Intellectual Discussion / Re: Is Donald Trump evil?

Trump is hilarious he continually shoots himself in the foot while a fair proportion of his country cringes.  Much schadenfreude derived.

I watched the execution of  a Korean man a few years ago by Muslim extremists.  May have mentioned on forums dunno...They slowly hacked off his head with a machete while he knelt and screamed.  I didn't sleep well for a while, and it set the bar for humanity's vileness for me.

Found it, 2006...fark getting old.

Not gonna link.

Korean women look great, being in a relationship with one?  Terrible....Sick of Psy...everywhere on tv, billboards, random street adds, and all shops play nothing but pop (esp his) all day long.  Excellent work that he managed to succeed in Korea where the pop scene is generally dominated by vomitiferous boy and girl bands though.

This was something I read about ages ago at university which helped change my views on cats.  I still love pet cats, but ferals must die.  Same as rats, dogs, and stoats which we used to stomp as kids, and possums which got spotlighted and bashed in the head...ugh many more..Some exaggeration in this story below...But BAD TIBBLES BAD!

A lighthouse keeper's cat, "Tibbles", is known for killing all Stephens Island Wrens and causing the extinction of the species in 1894.  While the species was killed off by the lighthouse personnel's cats, which had gone feral, this happened not in 1894, and the island was only the last refuge of the bird, which had become extinct on the mainland many centuries earlier due to Polynesian rat predation

General Chat / "but i'm a doctor"
« on: January 24, 2013, 06:32:25 pm »
Doctors are very much hit and miss worldwide.  NZ is no exception, some are great most are average, some are stupid.  Once you have gained the punitive entrance to medical school it is difficult to fail.  Two members of my immediate family are doctors, I would not trust them to apply a bandaid.  As an example of randomness:

I got bitten by a viper while pointing at it, going fuck man, that's a viper! (smart)  After a quick coffee arm was turning pretty black so we went to hospital. (also smart)  The doctors there swarmed around me and told me that a snake bite needed to go through general admissions and was not an emergency...A few of the student doctors (university hospital) appeared to panic when they saw me.  I got in a taxi, went to another hospital and lucked out a doctor there was also a herpetologist.  He gleefully treated my bite after a near instant correct diagnosis, took photos as the snake was extremely rare, and called his students in to have a look.  The guy was amazing.  He even lent me some of his scissors so I could cut dead flesh off the area as it necrotised.

People are not infallible, and they cannot remember everything (usually).  I see a lot of doctors consulting thick texts during diagnosis, but the tendency seems to be a quick, lazy, and often incorrect decision.

I am more than guilty of schadenfreude in this circumstance.  Between this clown and the Wyatt idiot d3 makes me want to kill it with fire.  Maybe they will hire fuk that loser Brevik to make the expansion(impossible).

Agree with what people have been saying re mental health...needs stringent screening.  Piers had another eruption (hah!) on CNN.  Proeveryonehazzagun guy was talking crap.  Piers, kaboom.....gun lobbyist guy went quiet for a while, spoke up again, Kaboom.   Lobbyist then admitted he was on medication for his mental health, this medication also suppressed his empathy, he thanked Piers for pointing out to him why the situation in the US was wrong.

Nice work with mental health checks of gun owning lobbyist  on TV there ;p.  Also agree about impracticality of regular stringent screening of existing gun owners.  Report to the police station for psych evaluation on a yearly..2 yearly basis?  Undergo similar process as when first acquiring firearms license?  As a  NZ gun owner I would not object to either of these conditions.  I view firearms as a privilege, not a right guaranteed by an outdated constitution in a country like the US.

The Piers Morgan rant on CNN was great, watched that on tv.

That Chinese example has been used in the media as an example of why stricter gun control laws are needed.  Strange to see it being used to the contra here, I agree that the poster seems to have missed th point entirely.

I was watching a Texan government official congressman, governor or something on CNN.  His comment was if the teacher had a gun she could have shot the killer.  I was like wtf you progun lobbyist idiot.  Always comes back to this same bullshit cycle.  Mourn, anger, finger point, advance political agenda, nothing happens.

