancel if I get antsy.
I'll post updates if you're keen, Growler. It's come to about $390 total (including shipping and YouShop's fee/shipping). It may not ship for another 2 weeks but for that price you get:
DISPLAY: True HD IPS Plus capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors, 768 x 1280 pixels, 4.7 inches (~318 ppi pixel density)
MEMORY: 8 GB storage, 2 GB RAM
CAMERA: Primary 8 MP, Secondary 1.3 MP
VIDEO: 1080p@30fps
OS: Android OS, v4.2 (Jelly Bean), upgradable to v4.2.2 (Jelly Bean)
CPU: Quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait
GPU: Adreno 320
-
It's huge overkill for me mate, I need a phone, alarm, true gps, a shitty camera for onsite photos with instant outgoing email. The only other thing I will use it for is camera control.
I will literally never do anything else on it, never be incoming emails synching etc, will never browse on it etc etc etc.
Oh I might do a weather forecast on it once in a blue moon.
Plus I think 4.7 is too big. How big is an S3? I had a play wtih Jontys and all I could think was that it was so fucking massive that it was impractical to me.
Hell though in saying that I'll give swindle $250 for his S3 ;)
-
True.
It would be overkill. But it sits within your budget of $250 - $400.
-
good point!
so $200 Atrix vs $400 nexus
-
Once you use a 4.5"+ screen, you won't go back.
Its not actually that big, you're just not used to it. Once you are, you love it, and smaller screens seem pretty impractical on a device that can do so much.
Remember when a 24" LCD monitor for a computer was massive? I was happy with my 19", and didn't see a need to upgrade to anything larger. Now look, a 24" is bog standard.
You can buy my S3 off me for $250, but when the S4 is available that is :) *serious buzz though, my S3 will be going cheep once that S4 is out, so feel free to PM me in regards to queuing it up*
-
sure bro, how long till S4 is out?
I think it may be too long thou, I really need to do something in the next few weeks.
-
S3 VS S3 MINI?
smaller?? less features?
-
Once you use a 4.5"+ screen, you won't go back.
Ill go back. 4.6" screen is nice but I would like a smaller phone.
-
Well, an update on my N4 order.
Google Play canceled my order because the shipping address (provided by YouShop) I was forced to use as my billing info when putting in my CC (I could not use my NZ address as my billing info when making the order) did not match with the info my "financial institution has on file". Well, at least that's what I believe after given these reasons by Google for the order being canceled.
- Details provided for your credit card do not match those on-file with your financial institution.
- The address information provided was incomplete and could not be verified.
- To block an attempt to purchase more than the maximum allowable devices.
So I have changed my mailing address of my credit card to the same address as the YouShop US address by logging into my BNZ account. Hopefully the order will go through this time. Once it has, I will change my address back to my NZ one.
I went into BNZ to ask if they could do this for me and all I got was "umm, when using your CC online, the company doesn't see what address you have on file so that shouldn't be an issue" to which my response was "yes, but BNZ and most other banks have a verification process that checks that the billing address I use when making the order matches the address I have on file to prevent credit card fraud". The looked sheepish and told me they couldn't do anything :s
If this fails again, I'm going to attempt to make a new Gmail account that has no history of me making purchases on Google Wallet, see if that helps.
-
I'll sell you one for $699 if all else fails.
-
I'll sell you one for $699 if all else fails.
No thank you. The phone is worth it but I'm not giving someone that much vacuous profit.
It's pathetic that the phone retails for that much when it goes for $299US.
-
That's at cost + 5% Margin
-
The NZ distributor for this is making some insane bank.
And they're getting away with it because the phone ranks up with the other $700+ handsets.
Either that or LG is pocketing some serious cash after selling to NZ distributors at a massive increase in price.
-
It's weird huh, I want to get a product, $29.99 US, but they won't sell to me, I have to use NZ distributor. $100 here. I emailed them asking why it was so much as it seemed like point blank deep fisting to me.
shipping, duty, gst....... BULLSHIT BITCH! Youshop and its $50nz..... fuck you cock sucker! I am all for supporting NZ/local, but not when it is at my huge expense for what seems to be no justification.
-
It's downright offensive is what it is.
-
It's me, I'm in your purchases, charging you monies.
-
Well, I gave up trying to order one. Google kept cancelling my order because they thought it was fraudulent, and their support is fucking pathetic, just repeating nonsensical bullshit when I asked what the reason was for cancellation. Now the dumb cunts have put my Google Wallet on 'hold'.
I did manage to find someone who had the same issue and as a result managed to convince Google to allow him to use his account to purchase Nexus 4's. I've asked him to order me one _b
-
clusterfuck. Take my money google!
NO I DON'T WANT IT LOLOLOL HERP!
-
I'll be selling my Huawei Ascend G300 on the cheap if you want it Growler (when I get my Nexus 4).
http://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_ascend_g300-4594.php
The GPS isn't always so great but I've used it to use Google's new turn by turn navigation thing (in beta) before without any hitches.
Also, it's not 4GB internal memory, it's like 1 or 2, but has a slot for MicroSD.
-
Thanks Rii, let me do some digging and see if it will do what I need.
-
your nexus here yet Rii?
And swindle, you placed your order on the $1300 new phone?
Was it all you thought it would be or more just gimmicks and a larger screen?
-
It left the shipping forwarders in the States yesterday. Should be here by the end of next week.
For some reason, forwarders hold on to shipments for close to a week before they release it to the NZ address.
The forwarder used was ship2u.co.nz as the friend importing the phone uses them quite regularly. I would have used YouShop but it turns out they do the same thing, hold on to the shipment for up to a week before notifying it's arrived and then sending it on.
I'm contemplating selling it on for a small profit and picking up an HTC One when it releases. I've loved the look of that phone ever since it was announced, however HTC have lost hteir 'Tier 1' status with manufactures and cannot source components to have the phone made.
-
The Huawei P2 looks nice also
-
After 24 hrs with my Nexus 4 I am thoroughly in love with it. I wasn't too in love with the physical design of it before I got it, but now I can't get enough of it and am keeping it out of its bumper and not putting on a screen protector because the screen is such a pleasure to use. Smooth, glossy and incredibly well waited. I really wanted a 1080p phone but after using the Nexus, I don't regret the 1280 x 768 resolution for one second.
The only gripe I have with it is that the screen isn't as rich as I'd hoped it would be. The colour can appear a bit washed out at times. Once I figure out how to root it (I've unlocked the bootloader) I'm going to run an app that lets me choose a warmer colour gamut so hopefully I can squeeze a little bit of contrast out of it.
+1 one, feels good in the hand.
-
How much did you end up paying for it (all up including shipping, custom fees (does such thing exist?) etc).
-
I ended up paying $460 for it, but that was including throwing a 20 to the guy who imported it for me.
Bare in mind I got the 8GB. I'm not a gigabyte slut. I wont let apps gather dust on my phone, I'll delete them if I don't use them regularly.
-
Issue with getting an 8 or even 16gb is if you use it for music, you're fucked.
Brother recently went from 64gb ip4s to a 16gb Nexus 4, he has a fuckload of music and when he couldn't fit it all, started streaming. Steaming uses lots of data, so he burnt though that pretty quick too. Size does matter, depending how you use it.
-
Oh. No expandable storage on it. Never knew that. Seems a like a big negative for what seems like a good phone.

