Title: Cpu upgrade for 775 socket
Post by: bigROBOTbill on October 11, 2013, 01:04:09 pm
What would be the best thing to get more speed than my q6600 (rated at 2.4GHz, running at 2.97) on a 775 socket (I have a 750i SLi)?

Any magic out there? Can't really afford a new MB at this stage.

Q9450 would be what your looking for. But it's not going to be cheap. Everyone will be looking for them.

Is overclocking a option? Might be able to get a bit more outta the Q6600

Thanks Benji, but that Q9450 doesn't seem much faster than a Q6600, I am overclocking it a little to 2.97GHz, but I can't seem to get it past there (fsb @333 with 9x multiplier). Might try again when I get home, raise the FSB to 470 and drop themultiplier to 7 as I've just read somewhere to get 3.3, I'd be happy with that.

It wouldn't be worth buying a 775 cpu these days. Seems to be a bit of a premium on them.

I suck at overclocking, just tried to up it a bit and got no start ups till I reset the bios (luckily a button on the back) all the advice seems so different, the names of the parts as well as the values shown.
Maybe I should leave it alone.
