Title: Upgrading ram - should i leave the old ram in?
Post by: benlav on November 21, 2014, 09:56:20 am
I currently have some kingston value ram, which has treated me well, but I'm looking at picking up some of this

http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=MEMGSK0361&qr=ec_BFS-B_56 (http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=MEMGSK0361&qr=ec_BFS-B_56)

PB have a sale tonight so I can pick this up for $100.

So, that being said, I have 2 x 4gb of slightly slower ram, is it detrimental to leave it in the system and run 16 gbs?

You've already got slower RAM? I'm not sure how newer mobos operate, but faster RAM would always drop down in speed to match the ratings of the slower RAM. Your slower RAM will be operating as a bottleneck.

What retardo said, plus running mismatched ram increases your chances of instability.

Am running an i7 920 on x58 motherboard with 3x2gb sticks of 1333mhz, and 3x4gb sticks of something else, don't have any stability issues. But then again it's not overclocked or anything.

Buy the big pack, try running all of it and see what happens?