Hah. bl for him. I set up playlists based on what I want to listen to. I've never needed shitloads of databits because I don't need to carry my entire music collection with me everywhere I go.

I spose this belongs here

9 games for andriod master race
-
WIN!
Thanks Kayne.
-
Did you get the new version Rii?
http://www.androidcentral.com/confirmed-nexus-4-now-shipping-updated-design
-
LOSE!!!
Thanks Rii.
-
Os, yep. I checked about 10 mins ago after Playtech posted the link.
-
I'm tired of these Android humble bundles. I want my PC games.
-
This humble bundle is win.
Anomaly: Korea, and The Room are EPIC. The Room is only about 2-3hrs long but so much fun, kept me glued to the screen until I had solved it all. Will be on the hunt for similar games.
A:K is a reverse tower defense game, and the visuals are big time sexy.
-

Na, I have far too many PC games. What I need is more time to play them all.

you're really not fucked. $99 will buy you 12gb of data with 2degrees that lasts 6 months. That's $16.50 per month for not just any song you currently own, but any song, period!
Very tempted to import a HTC One. So sexay.
-
HTC One ftw.
Build quality? Yes sir.
-
Hurry up mate! I want your S3 ;)
-
After my retina blowout, it might be some time :p
-
hahahah fucks sake mofo!
I will start sending you subliminal messages...... you will geHTC One
-
Oh I wouldn't bother.
I'm already 99% of the way to getting the HTC One. At this point all it would take is to hold one irl.
-
there's that new mozilla operating system coming out too....I bet it's shit like firefox.
-
Firefox has really turned into a shitbird lately hasn't it.
It's a complete waste of space on a Mac (if I leave it open too long it starts hemhorriging memory leaks).
-
And Chrome sucks at scrolling on a Mac, and that breaks my balls because I've resorted to using Safari :(
-
I'm going to be a super hipster and go back to IE
In other news, my boss said I can have whatever phone I want, I said S4... I'm cleared when they arrive in Brunei... Swoit.

Ha, I like that ad.

Its a good add.
Its a good phone to.
Pity it weighs about as much as a brick.
