It always struck me as strange that Treasury, the Reserve Bank, the State Services Comission, Parliament, the Beehive, Bowen House and Archives all overlay a single major faultline (in fact, pretty much the entire machinery of Government is at-risk if that fault 'goes').
I hope their back-up systems aren't designed by Talent2.

I was thinking it'd be a good idea to pick one up for the interim. Even though I really want to move to a full frame sensor, at this point in time I only really have a grand to spend on frivolous pursuits like Photography. I currently rock an 18-55mm kit lens, an awful 70-300mm [terrible lens; I got it cheap] and a nifty fifty (awsome but not wide enough on the 1.6). I also considered a 24-105 and a 17-40 (good glass that will last me into the full-frame watershed. The 15-85 offers some balance between quality and budget as well as usability - should be able to sell it for 500 later on if need be?

Has anyone used this lens? It's got pretty favourable reviews as a 'walk-around' in terms of focal length and image quality. It seems to come with all the flash bits sans red ring.
Worth the price?

Yes the image is upside down, if you look closely there's a red roof which either from the disturbed water or the angle doesn't reflect. The van isn't shopped in (Unfortunately for the owner). Following the rain, lots of the roads around Canterbury are quite flooded, this picture was taken close to Lake Ellesmere. I nearly got stuck because my little Mazda 323 isn't exactly 4WD. Here's a picture, taken today, of the Hotel Ground Chancellor: And here is a trailer suspended by a crane:

Lemurs are second only to Tamarins in my order of favourite primates. I wish we could be as awesome as them both.

I once got electrocuted with 230v and it literally killed me (but I lived to tell the tale). Since then, I've made it a rule to minimise the chances of getting an electric shock - principally this means working on electricky things with the power disconnected.
To mitigate the static issue, I do absolutely nothing and that strategy has worked every time!

More in reference to the general disposition of the average Australian towards non-white folk. Pretty much. Australians' anti-immigrant stance seems only as extensive as their racism and xenophobia. Just like here, the same people who detest the Asian/African/PI immigrants generally haven't a peep to say about the (numerically more significant) British ones. Of course, I wouldn't say all the whiteys* are racist there though. In Australia however, every ethnic group seems to be pretty intolerant of every one else. I guess it just comes down to whose group is biggest/loudest. At the same time, they still manage to co-operate enough to run a country. Perhaps its more of a superficial friction that serves to maintain communities' own sense of self. * How do you define Australians of an earlier European / colonial heritage with a demarcation between them and more recently arrived Europeans? For the NZ equivalent people use the term 'pakeha' (although that's not quite correct either). I hesitate to call them 'Australians', because it almost seems to then exclude or undermine the other ethnicities who hold aussie citizenship. 'whiteys' is my un-pc placeholder [I've heard the term 'true-blues' being used in the same way].

I reckon.
We can move to Australia, spend years working there paying taxes, and still can't get welfare. As an Australian citizen myself, I do wonder why kiwis that live there permanently don't make the jump? That said, my citizenship was attained through familial connections rather than as an immigrant - I'm not too sure how hard it is to get that category of citizenship, but I'm guessing it is as easy for kiwis as anyone else. I doubt the many residents, on the SCV, who complain about not having access to welfare have even bothered to fill out the forms. If the security of welfare is that important to them, and they've spent years there, why not? When you have "National Sorry Day". Well National Sorry Day kind of arises because the immigration policy, set by the immigrants, was a bit too generous.

Buddhism?
http://edition.cnn.com/2013/04/22/world/asia/buddhism-violenceTerrible acts are committed in the name of pretty much any religion with varying frequency. This isn't to say that religion in itself causes people to do these things, I suspect the reason are a combination of something more primordial and extenuating circumstances like scare resources.
