Title: Racism in game
Post by: Gloveslap on July 18, 2015, 03:14:09 pm
I was playing on the Getsome TF2 Trade #1 server today, when someone was showing off and getting great amusement from his Nazi/hitler outfit that he had created. I took found this to be racist and offensive as a symbol of what the Nazi party stood for, so I stood up against it. Some of the language I used was less than savory, which did land me a ban. Yet the admins had no problem with the implied racism of the outfit, essentially passively supporting it. While I would like to get unbanned, that is not the main topic of this post, and if I don't get unbanned for swearing that is fine, I take responsibility for what I said. But I would like to know Getsome's stance on racism and if it is fine with it on its servers, is someone able to play with a swastika tag and spray it all over maps? or is there a line that you draw somewhere, I would also like to know why the admins/mods on thought me standing up against a symbol of racism was worse than the symbol itself. I know that without attachments this post lacks much to stand up against, but its purpose was not to single the person out, but more to clarify Getsomes position on racism and racist symbols and I was advised to make a post about it by Majestic Dragon in game at the time I was banned.

Thanks,

Gloveslap

Please supply us with your in game name. and about the time you had this issue. As we have no ban with your current name here on the forums.

Also, our admins have the discretion to deal with any situations they see arise and there have been a few on today.

I would also like to point out that we have a rules thread on the forum you have posted in.

Gloveslap is my IGN, the ban may have been lifted. The ban was not my main concern anyhow. But thankyou for directing me towards your rules post.

even if the ban was lifted, we would still have a record for it, which there is not.

Right that is strange, maybe I misunderstood a kick. All the message said was 'fuck off'.

Anyhow I read the rules, 'Racism Using racist, sexist or otherwise offensive comments or words in the foray in any context towards any person. This includes excessive profanity, and over use of the word racist.' but I guess that this actually doesn't apply to racist imagery or impersonation of certain characters so I was fully in the wrong for calling out someone appearing in the way they did. I apologize for being in the wrong  but I still wonder if this needs to be amended to include racist imagery as well as racist speech.

further down in the server rules:
Quote
No pornographic or offensive sprays
Pornographic sprays or any other material that people may find offensive.
nazi/swastika sprays would fall under this. do you remember the person who was spraying these in the map - if so PM it to one of the admins so that they can look into it.

if not just keep an eye out and if the sprays come up again get some screenshots of it or PM a admin at hte time its happening so they can come have a look.

The issue was over a sign with an image on it. admins on at the time have been told about it, and will look at trying to discourage in the future.

The rules are quite clear that racism is not acceptable on the servers or the forums, but that's within a greater context of not using offensive/hateful language, swearing, harassment, abuse, disrespect etc. Abusive behaviour will not be tolerated, but equally we are not the politically correct fun police and something that you find personally offensive may not always meet the threshold of abuse. Being a loud obnoxious anti racist is nearly as bad as being a loud obnoxious racist.

If you do see behaviour that you really feel is intentional rule breaking, report it through the proper channels rather than just being loud and obnoxious back, because it's not going to resolve anything and more than likely lead to you drawing negative admin attention to yourself. Posting what appears to be a veiled insinuation that GetSome accepts or promotes racism is not likely to get you the sort of outcome you desire.

Food for thought.
