"While on its own this is not illegal, putting that facts together, with the way the company conducted its business, it simply added to the companies' overall picture."

Shame we can't apply this principle to the people who really should be in jail. Like banks for example.

I was initially thinking "jail time, really? It's just pot" but then as I read on, the guys at SOG appear to be pretty brazen about the fact they supply equipment to pot heads. They deserve jail time for shear stupidity.

Agreed. Those radio/tv ads were pretty blatant. They dug their own graves by getting so much attention.

What, like hardware stores supply equipment to bomb makers?
HURR DURR GOVT.

Mind you, that's only reading at face value, I don't know all the facts. If they were also laundering drug money, then yeh. But for supplying gardening equipment and having a provokative radio campaign that jests at what everyone knows the hydroponics stuff gets used for anyway... I guess free speech ain't that free. Which is an extreme worry.

***
read a bit more.
The whole thing is just stupid. Selling bongs is illegal. Selling fertilizer is illegal. Selling planting boxes is illegal. Selling UV lights is illegal. Best not be caught with any fucking soil in your back yard, that shit's illegal. You might grow plants with it.
Someone better release some actual facts into the media soon as to why it deserves 4 and a bit years in jail other than "oh because he knew people might grow plants with his plant growing products."

Shit makes me just about as angry as copyright fiascos.

Supplying growing equipment horrible offense. We should also be tracking down those needle exchange owners and locking them up since they are freely providing druggies gear, oh wait thats the government isnt it. Should also charge engineering shops that do up cars, since they are brazen about the fact they are equipping and encouraging illegal racing.

I guess that's the point. They marketed their company in a way to attract the kind of people who want to grow pot.

You can get all the same gardening equipment (except bongs) at a Palmers Garden store, or Mitre 10. However Mitre 10 never made tv/radio ads encouraging people to grow weed.

I actually think all people should learn plant growing skills. They are good skills to have.

The ads were bloody annoying though.

The state of it, but I think there was more to it then just selling gear to "pot heads", Still can buy hydroponics from plenty of places inc SOG, for those all year round Tomatas, because they get expensive out of season!

In more important news
"The Overseas Investment Office has just approved the sale of 14000 hectares of prime forestry land to the Chinese government."

A colleague from years ago reckoned anyone could turn a nice wee profit growing a small plant under the stairs or in a wardrobe and selling it to kids people.

He mentioned that you want to buy the parts from several different outlets and over a reasonable amount of time. He said he knows for a fact when someone walks out of a hydroponics store with a full set up one of the various gangs end up knocking on the door within a few days, and they want their cut.

In this guys case I also heard there's more to it than just the hydroponics, but that's just hearsay.

I'd  say in this guys case, he banked on feigning ignorance, but lucked out when the judge was some hard cunt who called bullshit, I bet his face dropped when he realised the judge wasn't a dumbass.

Sigh, the Pyro's are double-teaming the derp.

Their number plates, logos, some of the product they sold. I'm not saying it;s bad to sell the stuff, I'm merely commenting on how stupid they were not to be a bit more subtle about it.

It wasn't just about selling of equipment.

As the Judge said, "There was an obligation on you. You had a responsibility because of your position. You had an ability to do something about it, but you failed to do it."

He was selling equipment to customers he knew were growing cannabis.

Yeah, and that's fine. I'm not arguing that.
I don't think it deserves jail time for doing basically nothing illegal (in terms of business practice, at least. Not doubting they were probably all huge potheads).

See that is something that is convieniently ignored in the media. If he's giving advice on how to grow a better plant over the counter than he is indeed a very stupid person. Even so distantly indirect, that's more getting involved than simply selling items that could be used for anything. If a crim is dumb enough to open their mouth in store about what they're using it for, then the store person is even dumber for responding.

Well if they were caught doing it they probably would.

I have far more of an issue with the people sitting on the benefit and SELLING the drugs. Getting state money on top of all that undeclared tax free income. Far more of a rip off.

If someone came in and asked what was best for killing humans and how to dispose of the evidence, surely they'd be obligated to notify police.

Pot is becoming legal in more places then ever, faster then ever.

Look back to some poll I saw a while ago. Rated NZ the #1 place in the world for freedom.

I shit you not.

Respectable poll if I remember rightly. And this place is #1 in the world? For freedom? We just sent a guy to fucking jail, at our expense, for selling lights and soil.

Guess I should be lucky I don't live in a country near the bottom of the list? Right? Nah. Fuck that logic. I live here. This country should just grow up already. This is pathetic.

Banks known to fix interest rates, launder millions for drug cartels, become "to big to fail" and this is how we pander our time away?

EDIT

Poll : http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10858183

Quote
New Zealand topped the index as offering the highest level of human freedom worldwide, followed by the Netherlands and Hong Kong

Was taking the piss, but it still fits some what. End of the day the guy as far as I know(correct me if im wrong) he hasn't actually committed any offenses, yes he didn't run the business the best way from a legal stand point, but no laws were broken. Surely the money and time wasted on this could have been better spent on actually taking down a real criminal, instead of locking someone up that was supplying growing equipment that "Could" have been used to grow dope, a harmless drug in the grand scale of things.

Kinda iffy on this whole thing. I feel like its being told in a certain way to cause turble.

I know that switched on , back in 2010, were selling illegal drugs (not just weed) over (under?) the counter, which is what I think the raids were about. I'd also heard rumors that the police were monitoring the customers of switched on gardeners, marking on your record if you had shopped there. IDK, Maybe they did a fly over your house later on in a helicopter to see if you had a plantation out back... which wouldn't make sense since you're buying gear to grow inside. Anyway.

Quote from: Pyromanik;1524576

It is illegal to sell bongs. Shop owners selling them market them as vases for flowers, If you walk into some stores you'll notice fake flowers just sitting through the top of them.

I also don't know if people can say weed is harmless. From watching a few friends change dramatically mentally when they become heavy smokers, I find it hard to deny that its 150% safe. I also read a few weeks back that IN MICE, mice that were introduced to marijuana would have a higher chance of having off spring with autism.

Simply put, prohibition on marijuana costs the taxpayers far too much annually.

Whether or not this guy deserves to go to jail for what he or may not have done, the bottom line is we have yet again paid for a lengthy surveillance, sting, trial, and now need to accommodate and feed him for 4 years, just for fucking weed.

Is this going to stop those who want hydro gear from getting it? Is this conviction going to to make any dent on the growing of weed in nz? We won a moral victory though right?

Shouldnt we get back to rebuilding CHCH, paying out insurance claims, Paying for the water view connection,  paying for an inner-city auckland rail link, etc etc..

The law is the law, it's the job of courts to uphold that law.

If you want to legalize marijuana, vote for the greens at the next election.

Im not arguing that we shouldnt enforce the law, Im just pointing out that in my opinion the law needs to be changed to avoid expenditure like this.

And im not sure that this topic is high on Greens policy since Nandor left and the greens became a "serious' party option.

The evidence. Really stacked up against him..

It was more a case of criminal negligence and turning a blind eye than actually being illegal growing or producing...
