Post by: Apostrophe Spacemonkey on March 26, 2014, 12:03:58 pm
All these people going on about how Facebook will now ruin oculus rift, makes me lol. People don't seam to understand how business works.

Also notch will no longer make minecraft for the rift cause he hates Facebook. Like I care, minecraft is shit anyway.

Discuss.

I'm this close from closing my facebook account.

But all my class mates and my project team use it to organise shit.

November, this year, I close it for good.

That is odd. I am considering creating a Facebook account. I was banned from Facebook in 2012 for being a bot, which was a shame because I was only 500 friends away from getting 5000 friends :(

I am now convinced Tiwa has created a bot to post for him.

Bravo Tiwa.

Agreed.

But Large companies buy small companies all the time (Google, Microsoft, EA). What annoys me it that people hate on these large companies because they bought something they (the fans) love. And also, as in this case, say the smaller company "sold out".

Of course they sold out; for 2 billion dollars. Who wouldn't?

It's just business, a company is perfectly entitled to buy another company.

I can see how someone who backed and supported Oculus from Kickstarter might be pissed that they sold out to a company with Facebook's reputation.

It is, however, stupid to throw a hissy fit until it's revealed exactly what Facebook want to do with the Rift and how much Oculus's plans change.

I wonder if Facebook have a VR app like Playstation Home in mind.

I'm one of the people who are peeved about it ;)

After playing around on the oculus... 9 months back or something, and hearing about their future plans, You knew where they were headed, where their intent lied, etc etc.

With Mark Zuckerbergz saying shit like...

Quote
"Mobile is the platform of today, and now we're also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow," said Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, in the press release. "Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate."

I feel that he doesn't quite get who the target market of the Oculus were. He's already talking about how it can be used to share media off of social networking sites so you "feel like you were there too" (Not a quote)

While I don't play minecraft anymore, I agree with what Notch has said, You don't know where their intent lies, which is obviously worrying for people who have been waiting for the oculus for 2years+ now.

Obviously it's early days, but still, It's a worry.

yay in VR advertising because thats all Facebook really is is your info full of fucking advertising..

look at the latest round of layout changes.. and then tell me you don't see the following happening.

Rift released as it was intended - lots of us buy it and hope for the best..

it is really good and then suddenly boom a few software updates that are required to use latest games and BAM.. popup FB advertising..

i can just see this as a doomed tech now.

Perhaps it will be perfectly fine, you just won't see half the stuff in your game because it will be "filtered out" for you..
But that's ok, there will be an option to turn the filtering off.. It just won't work properly.
Title: Re: Facebook buys oculus rift, and everyone goes stupid.

It will be fine. You can still buy dev kits and developers aren't going to throw all their work away.

Notch was "in talks" not "in development" so nothing of value was lost.

Are you suggesting that the possibility that the company, facebook, who now has controlling interest of this company/product won't influence the direction in any way shape or form to meet its own direction? (Aka income from targeted advertising)

Lewl

The possibility does exist, whether or not it's likely the chance it may happen is still there. It doesn't surprise me that people would not want to contribute products or services to monster corps like facebook or their controlling interesting lol

The reason why I am against the Facebook buyout is that the company is known for being anything but innovating. They'll end up steering the device to a mass audience by potentially dulling its application use. I don't believe they are going to be able to take it anywhere that someone else could.

Hell, I would have liked to see Apple buy them out, Microsoft or Google.

Facebook just want to get into hardware.

Why?

Why not?

Google and Microsoft are doing it.

They actually make multiple things that validate hardware investment.
The Facebook just makes a single web based service.

And it's not like it's buying shares in a server corp.
This is far removed from their core business.

So that leaves everyone wondering;
Why?

And as for Facebook making hardware, has everyone already forgotten the hardware they did make? And how fucking terribly that failed?

Don't trust anything Facebook owns or does. No slight against you old friend :)

I don't believe they do anything for the good of the end user. I can't see them taking VR to the place it needs to be.

See, if valve on the other hand had brought Oculus Rift then we would all be singing a very different tune, and for a good reason. Just glad valve do have their own VR under dev.

No offense taken mate.

IIRC, Valve's VR was never to be a consumer product, was purely for research. Valve's research and what not went to the OR team.

The mother of one of the girls involved in a drinking game that left a nine-year-old in hospital has blamed Facebook for the shocking incident.
She said the three girls, aged eight, nine and 11, stole drinks from her cabinet after watching videos of so-called Neknominate stunts  on Facebook.
They then went to a shed where Rhiannon Scully downed a dangerous mix of vodka, whisky and orange juice.

what i want to do is make a hack to the movie theatre app..

in the demos you sit in an empty theatre in a seat of your choosing,

what i want to do is then hack it to suddenly have walking dead zombies appear in the seat next to you and snarl so when you turn it is about to attack,

just to then see the reaction of the person wearing said rift..