As a parent watching the grieving, seeing the names, and listening to the epitaphs cuts me up.  At the same time I have already discussed this at length with my children and students, listening, retelling and answering questions they may have(not so much my youngest).

I like the stat, which like all stats can be misleading from Australia.  After stricter gun control laws were introduced in Aus after the Port Arthur massacre, the gun related death rate has fallen by a consistent 96%.  Specifically targeting pistols I think...someone else can check that one out for certainty.

I have started playing sfc3, like it more than the reiterated version of sword of the stars released on steam....what a pile of crap that game remains.   Funny tutorials in sfc3, Jean Luc says do this do this do this, then all help and objectives vanish...no log no nothing you are like erm what do I do again?  Game seems to consist of_>power to front shield, power up tractor beam, head on collision with target 1, nuke their shields and transport my peons across, release and repeat, while rotating and reinforcing crap that is shooting you in the ass.

I really hope star citizen delivers ;p

General Chat / Proper XCOM Sequel/Reboot in Works
« on: October 24, 2012, 08:27:48 pm »
Copy/paste from wiki:

Enemy Unknown was developed independently of 2K Marin's XCOM and the two games are set in entirely different universes, but the developers of both games have been in contact with one another.[1][2] It is also the first title developed by Firaxis Games not to feature Sid Meier's name, who served as the director of creative development but was not directly involved in its development day to day.[11][30] They also made an internal board game to help get the "feel" of the game right

The reference notes after Meier's name are interviews about the future of strategic gaming.  All the dev stuff I perused was by this guy:http://www.giantbomb.com/jake-solomon/72-102138/
When I first saw him he looked a bit young to me..I am an old nasty man like many others on forums.  Not sure on his age and at work, but I suspect he was in diapers when xcom was released.  The sceptic in me says he comes from the dumb it down, haste, haste, my way's better generation rather than ponderers around Sid's age.  I blame good consoles and decent console games on dumbing down pc games in general and influencing younger generations to dislike complexity.  Sounds like an ageist thesis waiting for study.

I didn't know there was a board game ;>...I like board games!  Man, Battletech with its hex maps still one of my favourites.

My baby is learning Russian as well as 2 other languages.  My wife is Russian, I live in Asia, and speak english so...  This is one of the cartoons that seems to hypnotise him.  Small and large kids in general seem to like them regardless of language...I am a bit soft and like them too....Anyway here is a link.

What do you guys think about this game after playing it for a while now.  The last xcom I played was apocalypse...still have it on my computer and loved it.  This one seems a bit linear and simplistic to me in what you can do.  Interceptors bleh, equipment bleh, missions bleh.  In its defense I really like the graphics for the solders armor design.  Some of the aliens look fantastic..others notably the thin men look terrible.  The cutscenes are crap.  The graphics in them seem to lack any kind of definition in comparison to other game facets.  The faces and uniforms are terrible...I hope they get modded.  They use the same graphical crap for all the alien autopsies and interrogations...bleh.

I really enjoyed things like machine gun spray and pray with 20 something shots...no chance now.  Grenade spammer solider? nope.  Change to another kind of soldier?  nope.
I dont like the canned encounters either.  Namely, where you are walking along and due to it being a trigger point X amount of aliens suddenly spawn next to you and you die.

Mission variety?  again nothing like its predecessors.  In the past there were frequent base invasions, killing cults, raiding company hqs, UFOs to be swarmed by your inferior vehicles and ganked or retreated from while another swarm of jetbikes takes up the fight....the fights actually took some time.  The same UFOs to be stormed once they crash on the ground.  Lots of alien information seeking missions.

As a game I like it, but as a reiterated xcom I think it fails.  Again it seems to me that an idiot arrogant dev is mainly responsible for this, Jake something.  I watched one of his interviews and grimaced as I realised how much this twerp had imposed his vision on the franchise.  Not as bad a fark up as Jay Wilson and diablo tycoon 3, but still a simplistic step backwards.

Xenonauts looks more like what I am after, but I don't like how they removed psionic soldiers from it.
