General Chat / Re: GabeN telling us how it is..

I'm starting to have a real problem with Valve: their lack of structure, and this is a prime example. Their lack of management and everyone doing what they want was great when it was a small company, it allows people to be dynamic and put their energy into stuff that they enjoy, but now that it's a larger company (around 350 staff) I don't think it works any more. Look at how shit their support is (who'd want to deal with a bunch of whiny gamers if you didn't have to?) and how much they've pretty much left TF2 to stagnate.

I'm starting to have a real problem with you: your lack of correctness, and this is a prime example. Your lack of thought and just typing what you want was great when you were a small timer, it allowed opinions to be dynamic and focus their energy on stuff that was enjoyable, but now that you're a server admin (around 20 players) I don't think it works anymore. Look at how shit your argument is (who'd want to read such drivel if they didn't have to?) and how much you've kepted on with TF2 into stagnation.

You don't specify where I'm incorrect and just insult the game I still enjoy... OK then.

Read the Valve new employee handbook: https://www.valvesoftware.com/company/Valve_Handbook_LowRes.pdf
and then how it's actually a bit cliquey and according to a former employee (which granted wouldn't be unbiased) is difficult to get anything done: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2013-07/09/valve-management-jeri-ellsworth

I was with them for a number of years, they're awesome. I've only switched to Orcon in the past 6 months because I get a faster sync rate on their LLU gear at the local exchange (no fibre until 2018-2019).

Yer I'm hooked on this game, I think I just hit 30 hours on it. I'm onto my third city, best I've done is around 90,000 inhabitants who then started getting sick and dying. It turned out that the pollution from the waste outlet had managed to reach my water pumps and was making people sick, I didn't know about the hovering over the "sick" icon to see the reason until a couple of days ago.

I played the shit out of all the SimCities (except for the latest one which I didn't buy), I love the genre.

4 episodes in and I'm loving The Last Man on Earth, good news is it's looking like it'll be renewed for another season.

The new Crossing is looking pretty cool - https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=959791974045879

My wife worked there (at the Robert Harris) up until the earthquakes. We're looking at doing a trip up to Chch for the first time since leaving 18 months ago, should be interesting to see how much has changed.

I had no idea, I usually buy from Computer Lounge and Ascent but will sometimes buy from Playtech (probably around $500-1000 a year) - but no longer. I noticed they had some dodgy business practices a couple of months ago when they had their sales on in-stock products and when the sale starts the good stuff suddenly goes out of stock.

I finished GTA V on the PS3, to be honest I think it's overhyped. I'm hopefully not spoiling anything by revealing that you play as 3 different characters (most reviews have said this), to be honest I only enjoyed playing as one of those characters.

I had no idea they were remaking.. I played the shit out of that as a kid (and PQ and SQ and pretty much anything Sierra made) so that can go on my list of shit to watch

Same, Sierra games were pretty much the only ones I played for the first few years, mainly because they were the best games that would run on my crappy XT. SQ would probably be my favourite.

The two I'm most looking forward to in 2015 would have to be Rise of the Tomb Raider and King's Quest. I have a total nostalgia boner for KQ, I played it a lot when I was a kid and it looks like they'll be doing justice to the original:

Soldier of Fortune 2 multiplayer, I played the shit out of that game. My signature move was to hold onto a grenade to bleed the time and then run up to people and throw it in their face, I only blew myself up around 25% of the time.

General Chat / Re: Why Vaccinations work
« on: November 13, 2014, 10:29:28 pm »
It annoys the shit out of me when people blab on about small sample sizes of reports as if they're the only one who's sat stat100. I'm pretty sure a surgeon and medical researcher knows a sample size of 12 isn't sufficient to draw a conclusion, which is probably why he didn't. In fact it's probably why he suggested further research needed to be done. Probably because his sample size was too small.

It amuses me that you completely ignored my second point and decided to attack me instead for bringing up a relevant point about inadequacies in his method.

Blame are fuckwits like Jenny McCarthy. Don't persecute the 'doctor', he was merely reporting on observation, following the scientific method as best he could.

From what I gather he is now actively trying to find evidence to prove his initial observations since his reputation has already been destroyed. This might be fanning the flames a bit, but at the end of the day if he does find a causative effect between the MMR shot and a disease then good on him. But until then I would suggest that the MMR shot is perfectly safe and every child be vaccinated.

Not really, he used pretty poor testing methods and there was no follow up research. For example his sample size was 12, way too small to get any meaningful results. There's also evidence that he had a big conflict of interest, he was receiving money from trial lawyers suing the drug companies while he was doing the research (http://briandeer.com/mmr/lancet-deer-1.htm).

General Chat / Re: Why Vaccinations work

This shit makes me angry. When we were having our first child in Chch a few years ago we did antenatal classes through the Christchurch Parents Centre (recommended to us by our GP) and we had the president of the centre sit in on the class each week. When the topic of vaccination came up she started pushing her no-vaccination agenda saying that she didn't vaccinate her kids and they were fine, that child care centres can't refuse to admit your child because they're vaccinated and various other crap. It made me pretty angry to say the least so I sent around a document to everyone that night outlining the potential side effects of a vaccine as well as the effects of the disease if you don't vaccinate (I can't find the link but it was by Auckland University).
